Descendants of Bertram Lionel Pask

I was recently in contact with Sarah Newell, via Genes Reunited, regarding her grandmother's sister Jennie Pask née Geggie. Jennie married Frederick Henry Pask, a son of Bertram Lionel & Elizabeth Pask née Johnson.

This has prompted me to start include some of the significant information provided by Andy Pask. All the certificates have been transcribed, but I am awaiting some clarification as some of the images due to size were difficult to transcribe.

In the meantime, in the next website update there will be some additional information on Bertram Lionel's family.

Descendants of George Albert & Kate Pask née Avery

In June last year, Alison Pask formerly Bynorth contacted us, and it was established that she was Stuart's first cousin, twice removed. Her great-grandfather was Stuart's uncle George Albert Pask.

Alison contacted us again last Wednesday and since then we have been updating the information on this family. As the majority of information is relating to living people, only the names are shown.

This branch of the family can however been seen in the descendancy chart for John & Alice Pask née Woodcock who lived in Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire in the 18th century.

This information will be included in the next website update.

Albert Ernest & Marjorie Joan Pask née Griggs

Last week in Genes Reunited we linked to Bill Griggs from Adelaide Australia. He advised that his 4th cousin, once removed was Marjorie Joan Griggs who was married to Albert Ernest Pask. We have been able to confirm that they married in 1949 in the Bromley registration district. Albert was the son of Arthur Claude & Susan Pask née Murfitt.

Arthur Claude Pask was a Private in the 2nd Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. He died in World War 1 of wounds, and was buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium.

This information, together with an update on this family, will be available in the next website update.

Emily Pask's Bible

In September Lucy Meyer-Hubner wrote and advised that a Pask family bible was listed on Kevin Roy Shucksmith's website. I contacted Kevin and he advised that it had been used as a leaf press by someone and has a few leaves still left in it. The cover is worn but still holding and the first and last few pages are foxed.

The bible belonged to Emily Pask, who was born in 1863 in Fulbeck, Lincolnshire. She was the daughter of George & Betsy Pask née Woolhouse. John Pask of Aldershot (Emily's great-great nephew) has been researching the Pask-Woolhouse family for over 25 years.

John advised us a few weeks ago that he has now received the bible (new testament).

Maternal Narratives Update

After a lot of nagging, I resorted to bribery and corruption, and finally got Stuart to update his maternal narratives. He last updated the website with these narratives on 16 December 2005. They then included 693 people.

The maternal narratives are kept in a separate database that Stuart solely maintains. For additional information see the introductory notes on My Ancestors and Direct Relations.

A full list of these recent changes to the maternal narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section, and now includes 835 people.

Monmouthshire Pasks - Holcomb Connection

Yesterday, through Genes Reunited, I connected with Ronald Elsey who was researching Charlotte Pask born c1829 in Monmouthshire. I advised him that although there was very little information on Charlotte, that she may be the person he was looking for.

All I knew was that in the 1841 census she was listed as aged 10, in the household of Margaret Powell [possibly her grandmother], at Kilgwrrwg, Monmouthshire.

Ron responded and provided some information on Charlotte. Ron wrote:

Charlotte Pask c.1829-1902 Newchurch, Monmouthshire married John Holcomb 1822-1887 Charlwood, Surrey (son of Francis Holcomb 1778-1850 and Ann Mitchell b.1778). Their children were:
  • Louisa 1850 Newchurch, Monmouthshire
  • Mary 1852 Itton, Monmouthshire
  • John 1859
  • Henry 1863
  • Agnes 1867
  • Alice 1871
  • all of Llangybi (Llangibbi), Monmouthshire.
Based on this information, I searched in the GRO marriage Indexes for Charlotte's marriage. I found:
1848/Q2 Pask, Charlotte Chepstow 26 65
1848/Q2 Holecombe, John Chepstow 26 65
Interestingly, listed on the same page was Timothy Pask who married Mary Ann Rees. Pat Maybrey, who is also researching this family, advised that Timothy & Mary Ann married on 23 March 1848 in Kilgwrrwg, Monmouthshire. As their marriage is on the same page, Charlotte and John were probably married on the same day. It is fair to assume that Timothy and Charlotte are probably siblings. Based on this assumption, Charlotte is the daughter of James & Ann Pask née Morgan. Unfortunately without purchasing Charlotte's marriage certificate I cannot prove this.

I have found Charlotte and John listed in the 1851-1881 census. In the 1891 & 1901 census Charlotte is listed as a widow, living with her daughter Agnes. All the census detail verify the information kindly provided by Ron.

Pasks of Boothby Graffoe, Lincolnshire

A recent connection in GenesReunited, made me revisit a family that lived in Boothby Graffoe Lincolnshire for over 100 years. Although it has been only 1-2 years since we last researched this family, the wealth of information that is now available has provided much more detailed information on this family.

Richard Pask, who originated from Caythorpe, moved to Boothby Graffoe probably after his marriage to Mary Wright, who was born there. They had eight children:

  1. Millicent Pask b. 5 Aug 18211
  2. Stephen Pask b. 21 Apr 1823, d. 3 Nov 1861
  3. Joseph Pask b. 8 Jul 1826, d. 21 Nov 1833
  4. Samuel Pask b. 5 Dec 1830, d. 1908
  5. Richard Pask b. 15 Jun 1834
  6. Ann Pask b. 17 Apr 1836
  7. Thomas Wright Pask b. 1 Dec 1839
  8. William Pask b. 1842 d. 1925

The updated information will be available in the next website update.

Descendants of John & Susan Pask née Empingham

Fred L. Taylor wrote to us last week, as he very surprised to see his Aunt & Godmother Gladys May Pask listed incorrectly. Since then, together with Fred, we have corrected the information, and found that she was the great grand-daughter of John & Susan Pask née Empingham who lived in Timberland, Lincolnshire.

John was born in 1776 in Gautby, Lincolnshire. In the 1851 census, he was listed as a Chelsea Pensioner. He married Susan Empingham on 21 February 1822, at the comparatively late age of 46, and they had seven children:

  1. Richard Pask b. 17 Nov 1822, d. Apr 1900
  2. Joseph Pask b. 1824, d. 1901
  3. Hannah Pask b. 14 Dec 1826
  4. Margaretta Pask b. 18 Oct 1829
  5. Ann Pask b. 1831, d. Feb 1833
  6. Ruth Pask b. 1831
  7. Edward Pask b. 1834 d. 1919

Their youngest son Edward married Elizabeth Bradshaw, and they had seven children. Their youngest son was also Edward (1872-1923), who married Fanny Maria Ardron in Lincoln. Edward and Fanny were Gladys' parents.

Fred has provided valuable information on this family, as the children were mostly born between 1902 and 1911 - a difficult period to research. With his detailed information we have been able to group together Edward & Fanny's family:

  1. Doris Eliza Pask b. 2 Nov 1902, d. 19 May 1972
    Doris emigrated to Australia
  2. Gladys May Pask b. 12 May 1904, d. 7 Mar 1994
  3. Mable Pask b. 10 Mar 1906, d. 15 Nov 1988
  4. Edward Leslie Pask b. 11 May 1908, d. 24 May 1936
  5. Joseph Pask b. 1 Feb 1913, d. 28 Oct 1931
  6. Kathleen Pask b. 8 Dec 1914, d. 19 Nov 2004

Their youngest daughter Kathleen was Fred's mother.

