Descendants of George & Annie Pask of Camberwell, London

This information relates to Chart 41 - James PASK, who lived in Finsbury, London c1758.

Earlier this year we were in contact with Michael Pask whose grandparents were Robert John & Phoebe Pask née Coode. This has been one of the most challenging bits of research we have done. With Michael's perservation, I think we have finally resolved the mystery.

Registered names, and names used in the census do not always tie up. In the case of Michael's ancestors George & Annie were found easily in the 1891 and 1901 census. However we drew a complete blank with the 1881-1861 censuses. Similarily with George's birth, death, and marriage registrations.

Michael purchased three certificates relating to children listed in the 1891 & 1901 censuses. Unfortunately none of them had the father's name of George, or mother's name of Annie.

In the 1891 census, Annie was listed as Mary Ann. Fortunately her place of birth was Wantage in both censuses. Persuing this line, we researched all the Annie, or Mary Ann's born in Wantage, and this paid off as we found that Mary Ann Stroud married an Edwin Pask in 1876 in Wandsworth registration district.

Knowing this, we immediately identified Edwin who was already in our database - we last did some preliminary research on this family in December 2003, when online records were very limited. We then did another search of the 1851-71 censuses, and found he was in fact called Edward, and was the son of John & Isabella Pask née Gollan.

I think this is a prime example of how difficult research can be at times, and how rewarding it is when you finally solve the mystery.

This information, together with George & Annie's descendants will be included in the next website update.

The website was updated on Saturday 9 August. This update includes:

• Additional information on the descendants of Philip & Rosetta Pask née Keen, including images from the family bible provided by Alan Michael Pask at the Pask Family Gathering.
• Transcript of Pask Monumental Inscriptions at Wickhambrook, Great & Little Whelnetham, provided by Jo Pask. She visited these graveyards on Monday 28 July 2008 with Dorothy Pask.

  Charles Pask and Alice Louisa Weeks, who married in St. Matthew, Brixton, London on 10 August 1895;
• Descendants of Francis & Elizabeth Playle née Pask, who married in October 1782 in Stambourne, Essex. Additional details will be provided in the next website update, as updated by Geoffrey Brightwell, via GenesReunited.

Pask Family Gathering 2008 - Photographs

I have now included an additional 114 photographs on the website. There is a link from the Pask Family Gathering 2008 webpage.

Wherever possible, we have provided a caption detailing who is in the picture. Any additions, or corrections would be appreciated. We have not provided a caption to the group photographs, as it will take some to complete these. A volunteer would be most welcomed to take on this task.

If anybody would like a particular photograph(s), please e-mail us with the file name, and we will provide the print-quality image.

In the foreseeable future, I will be writing a detailed account to be included in the website, the Pask Publications, and the Guild of One-Names Studies journal.

Pask Family Gathering - July 26 2008

What a superb event! 210 Pasks, and Pask-related people converged on Whepstead Village Hall in Suffolk on a glorious sunny day. They travelled from far afield, including New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and throughout England and Wales.


Some of the success is accredited to Jo for her local knowledge. She recommended the hall, and organized all the local logistics in Suffolk, leaving us to focus on the genealogical side. Also most sincerest thanks to all the helpers, including Fiona & Francis, Ros & John, Marjorie & Ted, Jeff, and Paula. With special thanks to Judy, Tessa & David, David & Karen, and Chris & Alyson for the sumptuous BBQ they provided, that was enjoyed by all in the early evening.

However, the main success was to all those who attended, and made the day such a momentous occasion.

The Bury Free Press attended the event, and an article is in the paper this week, together with a photograph provided by Ian Konrath. For those who don't live in the area, the Bury Free Press article is available online, and the group photograph is available on the Pask, Paske One-Name Study website.

We are currently collecting together all the photographs, and these will be available on the Pask, Paske One-Name Study website over the weekend. So if you attended, and have taken any photographs we encourage you to e-mail them to us. Preferably identifying who the people are.

A full detailed account, and illustrated webpages will be available shortly. We just need a few days to recuperate, and to savour the wonderful memories.

Website Update 13 July 2008

The website was updated today, Sunday 13 July.

This update is again focusing on the preparations for the Pask Family Gathering on July 26. In particular:

• Stephen Pask, provided information relating to Chart 30: James PASK, (1835- ) Southrow, or Southrey, near Bardney, Lincolnshire #1071.

