Descendants of James Pask from New Zealand

James Pask (1835-1905) originated from Essex. He was the eldest son of of James Horton Pask and Julia Asplin. His father immigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1855, and James joined him there.

He married his first wife, Maria Mitchell in 1861 Melbourne. James and Maria then immigrated to Wellington, New Zealand, where Maria died in 1869.  They had five children.

James then married Mary Allen in 1870. They went on to have nine children - James had 14 children altogether.

Dianne Baird née Pask is the 2 x grand-daughter of James. We have been corresponding with Dianne since 2 January 2002. She has been a major resource in compiling this family.

On 30 July, Dianne created a new Facebook Group - Keeping Up With The Pasks, which focuses on the descendants of James.

In a very short space of time, 49 members have joined - well done!

With the help of Dianne, Caroline Churchill, and several of the Facebook Group, we have been able to increase the number of James' descendants. Initially, we had 205. This has now been increased to 228.

These new descendants can be seen on the Pask website. See
Chart 10: Essex Main Progenitor - John PASK, (1771-1847) Thundersley, Essex #2493

Please note: Detailed narratives are available for deceased descendants - their name are underscored in the chart. Only names appear for 'living' people - their names are not underscored.

If you have any corrections, or additional information, we would welcome your information. Please contact us at pask@one-name.org; or join the Facebook Group Keeping Up With The Pasks.

Website Update 13 August 2017

The website was updated yesterday evening, Sunday 13 August 2017.

37 new narratives have been added, and 33 updated, since the last update on 14 July. There is now a total of 12,178 detailed narratives available on the website and 19,597 people (42 new) people in our database.

The focus of the update was initially to reinstate lost files due to our portable hard-drive becoming corrupt immediately after the previous website update. Our worst nightmare! Fortunately, we were able to reinstate the majority of the files from our backup systems. However, the last website update had to be manually replicated.

Once that was completed, on 7 August, the focus was the New Zealand branch of family group 10 Essex Main Progenitor - John PASK, (1771-1847) Thundersley, Essex. See the separate blog on this research.

Scotlands People

Over the past two weeks, our research focus has been the National Records of Scotland (Scotlands People) https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

Although we researched Scotlands People in its early days, we recognised that there is now a lot more records. We found:

  • Birth Registrations -     24 PASKs, 4 PASKEs
  • Marriage Registrations -  45 PASKs, 1 PASKE, and 1 PAASKEs
  • Death Registrations - 17 PASKs, 3 PASKEs, and 1 PAASKE
  • Divorce - 5 PASKs
  • Electoral Roll (available at FindmyPast) - 24 PASKs, 4 PASKEs
Whilst, we have not been able to identify all those listed, we have updated a lot of narratives relating to the PASK(E)s and their families, who lived in Scotland for part of their lives.

We also identified another non-UK based family:

Rudolph Harald PAASKE lived in Copenhagen, Denmark in the 1850s #20127
Rudolph Harald PAASKE lived in Copenhagen, Denmark. His son Viktor Emanuel PAASK lived with his wife Elizabeth, and their family in Leith, Midlothian, Scotland.

This information has been included in the website update yesterday, Friday 14 July 2017.

24 new narratives have been added, and 42 narratives updated, since the last website update on 1 July. There are now a total of 12,165 detailed narratives available on the website and 19,555 people (30 new) people in our database.

The Wonders of DNA

As detailed in the previous blog Family Chart 11 - Descendants of John Pask from Gautby Lincolnshire on 10 March, we were fortunate to recruit a male to do a Y-DNA test.

The results were received this morning, and are worth their weight in gold! It established that John Pask (c1745-1793) is linked to the main PASK Lincolnshire progenitor.

John is the progenitor of Chart 11: John PASK, (c1745-1793) married Elizabeth FOUNTAIN and they lived in Gautby, Lincolnshire #7697. His 521 descendants will now be assigned to Chart 01.