This information has been included in the database, and will be updated in the next website update. Sincere thanks to Fred for sharing his research.

Marion Houghton Pask

Several months ago Sharen Gill wrote and sent me the very unusual birth certificate of her grandmother Marion Houghton Pask.

Marion was born on 13 September 1894 in Northorpe, Lincolnshire. Her birth was registered on 13 October 1894 and lists that she was the daughter of William Haigh & Mary Hannah Houghton née Pask.

However, all this information was corrected by a Statutory Declaration that was made on 19 November 1894 by Mary Hannah Pask and her father James Pask to Joseph Jackson Oates, the Register.

The events, as related by Sharen Gill née Whardle, were:

Mary Hannah Pask my great grandmother went to work as a maid in West Yorkshire and at that point we all thought it was Dewsbury she was working at, ie as that was where Marion was born, but as it transpires it was a villiage called Almondbury Huddersfield ... Mary Hannah Pask had not been in touch with her family in Prestwich for some time, a number of months, and the family became worried and sent her brother Noah to check on her, Noah found his sister Mary Hannah Pask living in a cottage in the grounds of the Houghton family home with a baby girl who was a few weeks old, this ofcourse being my grandmother. We know that Mary Hannah Pask returned home to Prestwich with Marion with the help of her brother Noah, hence now the story as we knew it unfolded, we were always lead to believe that William Haigh Houghton ( Marion's father) had intended to marry Mary Hannah Pask but his family had said if he did they would cut him off from the family and all inheritance, and at this point Mary Hannah Pask always said she would never allow that to happen, we were told that William Haigh Houghton was well to do maybe a Lord or son of a Lord. My grandmother was told she was paid for until she was 16 years old.I grew up knowing the story and listening to my Mother talk about how Polly ( Mary Hannah Pask's nickname) liked a drink in her later years and would talk about the Houghtons and who did his Lordship think he was sort of thing!

The certificate, together with the information that Sharen has extensively researched is included in the database, and will be updated in the next website update.

In my 20+ years of family history research I have never seen such a certificate. Sincere thanks to Sharen for sharing this fascinating information.

Website Update 27 November 2006

John and Isabella Pask née Gollan

The third marriage register image that Susan Keefe kindly provided was for:

John Pask and Isabell[a] Gollan, who married on 30 April 1840 in St. Pancras Parish Church.

I subsequently found them in the 1841 census living with the infant daughter Isabella, in Prospect Terrace, St. Pancras. They were enumerated under the name of Parsk, and incorrectly transcribed as Pank. This has now been corrected in Ancestry. Also listed in the 1841 census was probably Isabella's mother Sarah Gollan.

John at the time of his marriage to Isabella, was listed as a Widower. However I am unable to establish who he was married to previously. This family is well researched, with information previously provided by Greg Theophandies, and Colleen Morrison.

The database has been updated, and this information will be included in the next website update. Thanks to Susan for providing the marriage record.

William & Sarah Willis née Pask

The second marriage register image that Susan Keefe kindly provided was for:

William Willis and Sarah Pask, who married on 3 February 1845 in St. Pancras Church, St. Pancras.
Sarah gave her father as James Pask, a retired Publican. This contradicts the previous information found. In the census of 30 March 1851 in 20 Stanmore Street, St. Pancras (the same address given as her residence at the time of her marriage). William Willis was listed as the Head of Household; a Painter, living with his wife Sarah. Also listed was a visitor Martha Pask. This coincides with the 1841 census, when Sarah Pask was living at Queen Street, St. Pancras. She was listed as aged 25, in the household of Thomas PASK. Also listed was Martha Pask. Of course this is not conclusive, however hopefully additional information will be found to clarify this.

In this meantime, the database has been updated, and this information will be included in the next website update. Thanks to Susan for providing the marriage record.

Richard & Frances Amelia Pask née Meatyard

Last week I wrote to Caroline Meatyard, who is conducting a One-Name Study in the surname Meatyard. As detailed in the blog West Derby Registration District Marriages, Richard Pask and Frances Amelia Meatyard married on 18 August 1851.

Caroline provided comprehensive information on Frances Amelia Meatyard. Unfortunately Richard died at the young age of 22 years in 1855 in the West Derby registration district. Initially I could not find a remarriage, or death of Frances.

Over the weekend, when I attended the GOONS Computer Seminar, John Hanson in his presentation on The Family Historian mentioned the UKBMD Project, particularly for Lancashire BMDs. This project has transcribed the local register copies. I checked it out and found the marriage of Frances A. Pask to Samuel Abbott in 1859. Surprisingly enough the marriage in the GRO Index is indexed under the name Frances Amelia PARK.

I was then able to find them in the 1861 census living in Knight Street, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool.

Caroline advised that by the late 1860s Frances & Samuel Abbott had immigrated and were living in Victoria, Australia and had a daughter, Ellen Gertie Abbott born around 1874 in South Melbourne.

This information has been included in the database, and will be updated in the next website update.

GOONS - Computer Seminar

The Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) had a computer seminar in Hounslow yesterday on Organising Records on a Computer. I was invited to present on how I organise my records using The Master Genealogist (TMG).

I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, and learnt a lot. Jeanne Bunting was the organiser and she provided guidelines and recommended using a PowerPoint presentation instead of a demonstration. This worked exceptionally well. Although the initial presentation took longer and involved creating screenshots, it was definitely worth the effort. Thanks Jeanne for the tip. Also thanks to my dear friend Jan Cooper for helping me with the determining of the content.

The day was very interesting and included demonstrations on Custodian 3, and Family Historian. A memorable day.

Descendants of Thomas & Sarah Pask née Partington

I am still catching up on previous blogs, in particular one posted in August - Liverpool Marriage Transcripts. Today I have been researching the family of Thomas & Sarah Pask née Partington.

Thomas Pask was baptized on 4 May 1815 in Sedgebrook, Lincolnshire. He married Sarah Partington on 1 May 1845 in Liverpool, Lancashire. They are believed to have had five children:

  1. Ann Pask b. 1846, d. 18468
  2. Ann Jane Pask b. 18474
  3. Ellen Pask b. 1848, d. 1850
  4. Thomas Charles Pask b. 1851, d. 1921
  5. William Partington Pask b. 1853
Unfortunately Sarah died in 1853 in the West Derby registration district, possibly in child birth. Thomas then married Mary Seed in 1854 in the Fylde registration district. Thomas died in 1858 in the Liverpool registration district at the age of 42 years. However Mary continued to look after his children, as detailed in the 1861 & 1871 census.

Their son Thomas Charles married Isabella Graham in 1885 in the Hoylake registration district. Thomas was a Chemist and lived in Market Street, Little Meols, Cheshire together with Isabella and their daughter Annie.

This information will be included in the next website update.

William & Hannah Pask née Heath

Yesterday Susan Keefe sent me three marriage images she found at the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA). I have included the first of the marriages:

William Pask married Hannah Heath on 17 November 1839 in St. Dunstans, Stepney. William was a Cordwainer, a Widower of full age, residing at 3 Brook Street. His father was listed as John Pask, a Woolcomber?
I have extensively looked for William, John and Hannah in the 1841-1881 censuses, and GRO Indexes. I have not found anything conclusive. However, I did find a child called Mary Heath Pask, who was born in 1840, and unfortunately died in 1840. I think it is a good assumption that this is their child.