Pasks of Monmouthshire

This information relates to the Monmouthshire progenitor Isaac Paske, (c1705 - ) who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire. Also it refers to
William Pask (c1720- ) who lived in Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire.

Yesterday, Sylvia Rycroft updated us on her latest trip to Monmouthshire to research the parish records at the Gwent RO. Sylvia also purchased all the remaining Paske Wills.

As a consequence, the wills have thrown up some interesting information on various Monmouthshire families. From these wills she has established, changes to the following:

• Charles Pask, who married Rachel Morgan, and lived in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire in the 1800s has now been linked back to William & Mary Pask née ?
• William Paske, who married Ann Jones, was previously thought to be the son of Isaac & Rachael Paske née Hugh is now the son of William & Mary Pask née ?

The wills have also enabled Sylvia to piece together some of the other Paske families, but not to absolutely reveal where they fitted within the wider family group. There are still some pieces missing from the jigsaw and they may never be found because the records do not exist.

So if you are a descendant of the Pasks of Monmouthshire, check out the revised Monmouthshire Main Progenitor: Isaac PASK, (c1705 - ) lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire #3687 (Chart 4), and Chart 42: William PASK (c1720- ) lived in Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire #10869, as there has been a reassignment of several families.

The PASKs of Monmouthshire book will be revised after the Pask Family Gathering. However, we are working on the charts and these will be on display on the day.

With so many Williams born in the period, and living in the same area, it is no wonder that the wrong assumptions have been made.

We look forward to meeting Sylvia, and her second cousin Diane on July 26 at the Pask Family Gathering.

Registrations for the Pask Family Gathering have increased significantly over the past month.

PASKs of Monmouthshire Volume I

This information relates to the Monmouthshire progenitor Isaac Paske, (c1705 - ) who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.
I am very pleased to announce that a new book is now available on http://www.lulu.com/.

PASKs of Monmouthshire Volume I is the fourth book in a series of books that is being published for the Pask Family Gathering to be held in Whepstead, Suffolk on Saturday July 26, 2008.

This 268-page book covers the descendants of Isaac Pask, the main Monmouthshire progenitor. There are over 40 detailed charts for the main families, minibiographies of approximately 1,040 people, together with 100 photographs. Also information on the Pask, Paske One-Name Study and a full index by surname and christian names of the people mentioned in the book.

We would like to acknowledge and thank all the people who helped make this book a published reality. Particularly to Paula Payne, Pat Maybrey, and Sylvia Rycroft, who have provided a wealth of information including photographs, certificates, and anecdotes on these Monmouthshire families, and the descendants of Isaac Pask.

Website Now Available

I am delighted, and very relieved to say that the website is now available again. Although the web hosting provider is different, this will not make any difference as the url is still http://www.pask.org.uk/.

At the same time I have updated the narratives section. The main changes since the last website update are as a result of changes identified during the formatting of the book Monmouthshire Volume I.


This unexpected delay and additional work, will regretably mean that there will be insufficient time to work on the book Monmouthshire Volume II. This will now be scheduled to be compiled after the Pask Family Gathering.


Once I finish the publishing process for the Monmouthshire Volume I, I will have to focus on the final preparations for the Pask Family Gathering which is now only 7 weeks away.

Pask Website

Unfortunately my web host provider www.uk2.net instead of providing me with an automatic renewal (as they have done for 8 years), have changed their renewal process. Subsequently on Friday the website was no longer available. I tried to rectify this immediately, only to be advised that they had doubled their prices.

Needless to say, I am moving to another hosting provider! The money really wasn't the issue - the customer care and support was totally lacking.

However, the move takes a few days to set up and process. If you use the standard link www.pask.org.uk you will be redirected to the new hosting server. It will show "Under Construction", until everything goes through.

Thank you for your patience! Hopefully by Monday this will be resolved.

Latest Information on Pask Family Gathering

Registrations for the Pask Family Gathering are gaining momentum. Today alone, we received registrations for 18 people!

The current statistics are:

• Booked: 40 adults / 1 children
• Planned, but not booked: 49 adults / 2 children
• Helpers: 8 adults

This gives us a potential total of 100+.