Thoroughout March, and early April, we have been reviewing the 523 people assigned to Chart 11, trying to find a possible link. Fortunately the DNA result has now given us which family to focus on, as Chart 01 families originated in Washington in the late 1500s, and then Wellingore in the early 1700s, spreading throughout Lincolnshire in the mid 1700s.

A superb result - sincere thanks to the Y-DNA Tester. Our findings will be included in the next website update.

If you are interested in doing a DNA test - there are now tests available for males and females. Do get in touch.

Family Chart 11 - Descendants of John Pask from Gautby Lincolnshire

A couple of weeks ago, we were fortunate to recruit a male to do a Y-DNA test. The results will hopefully help considerably in establishing whether John Pask (c1745-1793) is linked to other PASKs from Lincolnshire.

John is the progenitor of Chart 11: John PASK, (c1745-1793) married Elizabeth FOUNTAIN and they lived in Gautby, Lincolnshire #7697.

At the last website update, there were 523 people assigned to Chart 11. The majority of the narratives were last updated in 2006. So we decided to review this family, and include the latest information, now readily available on the internet. This includes, baptism, marriage, and burial transcripts and images from the parish registers. Also the new GRO online index, which now has the mother's maiden name for indexes between 1837 and 1911 - a significant 'new' resource. Also The 1939 Register, a superb resource that was like a ‘census’ and taken on 29 September 1939 just after the outbreak of war. It was then used to issue identify cards, and subsequently ration cards.

So far, we have found an additional 41 descendants, and have only touched the surface of Chart 11. We will continue to work on this family whilst we wait for the DNA results - this normally takes 4-6 weeks from receipt at the laboratory in Texas, USA. So watch this space.

In the meantime, if you have any additional information on Chart 11, don't hesitate to contact us at pask@one-name.org.

Descendants of Clarence Chester Pask

Back Row, L-R: Iola Maxine; either Loyal, or Charles "Raymond"; Arlene Grace; and Clarence Chester Charles
Front Row, L-R: R.T; Duane Potter; Loyal or Charles "Raymond"
Recently independently, by sheer coincidence, we received information from two descendants of Clarence Chester Pask and his wife Daisy Ethel Pask née Sweet (known as Ethel).

In early January, we received an email from Darlene Yarger, about her grandfather Charles Raymond Pask the eldest son of Clarence. Darlene's son Rathe has a detailed tree in Ancestry, which has been of considerable help in putting the pieces together. As we were away on holiday, we did not have time to update the website with this new information.

Last week, we were working on the website update, when surprisingly more new information came in on this same family.

On February 17, in the Pask Family History Facebook Group, Cindy Moore née Pask, the granddaughter of Clarence, posted this photograph of Clarence, and his family. Cindy's father was Kenneth Clarence Pask, the youngest son of Clarence.

Clarence Chester Pask was born on 16 June 1838 in Anwick, Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of Joseph George PASK. His parents immigrated to Ohio in 1844.

Many thanks to Darlene, and Cindy, for the wealth of information provided. The website has now been updated with Clarence's 51 descendants - however, there are many more needing additional research.

Clarence is Stuart's 4th cousin twice removed.

New Family Chart 83: Family of Michael PASZKIET born in Poland c1835

Steve Pete Pask (1917-2009)
father of Steve

Steve Paske, from Texas, contacted us on 24 January, and provided information on his great-grandfather Michael Paszkiet who was born in Poland c1835. He immigrated to Texas, USA, where he met his wife Josepha Filuta. They married in 1868 in New Waverly, Walker County, Texas. They had seven children. The family americanized their name to PASKE.

Steve gave us a brief synopsis of Michael's family, and Steve's line of descent from Michael. We did some extensive research - fortunately comprehensive Texan records are readily available

Subsequently, we have created a new family chart 83, and it contains 126 people - descendants of Michael Paske, formerly Paszkiet.