This family are now included in the database, and will be available in the next website update.
Many thanks to Susan in providing the marriage image.

Marriage Transcript for Oswald & Frances Poole née Pask

Today I included another marriage transcript, provided by Michael Debenham as part of the Newmarket Registration District Marriage Challenge.

The marriage was of Oswald Poole and Frances Pask on 31 October 1872 in St. Mary, Newmarket, Suffolk. Frances was the daughter of William & Catherine Elizabeth Pask née Smith.

This information, together with 1871-1901 census information relating to the couple, has been included in the database, and will be available in the next website update.

Marriage Transcript for William & Phoebe Cornell née Pask

Today I included the marriage transcript, provided by Michael Debenham as part of the Newmarket Registration District Marriage Challenge. Unfortunately when Michael provided this some time ago, I did not include the details in the database.

The marriage was of William Cornell and Phoebe Pask on 8 April 1871 in St. Andrews, Soham, Cambridgeshire.

Subsequently, I researched Phoebe, and found that she was born in 1850 in Ridgewell Essex, the daughter of William & Mary Pask née Winch. I also found William in the 1841, assumed to be living with his parents Robert & Ruth Pask.

I have researched this family in the 1841-1901 census, although it was not easy as their names were enumerated and indexed incorrectly several times. However I have added in www.ancestry.co.uk the corrections, so it should be easier to find them in future. This information will be included in the next website update.

Website Update 21 November 2006

The website was updated on Tuesday 21 November. This update is another significant update, and includes an additional 55 people in the narratives, as detailed in the previous blogs:

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. The narratives section now includes 6006 people. However, in the database there are now (including living people) 7,443 people - 3707 males, 3733 females, and 3 needing investigation!

Walter Frederick & Mary Ellen Pask née Stones

As detailed in the previous blog Worksop Pasks, several photographs were displayed in the Welchman Archive at the Bassetlaw Museum. I wrote to the museum and obtained permission to include the photographs in the website.

This photograph dated 1915, is assumed to be Mary Ellen Pask née Stones, the wife of Walter Frederick Pask, together with their children Ernest Pask, born 1910, and the infant could be either Harold Pask.

We identified that Walter & Mary had seven children:

  1. Ernest Pask b. 9 Feb 1910, d. 1979
  2. Harold Pask b. 1914, d. 1939
  3. George F. Pask
  4. Arnold Victor Pask b. 15 Nov 1918, d. Sep 1998
  5. Clifford Pask
  6. Iris A. Pask
  7. Rhoda C. Pask

It would be good to hear from any of their descendants to clarify this.

Descendants of George & Charlotte Pask née Middleton

Whilst researching information on Walter Frederick & Mary Ellen Pask née Stones, it was identified that there were several families living in the Worksop area at that time. They were all descendants of George & Charlotte Pask née Middleton.

George originated from Kexby, Lincolnshire, and Charlotte from Gainsborough. Between 1871-1881 they moved to Styrrup in Nottinghamshire (in the Worksop Registration District). Altogether they had ten children:

  1. Mary Ann Pask b. 26 Oct 1865, d. 1956
  2. Eliza Pask b. 1867
  3. Ann Pask b. 1870, d. 1887
  4. George William Pask b. 1873
  5. John Henry Pask b. 28 Dec 1873, d. 27 Feb 1972
  6. Ellen Ada Pask b. 1876
  7. Elizabeth Pask b. 1878
  8. Walter Frederick Pask b. 1881, d. 1950
  9. Florence Ethel Pask b. 1885
  10. Charlotte Pask b. 1888
On Sunday (November 20), we visited Styrrup and the nearby mining village of Harworth. There is no graveyard in Styrrup, with most of the villagers being buried in the churchyard of All Saints, Harworth or the municipal cemetery.

From the National Burial Index, we had identified two burials - Annie (aged 17 buried 14 August 1887), and Gertrude (aged 2 days buried 5 February 1896). Unfortunately we were unable to locate either graves. However, fortunately we found the grave of John Henry & Maria Jane Pask née Read. John died at the age 0f 98, and Maria Jane at the age of 92.

Information on their family, and their descendants will be available in the next website update.

West Derby Registration District Marriages

We have just received a marriage transcript, provided by Susan Atkins as part of the West Derby Registration District Marriage Challenge.

The Marriage Challenge is a Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) Project in which volunteers (Challengers) search for marriage entries in the deposited Parish Registers for a particular Registration District for the period 1837 to 1911. Susan has kindly provided the following marriage:

Richard Pask and Frances Amelia Meatyard - 18 August 1851

Susan previously provided three marriages from the Liverpool Registration District, as detailed in the blog Liverpool Marriage Transcripts. Thanks again to Susan for her efforts.

The full details, and copies of the transcript will be included in the website in the next update.

Thomas Oliver & Mary Jane Pask née Muldoon

In September, during our visit to Suffolk and Lincolnshire, we met with Barbara & David Goldsmith. Barbara's grandparents were Thomas Oliver and Mary Jane Pask née Muldoon.

Barbara has kindly provided an additional four generations including specific dates and places. These have been included in the database. As most of this information relates to living people, only their names will appear in the next website update.

As they are descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, yet again this extends John & Mirabel's family chart.

Michael Pask Willey

Andrew Willey has kindly provided the birth certificate of Michael Pask Willey. He was born on 13 August 1887 in Snitterby in Lincolnshire, the son of Charles & Sarah Ann Willey née Pask.

Many thanks to Andrew for sharing this information.

Worksop Pasks

Paula Payne wrote to us yesterday and provided a link to some Pask photographs. They are in the Welchman Archive at the Bassetlaw Museum. They have purchased and digitisatised 20,000 negatives taken by professional photographers Edgar Welchman and Son of Grove Street, Retford between 1910 and 1960. 8,000 of the photographs are searchable on the Welchman Archive page. Fortunately five photographs feature Pasks, and one Pasque.

The chemist shop at Worksop is probably 25 Bridge Street, Worksop and was the home of Thomas Edward Pask. Today the shop is Boots the Chemist. We hope to visit Worksop in a few weeks, and will photograph it.

The photograph dated 1915, of the mother and two children, is assumed to be Mary Ellen Pask née Stones, the wife of Walter Frederick Pask. They married in 1909. Their eldest son was Ernest Pask, born 1910, and the infant could be either Harold Pask born 1913-4, or George born 1914/Q4. They had four other children Arnold V., Clifford, Iris A., and Rhoda C.

We are still investigating the other photographs. Many thanks to Paula for finding, and letting us know about the photographs.

Descendants of Robert & Gertrude Alice Pask née Barnes

Maureen contacted us yesterday about her grandfather Robert Pask. In the 1901 census he was enumerated under the name of Pass, in Great Ringstead, Norfolk (RG13; Piece: 1881; Folio: 46; Page: 4). In the census, he was listed as aged 26 born in Frieston Lincolnshire, an Agricultural Labourer, living with his wife's family John & Jane M. Nobes. He was with his wife Gertrude A., and children Marie G., and Maud L.

Robert married Gertrude Alice Barnes and he died in Scarborough in 1946 at the age of 73. Gertrude moved back to Wisbech, and remarried in 1951 to Garner Wallis.

Maureen wrote that all his children's birth certificates state Pask. Maureen's mother was one of his 13 children.