Many of those that have booked were delightful surprises. The current breakdown of people are descendants from the following Pask locations:

1. Suffolk - 46
2. Lincolnshire - 40/3
3. Monmouthshire - 6
4. To be determined - 4
5. Essex - 1

Don't forget when completely your registration forms to include the names of all those attending. This is so that we can provide a name badge so that we can identify each other.

Pask Family Gathering 2008 - Registration Form

The Pask Family Gathering is now only 10 weeks away. You are encouraged to complete the registration form and send it to Jo Pask, who has taken on the challenge of coordinating the logistics in Suffolk.

The Family Gathering will start on Saturday at 11:00 am, and continue throughout the day, until 10:00 pm. The BBQ will be available from 5 pm
onwards. On Sunday, those still in the area, will meet for coffee from 10:00-12:00 noon.

We have extended the hire of the hall and grounds until Sunday, so caravan and camping facilities are available, for a charge of £5 per site. This will include access to the catering and toilet facilities in the hall, including a disabled toilet and baby changing facilities. However there are no showers.

Throughout the event there will be displays of family trees, photographs, certificates, and memorabilia. You will have the opportunity to see the Pask website, and blog, and a slideshow of photographs. Tables will be available for each family branch, and we encourage you to bring along your own information to display.

Unidentified Photograph

Chris Bell sent me a photograph of her grandmother Louisa Westmoreland née Pask, together with possibly a niece.

Chris writes:

My gran Louisa is the older person. The younger person looks like it could be a niece. It was taken when Louisa's sisters Lucy and Ethel came over from Canada.

We reckon that the photograph was taken in the 1950s in the Arboretum in Nottingham.

Louisa Westmoreland née Pask died on 18 April 1961 in the Nottingham registration district, at the age of 73.

Website Update 12 May 2008

The website was updated today, Monday 12 May. This update is again focused on the Pasks of Monmouthshire, and their descendants.

This now finalises the main updates required for the PASKs of Monmouthshire Volume I & II. The next step is to download the information from our database, and reformat it for the publishing process. A little behind schedule, but hopefully not too late for the Pask Family Gathering on July 26.

The website was updated today, Saturday 10 May. This update is again focused on the Pasks of Monmouthshire, and their descendants.

Additionally the update includes information, as detailed in the previous blog Descendants of John Thomas Pask of Newark.

There are now 7,566 narratives available. An increase of 63 narratives since the beginning of May. Although there have been many more "living", that are not included in the website. A total of 10,368 are now included in the Pask One-Name Study database.

Descendants of John Thomas Pask of Newark

This information relates to Chart 18 , Joseph Pask, (1761 - 1831) who lived in Caythorpe, Lincolnshire.

Descendants of Amos & Ann Pask née Evans

This information relates to the Monmouthshire progenitor Isaac Paske, (c1705 - ) who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

In January, Pat Blake née Morgan contacted us, and provided two three-generation charts, and photographs relating to 30+descendants of Amos & Ann Pask née Evans. This has taken quite a while to include into the database. However I am delighted to say that this has now been completed.

Pat's mother was Beryl Morgan née Pask, the daughter of Amos & Ann Pask née Evans. Beryl married Thomas George Morgan M.B.E., and they lived in Risca, Monmouthshire where their six children were born.

Descendants of John & Mary Elizabeth Gulliver née Pask

This information relates to Chart 34, the descendants of Philip Pask, (1768-1843), who lived in Bryngwyn, Monmouthshire.

I was recently in touch with Leslie Warren, who is the great-grandson of John & Mary Elizabeth Gulliver née Pask.

Leslie has shared a lot of information, photographs and certificates of the ancestors and descendants of Mary Elizabeth. Leslie has well documented his family tree on Ancestry.

This information will be included in the next website update.

Descendants of James & Mary Ann Partridge née Pask

This information relates to the main Suffolk tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 who lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

Yesterday we received a letter from Janet Lawrence, whose great-great grandmother was Mary Ann Partridge née Pask.

Janet advised us of two corrections to Pasks of Suffolk Volume II:

1. James & Mary Ann Partridge née Pask - their daughter Harriet married George Warden (not Jane). They had a daughter called Lily born in 1877 in Ipswich, Suffolk.
2. James & Emma Winwood née Pask - their son William Robert Windwood was born on 1877. He married Lily Warden, his first cousin, once removed.

