Website Update 3 November 2018

The website was updated 3 November 2018. 46 new narratives have been added, and 260 changed, since the last website update on 2 September 2018. There are now a total of 12,555 detailed narratives available on the website and 20,131 people (60 new) in our database.

The focus of this website update was to identify those men who were killed in action in World War I, and II - Lest we forget. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website showed that there were 52 PASK(E) men. These are now indicated with a poppy icon against their name.

In addition, more information was kindly provided by Vickie Eggers, on the German family Chart 82: Herman PASKE & his wife Johanna LERISUS, whose descendants immigrated to Wisconsin, USA. This also coincided with an obituary, kindly transcribed by Denise Grant, that included other members of this PASKE family. There is a lot more on this family, and we will endeavour to include this information in the near future.

Website Update 24 August 2014

The website was updated today, Sunday 24 August. This was an extensive update. 171 new narratives have been added since the last update.

Will of Alice Herne née Paske dated 25 November 1628

This relates to the descendants of John Pask who was a Yeoman of Stradishall, who died in 1577.

Earlier this month, Peter Whitlock, a fellow Guild of One-Name Studies member who runs the Whitlock Family Association, contacted us. He wrote:

I am looking for descendants of the two Paske sisters who married Hernes.

Alice Paske married Richard Herne Feb.18,1592 St. Vedast
Jane Paske married Robert Herne Jan.6,1602 St. Vedast

I have Alice (Paske) Herne's very interesting Will. She lists all the children of her sister Jane Herne.

Alice Paske was the daughter of John PASKE Jnr and Mary GOLDSBOROW.

Peter has provided not only a copy of the will, but also a transcript of the will. As he says, it is a very detailed will, and names her sister Jane's children as well as her own children.

We are currently putting all the pieces together, and doing some very interesting research. Richard Herne was Sheriff of London in 1618 - a very prestigious position.

In our research we found the fact that Alice & Richard Herne had a grandson Sir Nathaniel Herne (1629-1679), who married Sarah Ironside, and their son Nathaniel Herne is reputed to be the 7 x great-grandfather of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Lady Diana's 9 x great-uncle.

We plan to include details of Alice's will in the next website update.

Descendants of Colonel Henry Gresham Paske

This relates to the descendants of John Pask who was a Yeoman of Stradishall, and died in 1577.

Last Saturday afternoon we had the pleasure and privilege to visit Major "Sam" Gresham Paske MC, together with his son Christopher.

They showed us the Coat of Arms and Pedigree for their family. The pedigree is believed to have been commissioned by Colonel Henry Gresham Paske (1836-1908), between 1885 and 1902. He was Sam's grandfather.

The original scroll was approximately 32 inches wide by 40 inches long, and contained 9 generations descending from John Pask of Stragewell, Suffolk. On a separate scroll, Sam has annotated the chart and included a further four generations.

The motto "virtus flos pulcherimus" means "the power of the flower", and probably refers to the Pasque flower.

We also had the opportunity to see other family memorabilia, from this distinguished family. A superb visit that makes family history research so worthwhile.

Website Updated 4 April 2014

The website was updated yesterday evening. 83 new narratives have been added since the last update on 1 January. This makes a total of 10,086 detailed narratives now available on the website - although altogether there was an increase of 204 people, including living people, making a total of 16,527 people in our database.

The focus of the update was Family Chart 09: John PASKE, was a Yeoman of Stradishall, Suffolk (d1577 ). There are currently 242 descendants, with their spouses, within this family group. There were several members of the clergy, based in Creeting St. Peter, Suffolk. Additionally there were several military personnel based in the Crimea, and India. Whilst we have been researching this family for some considerable time, the recent release by FindMyPast of the British India Office Collection has significant increased our knowledge of this family.

There were also a few updates on the PASKEs of Monmouthshire in Family Groups 42, and 49.

John Bensley Gresham Page Paske

This relates to the descendants of John Pask whose son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW and they lived in Stragwell, Suffolk.

As a follow-on to the recent blog on Henry Gresham Paske. Pam Mercier wrote to us about Henry's uncle, John Bensley Gresham Page Paske.

Pam writes:

I am researching the Gresham name and have noted that several Paske men bear that name as part of the forenames.

It has been my experience that usually having a surname as part of your forename indicates a marriage of a Gresham woman into that line.

The first I can find is John Bensley Gresham Page Paske 1791 Barking Suffolk, he married according to the IGI and East India co records to a Harriet Newman and had one daughter Harriet Bensley Gresham Paske who died in 1837 a few months after giving birth to a son from her marriage to Francis Henry Crozier( 1836 Madras) the son was called Gresham Paske Rawson Crozier b1837 Madras d1870 Wandsworth. Gresham married Laura Kew in 1859 in South Kensington and had three children:
Walter Gresham Crozier 1860-1871
Montague Liston Paske Crozier 1868 1909 unmarried
Margaret Hester Crozier 1869

We agree entirely with Pam, we also believe that these are mother's maiden names passed through the generations. Unfortunately we are not sure which mother, or mothers had these names.

Henry Gresham Paske

This relates to the descendants of John Pask whose son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW and they lived in Stragwell, Suffolk.

Martin Brady, contacted us again today. He is not related, however he is very interested in military history. He has provided information before - see a previous blog.

This time he has provided a gem - a carte de visite, or visiting card, of Henry Gresham Paske.

Henry was the son of Edward & Helen Amelia Paske née Gurley. He was a Lieutenant in the 95th Foot (Derbyshire) and was listed in the medal roll for the Indian Mutiny 1857-1859.

I received some very timely information from Jo Pask today, she found a snippet of information in the East Anglian Times edition 1944:

Miss Helen Paske of Wanstead on November 14th 1944 celebrated her 104th Birthday. She was born at Creeting St Peter Rectory, daughter of the Rev. Edward Paske.

I am currently researching this family. Helen's brothers served in India.

PASKEs of India

This information relates to the yellow-icon tree - descendants of John Paske c1600, who lived in Cambridgeshire - his son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW.

As a follow on from the previous blog on this branch of the PASKEs, Colleen Willis has again come up with some very interesting information. She pointed me to a source not previously searched - the British Library website, in the India Office Records.

It took me several minutes to find what Colleen was referring to. Even knowing it was there, the website was not intuitive. However it was worth persevering. The trick is to search the home page of the British Library for the India Office Records, then look for the sentence

The India Office Family History Search database contains around 300,000 records for British and European people in India between 1600 and 1949.

If you use the search option at the top of the webpage, it just takes you back to the British Library search that has 33 records relating to books written by Paskes, or about Paskes. However using the hyperlink India Office Family History Search, it provides 20 detailed records, providing some births, marriages, and deaths and some biographies. For example for

Paskeville, Australia

This information relates to the yellow-icon tree - descendants of John Paske c1600, who lived in Cambridgeshire - his son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW.

Colleen Willis, our ardent researcher in Australia is researching several Paskes who were born in India, and then immigrated to Australia. During the process of following up on these Paskes, we found that Edward Hanson Paske who was born in Madras India, and was a Colonel in the Army, was related to a Lady L. Jervois. Edward's wife was called Amelia Caroline Jervois [not Jarvis, as listed on the website).

Lady L. Jervois was probably the wife of the Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, GCMG, CB who was a military engineer and Governor of the Straits Settlements, South Australia and New Zealand. The Governor had the habit of naming towns in South Australia after his friends, and family.

You can imagine our surprise when seaching for more information on Sir Jervois that we found Paskeville, a town 19 km ESE of Kadina Australia, was named on 4 March 1880, after General Paske, a brother-in-law of Governor Jervois.