So far, we have been able to identify 10 of the 13 children:

  1. Marie (Maria) G. 1900-
  2. Maud L 1900-1932
  3. Mary Alice 1902-
  4. Florence Evelyn 1907-
  5. Dorothy A. 1913-b1932
  6. Eileen I. 1915-
  7. Sylvia R. 1917-
  8. Gladys V.V. 1920-
  9. Leslie R. 1922-1984
  10. Renee
Maureen has provided us additional information, and we are in process of verifying and researching this family.

Descendants of Hezekiah & Sarah Pasque née Bentley

In September, Susan Keefe provided a lot of information on a Pasque family who lived in the London area. The earliest records are for Hezekiah & Sarah Pasque née Bentley. They had eight known children:

  1. Thomas Bentley Pasque b. 20 Sep 1794, d. 30 Jan 1795
  2. John Daniel Pasque b. 15 Jul 1798, d. 1850
  3. Amelia Ann Pasque b. 8 Jun 1800
  4. Mary Ann Pasque b. 2 Oct 1802
  5. Titus Pasque b. 3 Jul 1805, d. 1846
  6. Nathaniel Pasque b. 9 Nov 1809
  7. Joseph Everet Pasque b. 18 Aug 1813, d. 1873
  8. William Pasque b. 13 Jul 1815, d. 17 Apr 1816

Susan found this information in www.familysearch.org, and substantiated it with census records. I am currently including this information in the database and supplementing where possible with the GRO indexes and other information found. This will be available in the next website update. Many thanks to Susan for sharing her research.

Descendants of Thomas & Ann Scott née Pask

Another very long overdue update has been made relating to the descendants of Thomas & Ann Scott née Pask. Malcolm Scott wrote to us in August, and provided extensive information on Thomas & Ann's children:

  • Henry Scott Pask, who married Elizabeth Reek on 13th December 1852 at East Allington
  • William Scott, baptised 26th June 1834 at East Allington. He married Elizabeth Burton from Great Ponton
  • John Scott, baptised 18th March 1836 at East Allington who was buried 6 December 1837
  • John Scott, baptised 10th February 1838 at East Allington
  • Harriet Scott, baptised 28th March 1840 at East Allington who married William Stancer
  • Charlotte Scott, baptised 6th February 1842 at East Allington who married Charles Langley on 6th June 1870 at East Allington
  • Thomas Scott, baptised 17th August 1845 at East Allington who married Mary Cragg ln 14th May 1868 at East Allington
  • Richard Scott, baptised 18th April 1848 at East Allington who married Harriet Knight on 16th May 1867 at East Allington
  • George Scott, baptised 10th April 1850 at East Allington who married Harriet Kirkham from Radcliffe, Notts

Malcolm also provided burials for many of them. I have supplemented some of this information, and together with Malcolm 's information this will be available in the next website update. Many thanks to Malcolm and apologies for the delay in including this information.

Descendants of John & Emily Bentley née Pask

Whilst in Galway, I have been trying to catch up with some correspondence received in July & August! Tracy Bentley wrote to me in July and updated me on information she had on her great-great grandparents John & Emily Bentley née Pask.

Tracy has provided some additional information on Emily's son Frederick George who married Ada Maria Planner. Frederick & Ada immigrated to Canada. Tracy originally believed that Emily's son John Bentley married Eleanor Sibley, and also went to Canada. This has proved to be incorrect. The corrections have been made to the database.

In addition, Tracy provided information on Walter Bentley, Emily's youngest son, who married Jane Blake and they had four children - Rose, Florence Emily, Sydney George and Frederick William (Tracy's grandfather).

This information has been included into the database, and will be available in the next website update. Many thanks to Tracy and apologies for the delay in including this information.

One Day in History

This morning, I took part in the biggest blog in history.

The History Matters website reads:

'One Day in History' is a one off opportunity for you to join in a mass blog for the national record. We want as many people as possible to record a 'blog' diary which will be stored by the British Library as a historical record of our national life.

Write your diary here reflecting on how history itself impacted on your day - whether it just commuting through an historic environment, discussing family history or watching repeats on TV.

Website Update 16 October 2006

The website was updated today. This includes updates, as detailed in the previous blogs:

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. The narratives database now includes 5,892 people. Many thanks to all those who have contributed.

William Pask born c1860

Chris Bell, is trying to find the birth of her great-grandfather William Pask, who married Grace Isabella Solomon. William died on 31 May 1914 in The Johnson Hospital, Spalding, Lincolnshire at the age of 54.

Chris purchased the birth certificate of William Pask who was born in the Southwell Registration District, Nottingham. His parents were Henry & Matilda Pask née Edlin. Matilda is believed to have died in 1864 in the Southwell registration district. This needs further research as neither William, or his father Henry can be currently found in the subsequent censuses.

Many thanks to Chris for providing the birth certificate. It has provided several missing links that connect the family of Henry and Matilda.

Charles Henry & Emily Sarah Elizabeth Archer née Pask

In August, through Genes Reunited, I contacted Raymond Archer.

He provided the marriage certificate for Emily Sarah Elizabeth Pask and Charles Henry Archer who married in 1904 in Hackney. The marriage unfortunately did not work, and Raymond wrote that family legend says that Emily and a child emigrated to Australia.

Raymond continued to research for the unknown child. In September, he kindly provided a copy of the birth certificate of John Frederick Archer, who was born on 18 December 1905, and died in 1958 in Adelaide, Australia.

Bury St. Edmunds Marriages

A couple of weeks ago I received two marriage certificates, provided by Sandra Stevens as part of the Bury St. Edmunds Registration District Marriage Challenge. The Marriage Challenge is a Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) Project in which volunteers (Challengers) search for marriage entries in the deposited Parish Registers for a particular Registration District for the period 1837 to 1911. Sandra kindly provided two additional marriages from outside of this period:

Sandra has previously provided a considerable number of Pask marriage transcripts. Last December we received 48 from the Risbridge Registration District as an early Christmas present. This information will be included in the next website update.

Limited Access to E-Mails

I am going away on business to Galway Ireland for the next few weeks. Stuart is holding the fort back at home. From previous experience, I will have limited access to e-mails. So apologies in advance if it takes a little longer to reply. Nevertheless keep sending me updates, as I will have my laptop with me, and able to work on the information.

Update on William John & Harriet Pask née Rolfe

As detailed in the previous blog William John & Harriet Pask née Rolfe, Annette, the wife of George Charles Pask has provided a lot of information, particularly specific dates. This information covers families in Brentford, Windsor, Bracknell, and Toronto and Vancouver in Canada.

Hopefully later today, or latest tomorrow, the website will be updated. Thanks to Annette for sharing her valuable information.

Parsk and Parsque Marriages & Deaths

As a follow on from the previous post Pasque, Parsk & Parsque Births, I have now extracted all the births, marriages, and deaths from www.freebmd.org.uk. I have verified all the information against the original images. In the marriages, I have also researched, wherever possible, to establish the spouse.

The database now contains the following Parsk & Parsque entries:

Births (1837-1983)
Parsk 23
Parsque 6

Marriages (1837-1983)
Parsk 25
Parsque 2

Deaths (1837-1909)
Parsk 13
Parsque 4

Several of the marriages were Pask(e) marriages previously not found in the GRO indexes.

My next task is to update the Guild of One-Name Studies archive. Also to incorporate all the information that Valerie Francis has provided, including some additional information she provided in an e-mail today.