Janet has provided additional information, and this will be included in the database, and updated on the website, and in the next version of the book.

Descendants of George & Mary Ann Pask née Bettoney

This information relates to Chart 7, the descendants of Henry Paske, (1765 - 1845), who lived in Kedington, Suffolk.

This week we received two letters from Joyce Pinder, whose mother was Florence Stevens née Pask. Florence was the daughter of Walter & Laura Pask née Allum.

Joyce has provided her extensive tree. This shows that Walter & Laura had six children - Florence, Walter, May, Kitty, Lily, and Elsie. In addition, we have located in the GRO indexes, Albert (twin of May), and Sarah E., who both died in infancy.

Additionally Joyce has provided a lead on Henry's parents. This will be followed through.

During the next few weeks Joyce's information will be included in the database, and updated on the website.

Descendants of William Alfred Pask II

This information relates to the chart 6 - descendants of Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, born 1739 in Kedington, Suffolk.

This week we received an e-mail from Geoffrey Alan Pask, from Canada.

Geoff is a direct descendant of Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, a grandson of William Alfred Pask II and Anne Sarah Rowe. He is the younger of 2 sons of Gordon Reginald & Eileen Norah Pask née Morgan. He was born and married in Beaconsfield, but now lives in Cornwall, Ontario, after emigrating to Canada in 1957.

Geoff is planning to visit the UK in the near future, and has kindly offered to provide an update on his family.

Website Update 2 May 2007

The website was updated today, Friday 2 May. This update is mainly focused on the Pasks of Monmouthshire, and their descendants. This is in preparation for two more books - PASKs of Monmouthshire Volume I & II.

Several people have been helping with these updates, including Paula Payne, Ian Bunning, and Linda Brookes. Many thanks for their willingness to share their research.

The Master Genealogist

Yesterday, at the Society of Genealogists I gave a half-day tutorial. See the previous blog Using Master Genealogist - Advanced Tutorial for the information and links.

Using Master Genealogist - Advanced Tutorial

Tomorrow, at the Society of Genealogists I will give a half-day tutorial on "Using Master Genealogist - Advanced". This is relating to the software The Master Genealogist (TMG) by Wholly Genes - the software I use to record all the information on the Pask One-Name Study, and the Uridge One-Name Study.

Surprisingly enough there is anticipated over 15 participants, an almost unheard of number for an advanced tutorial. The numbers were undoubtedly boosted by the recent announcement in the TMG monthly newsletter.

Thomas & Matilda Beeden née Pask

This information relates to the descendants of James PASK, (1807-1889) who lived in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.

Today Gordon Beeden sent me the marriage certificate of Thomas & Matilda Beeden née Pask, who married on 26 December 1914 in Harrow Green, Essex.

Thomas & Matilda were cousins - their common progenitors were Henry & Christina Pask née Drake.

This is the second marriage certificate that Gordon has provided. Last month he provided another Beeden-Pask marriage certificate. Kate Pask married Thomas Beeden on 17 March 1888 in the Register Office, Plomesgate, Suffolk. They were the parents of Thomas Beeden, who married Matilda.

Many thanks to Gordon for providing these certificates.

Website Update 22 March 2008

The website was updated on Saturday 22 March. This update includes a major change to the narratives section of the website. However, I am sure that you will agree that the makeover is worth it. There are several new sections:

• Narrative info - provides a key to the new icons now used.
• Charts - a new look, listed by county and providing a brief summary of the original person, together with their icon.
• My Family - details Stuart's pedigree, and descendancy charts for his father, and 3 x greatgrandfathers.
• Photograph Album - a welcome new section, provides a thumbnail of available photographs. Click on the photograph and it will take you to the person's narrative.
• Pask DNA Project - a brief synopsis of information on the DNA Project.
• Select by ID - if you know the ID number of an individual in the database you can find that person by entering the number in this box.

Hope you enjoy the new look, the icons, and the information now available. If you find any missing links, or corrections, do let me know and I will gladly correct them.

All Change - Icons

In preparation for the Pask Family Gathering, we have revamped all the icons depicting the tree, or chart a person belongs to.

At the Pask Family Gathering, we feel that people will want to identify what area, tree, or chart those attending originated from. So we have devised a new method that will be used on the website, blogs, and other identification purposes.

In future, all people with Lincolnshire roots will have the green colour. If they are a descendant of the main progenitor, this will be indicated by the tree icon, with the colour green. If they have Lincolnshire roots but not linked to the main progenitor, they will have a piece of a puzzle, with a number that depicts the chart they are linked to.

Similarily, all people with Suffolk roots will have the colour gold. If they are a descendant of the main progenitor, this will be indicated by the tree icon, with the gold colour. If they have Suffolk roots, but not linked to the main progenitor, they will have a piece of a puzzle, with a number that depicts the chart they are linked to.

Monmouthshire will be depicted by the navy colour.

Essex will be depicted by the red colour.

Those from miscellaneous areas will be depicted by the purple colour.

Apologies for the initial confusion, but the end results will be worth it. This way we can clearly identify the area, tree, or chart that people are connected to. There are over 40 charts, and therefore insufficient colours to assign a different colour to each chart.

This will be reflected in the next website update.

Descendants of James & Mary Pask née Allen

This information relates to the Purple-Icon tree - descendants of John & Frances Pask née Haffinden who originated from Thundersley, Essex.

Last July, in the blog titled Descendants of James & Mary Pask née Allen, I wrote that I had been in contact with Margaret Robinson who has a very slight connection to the Pask family in New Zealand. Earlier this week, Dianne Baird e-mailed us. We have not be in touch with Dianne for some time. In the past she has provided us with a lot on information on the descendants of John & Frances Pask née Haffinden.

Dianne writes:

Allen is my fathers youngest brother and therefore he is the son of Raymond James Pask and Winifred Ward. That’s makes him the grandson of Ernest Pask and Ellen Ellergy and the great grandson of James Pask and Maria Mitchell.

Dianne mentions that their children are Sharlene, Shaine or Shayne, and Tracey. Kevin is Sharlene’s husband. The confusion is probably that when Sharlene and Kevin got married, Kevin originally took the Pask name but they now have changed to his name of Mulgrew.

Many thanks Dianne for the clarification. This information has been included, and available in the next website update.

PASKs of Suffolk Volume II - Wickhambrook

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 who lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

I am very pleased to announce that two more books are now available on http://www.lulu.com/.

PASKs of Suffolk Volume II - Wickhambrook is the third book in a series of books that will be published for the Pask Family Gathering to be held in Whepstead, Suffolk on Saturday July 26, 2008.

This book covers some of the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, the main Suffolk progenitors. This book focuses on the descendants of their second son Daniel, and his wives Elizabeth Pask née Manning, and Mary Pask née Peachey.

Please note: There are two books that cover the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. PASKs of Suffolk Volume I covers the descendants of their eldest son John and his wife Catherine Pask née Kippen. If you are unsure of which book includes your family, e-mail us at pask@one-name.org.

PASKs of Suffolk Volume I - Wickhambrook is the second book in a series of books that will be published for the Pask Family Gathering to be held in Whepstead, Suffolk on Saturday July 26, 2008.

This book covers some of the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, the main Suffolk progenitors. This book focuses on the descendants of their eldest son John, and his wife Catherine Pask née Kippen.

Please note: There are two books that cover the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. PASKs of Suffolk Volume II covers the descendants of their second son Daniel, and his wives Elizabeth Pask née Manning, and Mary Pask née Peachey. If you are unsure of which book includes your family, e-mail us at pask@one-name.org.

This 228-page book, includes detailed charts for the main families, minibiographies of approximately 830 people, together with 170 photographs. Also information on the Pask, Paske One-Name Study and a full index by surname and christian names of the people mentioned in the book.

Descendants of Isaac Paske of Kilgwrrwg, Monmouthshire

This information relates to Chart 15, Isaac Paske,
(c1800-) who lived in Kilgwrrwg, Monmouthshire.

Paula Payne has provided me with a marriage in Mathern Church, on 5 May 1814 of Mary Pask & James Lewis. Paula's ancestors Isaac Pask, and Elizabeth Stephens were witnesses. This was a week before they married. Isaac & Mary were cousins. Mary was the daughter of William & Ann Pask née Thomas.

Paula also found in the same church, the marriage of Isaac Pask to Mary Morgan on 16 November 1818. This marriage was witnessed by Thomas Stephens & Mary Lewis [née Pask].