Pasque, Parsk & Parsque Births

In August, Valerie Francis wrote to us and provided quite a lot of information on the families with the names Pasque, Parsk, and Parsque. Valerie wrote again yesterday and provided more names. This prompted me to do some investigations of my own.

These variants seem to be focused in the Rochford and Wangford registration district in Essex, and Blything in Suffolk, obviously where probably the dialect accounts for the difference in spelling.

This morning I searched www.freebmd.org.uk and found 22 of 29 births that we have not yet listed in our GRO Births Index (these are searchable from the website in the data sources section). I am in the process of looking at the GRO images and verifying the information listed in FreeBMD. I will then update the GRO Births archive.

Valerie's information will be included in the next website update. Many thanks for her patience and perservance in finding these BMDs that are listed under these derivatives.

Thomas & Martha Pask of St. Pancras

As mentioned in the previous blog Ellen Pask née Levy or Villiers, during the past few days, together with John Morton Cross, we have been researching James Pask.

We knew, from the Family Register, that he was born on 22 November 1813. In the censuses he stated he was born in Bloomsbury, London. We searched the 1841 census, and found him living in Queen Street, St. Pancras, assumed to be living with his parents Thomas & Martha Pask. Also listed was Sarah Pask, assumed to be their daughter.

On searching the GRO marriage index and www.familysearch.org, I found that Sarah married a William Willis on 3 February 1845 in Old Church, St. Pancras, London. This was the same church as James and Ellen married at on 22 September 1841. I then searched for Sarah Willis in the 1851 census, and found them living in 20 Stanmore Street, St. Pancras. William was listed as a Painter, living with his wife Sarah. Also listed was a visitor [Mother-in-law] Martha Pask.

Martha was a widow, so therefore it is assumed that Thomas died between 1841 and 1851. Martha died in 1855 in the St. Pancras registration district. I did not locate Sarah & William Willis in the 1861 census, however in the 1871 census they were living in Moss Side, Lancashire. In the same town as James' daughter and son-in-law Adolphus Tesdorpf & Amy Lee Forrest née Pask.

Interestingly enough when I was including the 1851 census information in the database I noted that another family was listed literally only 20 pages before at 13 Aldenham Terrace, St. Pancras (HO107 Piece 1496 Folio 891 Page 48). Henry Pask was listed as aged 41 born in St. Pancras, the Head of Household a Master Painter employing 2 men, living with his wife Elizabeth and children Marie, Caroline, Louisa, and Henry.

I then searched for the Henry in the 1841 census, and found him living in Stanmore Street, St. Pancras (the street where Sarah & William Willis lived, together with Martha in 1851). Henry was listed as aged 30, the Head of Household; a Painter, assumed to be living with his wife Eliza [Elizabeth]. In the 1871 & 1881 censuses, Henry gives his place of birth as Bloomsbury in 1810 (the same place as James who was born in 1813). It is fair to assume that Henry and James are probably the sons of Thomas & Martha Pask. Although obviously further verification is required.

This information has been included in the database, and will be subsequently included in the next website update.

Ellen Pask née Levy or Villiers

During the past few days, together with John Morton Cross, I have been researching the ancestors of Amy Lee Forrest née Pask.

As detailed in the previous blog, Adolphus Tesdorpf & Amy Lee Forrest née Pask a Family Register details the descendants of James Pask and his wife Ellen Villiers, also known as Levy. For some time John has been trying to establish why Ellen changed her name from Levy.

When James and Ellen married on 22 September 1841 in Old Church, St. Pancras, her name was Levy. On their son Isaac's birth certificate it gives her name as Levy. However on the Family Register, and the remainder of their children's birth certificates it gives her name as Villiers.

We have gathered quite a bit more information about the family, but remain still mystified on why Ellen changed her name.

Website Update 3 October 2006

The website was updated today. This includes updates, as detailed in the previous blog:

Adolphus Tesdorpf & Amy Lee Forrest née Pask

In addition, there is a new family chart for James Pask, Amy Lee's father.

Many thanks to John Morton Cross for sharing the "Family Register", and the additional information he has researched.

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. The narratives database now includes 5,854 people. Many thanks to all those who have contributed.

William John & Harriet Pask née Rolfe

Annette, the wife of George Charles Pask contacted us yesterday. George is the grandson of William John & Harriet Pask née Rolfe.

Annette has provided several missing links that relates to:

  • Matilda Gertrude Rose Pask
  • Dorothy Maud Pask b1905 who married Stanley Pearson
  • William Ernest Pask 1907-1967 who married Lilian Beatrice Delahay, and their children Joyce, Maureen, Oliver, and George Charles
  • Walter Pask b1910

They are all descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, and yet again this extends John & Mirabel's family chart.

This information will be included in the database in the near future. Many thanks to Annette and George for providing these missing links.

Adolphus Tesdorpf & Amy Lee Forrest née Pask

Recently John Morton Cross contacted us about the family of Adolphus Tesdorpf & Amy Lee Forrest née Pask. John is their great-grandson.

John originally provided a transcription of a handwritten "Family Register" that details the descendants of James Pask and Ellen Levy, who were the parents of Amy Lee Pask. Yesterday, he kindly provided an image of this superb and unique document.

He writes:

The document is unsigned and could be in two differing hands, albeit similar. It is slightly ragged down its left hand side and could have been removed from some form of book. The form on which it was written was printed by J.F. Tallis London.
Over the next few days we will include the information in the database, and this will be included in the next website update.

Website Update 30 September 2006

The website was updated today. This includes updates, as detailed in the previous blog:

Descendants of Frederic & Maggie Ruth Smart née Pask
In addition, links have been included in the narratives of those featured in the Photograph Album of Melanie Carter.

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. The narratives database now includes 5,843 people. Many thanks to all those who have contributed.

Descendants of Frederic & Maggie Ruth Smart née Pask

Melanie Carter has provided an extensive update on the family and descendants of Frederic Smart, and his wife Maggie Ruth née Pask. Frederick & Maggie had four children - Peggy, Tom, Joe, and John.

Frederic worked for a Grain & Seed Merchant in Whittlesford, and the company still exists today. Melanie has recently been in touch with their grandson Andrew, and their great-grandson Douglas.

As they are descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, yet again this extends John & Mirabel's family chart.

Great Gonerby - Grimsby Pasks

We recently linked via www.genesreunited, with Katie Pask whose family live in Grimsby. After our initial contact it was realised that Katie's ancestors originated from Great Gonerby, and that Katie's father Martin and Stuart are fourth cousin, and fourth cousin once removed. You are probably wondering how he could be both. Martin's parents were Herbert Edward and Annie Mary and both Pasks, as they were first cousins once removed.

As we have recently completed the transcription of all births, marriages, and deaths we have been able to update their descendants as the original information was provided by Michael Wood several years ago, and only included their names.

By coincidence during our trip to Grimsby we visited Cleethorpes Cemetery in our search for Pasks mentioned in the National Burial Index. We visited Annie's unmarked grave. We also located the grave of Katie's great grandparents Edward & Mary Pask née Askew.

Website Update 24 September 2006

The website was updated today. This includes updates, as detailed in previous blogs:

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. The narratives database now includes 5,816 people. Many thanks to all those who have contributed.

Additional Certificates from Andy Pask

Andy Pask has yet again provided 18 more certificates relating to his Pask family. These certificates relate to:

The previous certificates have now been transcribed, and after checking, will be included into the database. Sincerest thanks to Andy for so generously sharing this information with us and other Pask researchers.

Pask Marriages from the London Metropolitan Archives

Susan Keefe kindly provided some marriages from the parish registers held at the London Metropolitan Archives.

They are the marriages of :

  • John Pask at St Leonards Shoreditch on 1 April 1849 to Mary Ann Edmonds/Edwards
  • Edward Bishop to Frances Wood on 15 Feb 1863 at the Parish Church, Spitalfields
  • John Pask to Mary Kennedy on 4? November 1867 at the Parish Church, Bethnal Green

Susan has also provided information on Joseph Pasque and his family. This, together with the details for the marriage of Edward Bishop will be included in a subsequent website update.

Many thanks to Susan for these certificates, and the information.

George Henry & Jane Levesley née Pask

Sally Baldwin contacted us last weekend, and provided the marriage of George Levesley (born c1847 Heckington) to Jane Pask (born c1847 Ewerby Thorpe). They married in 1867 in the Sleaford Registration District. Sally also advised that the family were living in Bicker in the 1871 and 1881 censuses, and then Rippingdale in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

I found them living in Bicker in the 1871 Census, together with their young daughters Harriet & Elizabeth. I searched the database and realised that Jane was the only daughter of Michael & Harriet Pask. I have currently not found the marriage of Michael & Harriet, as it is not listed in the GRO indexes.

Penny Scharning had recently contacted us about Michael & Harriet Pask, and provided information and photographs of their gravestone in Heckington churchyard. When Michael died in 1893, probate was granted to his son-in-law George Henry Levesley.

No Access to E-Mails 19-22 September

Unfortunately I have been away this week on business in Galway Ireland, and have had no access to my e-mails. I am flying home this afternoon, and will catch up on my e-mails over the weekend.

Walter John & Emily Margaret Pask née Smith

Michael Neal first contacted us in early 2005, regarding his great-grandparents Walter & Rosetta Pask née Rixon.

He has now provided us with additional information on his grandparents Walter John & Emily Margaret Pask née Smith, and their children.

Michael has also provided their marriage certificate, and a photograph of Walter John.

This information will be included in the next website update.

Blake - Savage - Pask Cousins

On Monday September 4, we visited the National Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby. We met with Lucy, one of the archivist. We had written to Lucy three weeks' ago about documents that were deposited by Albert Blake (Stuart's cousin) in the Welhome Galleries in Grimsby in the early 1980s. These documents included a wallet containing the militia papers of William Savage (Stuart's grandfather). The papers date from 1876 to his discharge in 1888, when he lost his left leg in an accident when loading the ship, the Brig "Anna" lying in Grimsby dock on 1 September 1888. Other documents included his and his wife Frances' hawker licenses.

Unfortunately Lucy had to report that as the Welhome Galleries had now closed and that currently they could not locate the documents. However, Lucy did advise us that almost simultaneously another person had requested the same documents! Stuart's mother's sister Frances "Annie" Blake née Savage youngest son, Harry Blake, who still lives in Grimsby had recently written to the museum to obtain the documents.

Stuart had attempted several times to contact the descendants of his maternal aunt Annie. Lucy kindly provided the address and telephone of Harry & Rosemary Blake née Dennis. We immediately telephoned them, and arranged to meet the following day.

You can imagine our surprise, but sheer delight to meet them. Also Stuart's cousin Rose Little née Blake also called to see us. Rose is a very sprightly 92 year old who is nimble, quick thinking, and still drives a car. Rose remembers, amongst a wealth of other information, pushing Stuart around in a pram when he was a baby.

Harry & Rosemary kindly provided numerous photographs and documents which we were able to scan and return the following day. This included a wedding photograph which showed left to right, John Albert Blake & Frances Ann Blake née Savage [groom's parents], unknown bridesmaid, Harry Blake & Rosemary Blake née Dennis, Frances Blake [groom's sister], and Mr & Mrs Dennis [bride's parents].

As if that was not enough, we were then invited to Harry & Rosemary's 50th wedding anniversary on Friday September 8. Of course we changed our previous plans, and returned to Grimsby on Friday night to join with them and 80+ family and friends to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.

More information, and photographs is anticipated in the near future from the many cousins, and second cousins met at the party.

Suffolk Pask Get-Together September 2, 2006

We were very fortunate to stay with Jo Pask of Hartest on Friday to Sunday, September 1-3. She hosted an excellent BBQ on Saturday night and nearly 20 of her relatives attended. As mentioned in the previous blog, we updated the chart, which now contains 976 descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, and consists of 12 generations. Fortunately Jo's hallway was just long enough to display the chart, which is nearly 30 feet long.

Stansfield, Suffolk

On Saturday September 2, during our visit to Suffolk we visited Stansfield. In the 1881 & 1891 census, the grocers and drapers shop was the home of Thomas & Hephzibah Maria Pask née Tyte.

This photograph was supplied by Melanie Carter and shows them standing in front of the shop.

Regretfully we could not locate the shop. Whilst we visited the church, we did not find any Pask graves.

The family moved to Felixstowe between 1891 and 1901.

Thursday, September 07, 2006

Chevington, Suffolk

The next place we visited was Chevington. On our arrival at the churchyard we were met by the resident meeter and greeter - a cat. She accompanied us on our tour and helped us find the grave of Herbert George Pask, and his wife Matilda Margaret Pask née Argent. They are buried with their son Peter Pask.

Visit to Wickhambrook, Suffolk

This week we have been in Suffolk and Lincolnshire. Primarily to enjoy the countryside, relax, and meet old and new friends and familiarise ourselves with the countryside where Pasks have lived for several generations.

Last Friday we visited Wickhambrook, the home of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. This is a very picturesque village complete with the alms houses, and thatched cottages.

Unfortunately we did not locate any Pask graves.

Descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow Chart

The new chart of the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow has now been printed, and will arrive in the post on Friday morning, in time for our trip to Suffolk.

There is a significant difference to the previous chart printed last year. Here are some statistics, it:

Contains 976 people
Consists of 12 generations
Measures 352 inches (nearly 30 feet long) x 24inches wide
Is almost the length of a double-decker bus

Does anyone have a wall big enough for this?

This chart only refers to Suffolk Pasks, and that particular line. It makes you wonder how long it would be if we could link all the Pasks together!

Website Update 29 August 2006

The website was updated today. The focus this update was to prepare the chart for our trip to Suffolk, as detailed in the previous blog Descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. The chart has now been sent to the printers.

Additionally, I have included thumbnails of the photographs kindly provided by Melanie Carter. I will include the full photographs in a family album in the near future.

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. The narratives on the website now includes 5,816 people. Many thanks to all those who have contributed.

Descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow

Last year in early September we went to Bury St. Edmunds and met fellow researchers Dorothy Pask, Jo Pask, and Ray Alderton. We took with us a 19 foot family chart showing the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow.

We then went onto Hartest and met with the descendants of Ernest & Joan Pask née Kerry, including Chris Pask (visiting from New Zealand), David, Tessa, and Judith.

Next weekend, September 1-3, we have arranged to visit Jo again, and stay for a few days. As we are likely to meet up with several other Pasks, we thought it would be an ideal opportunity to update the chart. There has been considerable progress and the chart now contains an estimated 700 people.

During the weekend, together with a lot of help from Melanie Carter, who is the great-great-grand-daughter of Thomas & Hephzibah Maria Pask née Tyte, we have been putting the final touches to the chart. As mentioned in the blog Descendants of Edgar Richard & Lottie Elizabeth Pask née Taylor Update, Melanie has a wonderful collection of very early photographs. Although sadly there will not be space on the chart to include these superb photographs, they will be available on the website in the near future.

Tomorrow is the deadline for sending the chart to the printers (Genealogy Printers). Afterwards I will update the website.

Additional Birth, Marriage & Death Certificates

Yesterday, Andy Pask provided some more certificates. These are relating to the names of:

DAWSON, FISHER, HARDEN, JACOBS, LAWSON, LINSELL, LOVEDAY, LYNN, LUCKING, MAKINGS, McKAY, MERCER, PALMER, PARKER, PHILLIPS, RIXON, SHORT, SIMMONDS, WEED
During the next month these certificates will be included in the database. Sincerest thanks to Andy for taking the time to scan these certificates and make them available to the Pask, Paske One-Name Study, and our fellow researchers. Many of these certificates hold the key to linking families together. His generosity is superb.

Descendants of Edgar Richard & Lottie Elizabeth Pask née Taylor Update

As detailed in the previous blog Descendants of Edgar Richard & Lottie Elizabeth Pask née Taylor, Melanie Carter has been helping us update the information. She has kindly provided us with an excellent photograph of the Pask family taken at Christmas in approximately 1910.

Thomas & Hannah Pask née Parish Immigrated to America

Another relevation just discovered was that Thomas & Hannah Pask née Parish immigrated to America!

Andy included in his documents the image of the US census for 1880:

Census Place: Newark, Essex, New Jersey; Roll: T9_777; Family History Film:
1254777; Page: 462.1000; Enumeration District: 43; Image: 0299.
Thomas was listed as a Shoefitter, living with his wife Hannah, and daughter Ellen.

It is likely that their son Thomas Henry Pask also immigrated in 1893. He sailed on the Scythia, arriving at the port of Boston, Massachusetts. His occupation was a Bootmaker, and his last residence was listed as Northamptonshire.

This seems to confirmed by the fact that we could not find either Thomas, or Thomas Henry and their families in the subsequent UK censuses.

Donald & Florence Hannah Lucking née Pask

Donald Lucking contacted me today, about his grandmother Florence Hannah Pask. Donald wrote:

Florence married David William Lucking in 1900. Unfortunately David died in the Star & Garter Home, Richmond in 1916 after injuries sustained at Gallipoli. My grandmother Florence Lucking née Pask married again to her lodger a Mr Leslie Morgan from Tenby in Wales, who was a tallyman at the docks.

Amazingly enough, only this morning I received from Andy Pask, the marriage certificate of Florence's parents John Pask and Charlotte Peach. John Pask was the son of Thomas & Hannah Parish née Pask.

With the greatest of pleasure, I was able to point Donald to the photograph and information in today's previous blog relating to the Descendants of Thomas & Hannah Pask née Parish. I am very pleased to say that Andy and Donald have contacted each other to exchange their information on their shared ancestor.

Later in the day, Donald in return provided a lovely photograph of David William & Florence Hannah Lucking née Pask, with their infant son William.

Eunice Grace Pask

Yesterday I exchanged several e-mails with Julian Bennet. He has provided some information, including this photograph, relating to his grandmother Eunice Grace Pask.

Julian writes:

Eunice Grace Pask (1896-1973) was born in Willesden, NW 10, and died in Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane Queensland. Eunice married John Charles Page Bennet in 1917 at St Matthew's, St Mary's Road, Harlesden, NW10.
Julian also advised that all of the information he has is from his Uncle who lives in Brisbane, Australia, who has been working on the tree for the last 50 years or so and has a wealth of information concerning primarily the Bennets but also Pask, Archer, Ince, Dawson, Goozee and Page surnames. Julian has provided a GEDCOM, and in the foreseeable future I will include this information in the database. Many thanks for Julian for providing this information.

Descendants of Thomas & Hannah Pask née Parish

Yesterday I received an overwhelming 122 images from Andy Pask. These included birth, marriage, and deaths certificates, baptisms records, parish register entries, censuses and photographs relating to the descendants of Thomas & Hannah Pask née Parish.

I feel like it was all my birthdays, and Christmases rolled up into one. What a wonderful collection. This has added considerably to the Pask, Paske One-Name Study.

Amongst the collection is an early photograph of taken in Thomas in his 30s.

Over the next few months we will add this information to the database, and try wherever possible to supplement this all ready extensive collection. We are indebted to Andy for sharing this.

Bertram Lionel Pask (1880-1914)

As previously mentioned, in the blog Summary of Information Recently Received, Ian Black kindly provided us with a photograph of Bertram Lionel Pask who was killed in action on 16 September 1914, fighting in World War.

I have just been contacted by Andy Pask, via Genes Reunited, who is the great-grandson of Bertram. Andy has extensively researched his family, and has given me access to his family tree.

Bertram married Elizabeth JOHNSON in 1906 in the Northampton registration district. Previously I had only listed two of Bertram's five children, with Andy's help the other children have been identified:

  • Agnes, born 1906 in Northampton
  • Bertram, born 1907 in India (Andy's great grandfather)
  • Frederick Henry, born 1909 in India
  • Cynthia Grace, born in Devonport, Plymouth
  • Gordon Mons Aisne, born in 1914 in Northampton

In the near future, we will include all the descendants of Bertram Lionel. Many thanks to Andy for sharing this information.

Hawthorn Ridge Cemetery

Probably one of the most poignant cemeteries we visited in our trip to France during the weekend, was the Hawthorn Ridge Cemetery No 1 near Auchonvillers. This very small cemetery is literally in the middle of a field that was actually being ploughed by the farmer, and we accessed it by walking on a rough path through the field.

The cemetery contains the graves of 152 soldiers, including 71 unidentified.

William John Pask is buried in this small cemetery, in a double grave together with P.F. A. Davey.

We are currently unable to determine who William is, only that he was born in Tottenham.

Full details of this cemetery, and those who are buried there can be found on the Commonwealth War Grave Commission website.

Arras War Memorial

Another war memorial we visited yesterday was in the Boulevard du General de Gaulle in the western part of the city of Arras.

This memorial commemorates almost 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand who died in the Arras sector between the spring of 1916 and 7 August 1918, and have no known grave.

We photographed the names of:

  • Henry Frederick Pask, the son of Benjamin Denny & Sophia Pask née Brooker
  • Sidney Thomas Pask, the son of Oliver Edward & Elizabeth Pask née Downes. This was the second son they lost. We had visited his brother's memorial at Thiepval War Memorial earlier in the day.
  • Thomas Pask, born in Kexby Lincolnshire
  • George Asplin Paske, he was son of George & Jane Pask née Way, wife of Alice May Harrison.

Full details of those remembered at the memorial can be found on the Commonwealth War Grave Commission website.

Thiepval War Memorial

Yesterday we visited the Thiepval War Memorial in the Somme, France. In March when we visited several of the panels were blocked off for renovation. Also it was bitterly cold, raining and the visibility was poor. Fortunately yesterday was a beautiful sunny day.

We photographed the names of:

  • Frederick Pask
  • Harry Pask, the son of William & Grace Isabella Pask née Solomon
  • John Edward Pask, the son of Joseph & Mary Pask née Daft
  • Oliver Edward Pask, the son of Oliver Edward & Elizabeth Pask née Downes
  • Francis Albert Paskey

Whilst photographing the Lincolnshire Regiment section, we met some other people visiting from Lincolnshire. Coincidentally they lived in the Grantham area, and one of them had previously worked for Pask, the Market Gardener.

Full details of those remembered at the memorial can be found on the Commonwealth War Grave Commission website.

William & Maria Pask née Schmitz

Julie Wale wrote to us today. She is the grand-daughter of William Pask, who was the youngest child of Walter & Rosetta Pask née Rixon.

Julie writes that William was born on 4 July 1899 (he shared a birthday with Stuart). He married Maria Schmitz on 24 June 1923.

Maria (Marie) Schmitz was born on 10 March 1898 in Bonn, Germany. They met in Koln where Maria worked in a hotel as a chambermaid, and William was a British soldier.

They had two children William John, and Jean Marie (Julie's mother). They lived most of their lives at Blomville Road, Beacontree, Dagenham.

The full details will be included in the database in the near future. Many thanks for Julie for sharing this information.

Summary of Information Recently Received

During the past two weeks in the UK, we have seen the temperatures drop and an end to the drought. For the first time in six weeks we have mown the lawns. Subsequently family historians have returned to their research. We have seen a significant increase in e-mails. Not that we are complaining!

Just to reassure everyone that we are working on their information, however it will take quite a few weeks to catch up. So watch this space for more information received from:

  • Colin Pask, who is a descendant of Victor Frederick & Ellen Elizabeth Pask née Clements. who married in 1930/Q2 in the West Ham RD. Victor was born in 1903.
  • Derrick Watson, researching Arthur J. & Sophia M. A. Pask née Farr. They married in 1925/Q2 in Bethnal Green registration district.
  • Hilary McDermott, provided an update on George & Fanny Fortescue née Pask.
  • Ian Black, sent photographs of Bertram Lionel Pask, Lilian Gertrude Pask, Florence Emily Pask, and Lilian's son Norman Black.
  • Joseph Starbuck, provided a copy from the Ryhall register of the marriage of Mary Pask and Robert Downes.
  • Malcolm Scott, researching the descendants of his great great grandmother Ann Pask from East Allington, Lincolnshire. We currently have only two childen listed, however Malcolm has provided details of nine children.
  • Melanie Carter, as detailed in the separate blog Descendants of Edgar Richard & Lottie Elizabeth Pask née Taylor.
  • Pat Maybury, providing several Pasks baptisms and burials from St Martins Church, Caerphilly (1813-1924).
  • Penny Scharning, sent photographs of Michael & Harriett Pask graves at Heckington, Lincolnshire.
  • Susan Keefe, information on Bethnal Green Infirmary/Hospital.
  • Tracey Bentley, with an update on the descendants of John & Emily Bentley née Pask, who lived in Newington, London.
  • Valerie Frances, provided the birth registrations for all eleven children of James Pasque. This was no mean feat, when you consider that this included five variations of the name - Parsk - 2; Parsque - 1; Paske - 2; Pasque - 5, and PEARSQUE!!!!!

Sincere thanks to everyone. We are currently in France to photograph the Pask(e)s on the Thiepval and Arras memorials. However we hope to update the website on our return.

Descendants of Edgar Richard & Lottie Elizabeth Pask née Taylor

Melanie Carter contacted me last weekend, and kindly explained that some of the information we had detailed on her great-grandparents Edgar Richard & Lottie Elizabeth Pask née Taylor was incorrect. We are always indebted to people who take the time to provide us with any corrections.

Edgar Richard Pask was born in 1882 in Stansfield, Suffolk. He was the son of Thomas Pask and Hephzibah M. Tyte. Edgar married Lottie Elizabeth Taylor in 1901 in the Cambridge registration district. His wife, Lottie, died in 4 December 1950 in the Samford registration district. Edgar died on 17 June 1961 and his death was registered in the Ipswich registration district.

They had the following children:

  1. Edna Lottie Pask b. 1901, d. 1918
  2. Betty Ruth Pask b. 22 Jan 1908, d. 6 Sep 1995
  3. Joan Lillian Pask b. 5 Jul 1911, d. 29 Nov 2004
  4. Thomas Richard Pask b. 25 Sep 1916, d. 20 Oct 2003
  5. Muriel Margaret Pask b. 24 Dec 1920, d. 1924

Melanie has provided information on all of their descendants, including full names, and specific dates of birth, marriages, and deaths. Most of the information is "living", however the names will be included in the family chart of the Suffolk progenitor John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow.

This information will be included in the next website update. Sincere thanks to Melanie for taking the time to provide this information.

Lambert & Newman Pask

There is a Pask line in the Stamford area of Lincolnshire that descends from Edward & Sarah Pask, that has intrigued us for some considerable time. They were one of the first families we started with in the Pask, Paske One-Name Study. The christian names of Lambert and Newman have been passed down for several generations. Slowly but surely we are putting the pieces together, with the help of researchers scattered in England and Australia.

During the last two years we have seen a considerable increase in accessible records, including GRO indexes and indexed census records. Sometimes assumptions made 2-4 years ago prove incorrect. Together with collaboration with other researchers these assumptions can be rectified and often lead to brick walls being leapt. During the last few weeks, such a situation has occurred.

I recently received a marriage transcript for Lambert Pask who married Charlotte Walsher on 4 June 1854 in St. Johns, Waterloo, Lambeth, London. Originally it was thought that Charlotte's name was Walters. Additionally in the marriage transcript it gave Lambert's father as Lambert Pask, not as originally thought as Newman Pask. Newman & Lambert [Senior] were believed to be brothers, the sons of Edward and Sarah Pask née ?

In addition, at the same time independently, Joseph Starbuck contacted me and provided information on Mary Pask who married Robert DOWNS on 20 October 1823 in Ryhall, Rutland, and was born in 6 June 1802 in Barnack, Northamptonshire. It was realised that Mary was also a daughter of Edward and Sarah Pask née ? This provided a new lead that perhaps they also lived in Barnack, and Ryhall. This corner of Lincolnshire adjoins Rutland, and Northamptonshire. Stamford, Barnack and Ryhall are all within a five mile radius of Barholm.

Whilst viewing the National Burial Index for another totally different family, an entry for Barnack jumped out at me. Edward was buried on 12 March 1836 in St. John the Baptist, Barnack, Northamptonshire, and his wife Sarah although living in Stamford in 1841, was buried on 1 August 1842 also in St. John the Baptist, Barnack. Subsequently their approximate dates of births are now known.

We will keep on putting the pieces together, although our first task will be to go back and unravel the mix up with Newman & Lambert [Senior].

Descendants of John & Mary Maria Pask née Pinder

Pat Pinder wrote to us via Ancestry. She is researching her husband's family who are related to John & Mary Maria Pask née Pinder. Pat provided access to her family tree in Ancestry and I was able to establish additional information relating to the Mary's relations and her descendants. Many thanks to Pat for sharing the information.

Their youngest daughter was Fanny Pask who married George Fortescue c1857. Fanny and George Fortescue had three children:

I have now located them in the 1861 (transcribed as Fostergen), 1871, and 1881 censuses. George's death was registered in 1891 in the Dewsbury registration district.

Back in February, Hilary McDermott wrote to me about Fanny, as after George's death, Fanny married her cousin John PASK in 1893 in the Dewsbury registration district. I am still trying to establish who John's parents were.

This information will be included in the next website update which is imminent.