I searched the 1841 census, and found James & Mary Lewis living in Kilgwrrwg, in the household of Ann Pask, aged 84. Living nearby was Isaac's widow Mary Pask [now known to be Mary née Morgan].
This provides us with the missing link that Isaac's mother was Ann Pask née Thomas.

Chart 15, is now merged with Chart 4. Ann Pask née ? #5845, is also merged with Ann Pask née Thomas. This information will be included in the next website update.

Thomas & Sophia Pask née Willis

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

Second cousins Colin Hart & Maria Karg live thousands of miles apart. Colin in England, and Maria in Hawaii. However, thanks to the internet, they have been able to exchange a lot of information just recently about their common ancestors. Their great-grandmother was Ruth Minnie Simpson née Pask.

John has provided this superb photograph of Thomas & Sophia Pask née Willis.

John & Maria's information, together with several other photographs Colin has provided, will be included in the next website update. Many thanks to them both for sharing this valuable information.

George & Elizabeth Mason née Pask

This information relates to a currently unidentified main branch of the family with roots in London.

This morning, I received an inquiry from Larry Young. He writes:

There is but one Pask in my family tree, the name having come from two Birth Certificates. I am, however at a brick wall of sorts as I am unable to find a marriage certificate, and the surname Pask seems to be frequently misspelt as Park.

What I know about "my" Elizabeth Pask can be found at http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lhtyoung/p368.htm

Elizabeth was born c1824-27 in Middlesex, and married George Mason c1843. They had four children - James, Elizabeth, George, and Lucy. She was a widow in the 1861 census. Also listed was a nephew James Nye aged 18 also born in Middlesex.

I have searched our database, and unfortunately cannot find the marriage, or 1841 census. I also searched for Park, and other main variants. However like Larry, drew a blank.

Can anyone help with Larry's brickwall?

Unidentified Wedding Photograph

We received a delightful photograph from Linda, who is researching John Thomas Pask of Newark, who was the 2 x grandson of the progenitor Joseph Pask who originated from Caythorpe.
Linda writes:

I have come across a number of old photographs recently - one of which I attach for your kind information to share with people, and so to put a face to a name etc.

John Thomas Pask married Annie Perkins in Kettering in 1925. They lived in Northamptonshire, and had 3 sons and 1 daughter - Dorothy (Linda's mother). She previously wrote to us in December - see the blog Descendants of John Thomas Pask of Newark.

Can you recognise the photograph, it looks like it was taken in the 1920s?

Ethling (Etty) Harding née Pask

This information relates to the red-icon tree - descendants of Isaac PASK who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

Yesterday Paula Payne provided additional information, and several photographs of her descendants, including this photograph that shows four generations. The photograph is of Ethling Harding née Pask with her daughter Dulcie, granddaughter Roma, and great granddaughter Christine.

Ethling known as "Etty", lived with her husband John Robert Harding in 10 Trostrey Street Maindee Newport in the 1901 census.

Previously it was thought that Ethling was called Ethel Jane E. Pask. However Ethling and Ethel were born in the same year.This information will be corrected in the next website update.

Descendants of Thomas G. & Beryl Morgan née Pask

This information relates to Chart 15 , the descendants of Isaac Paske, (c1800 - ) who lived in Kilgwrrwg, Monmouthshire.

I heard today from Alison Highet who is researching her husband's ancestors. His grandparents were Thomas G. & Beryl Morgan née Pask. Beryl was born Mynyddslwyn, and was the daughter of Amos Pask, who lived in Kilgwrrwg, Monmouthshire.

Alison has traced her husband's ancestors back to Isaac (b about 1750). Together, I hope that we can find the missing link to connect his to the main Monmouthshire progenitor Isaac Pask, (c1705 - ) who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

Publishing Your Family History to the Web

Today, at the Society of Genealogists I gave a half-day tutorial on Publishing Your Family History to the Web.

This was different to the previous presentations on this subject, as it included an major update on the GEDCOM-based website. Gencircles has now been changed to MyHeritage. Additionally, a new section on Print On-Demand, the self-publishing options available on www.lulu.com.

Website Updated 19 January 2008

The website was updated today Saturday 19 January. This update includes significant information on the Monmouthshire Pask(e)s in preparation for a new book.

During the Christmas period I have been working extensively in collaboration with Sylvia Rycroft. She provided numerous charts that together with information based on the births, marriages, and deaths in the Monmouthshire, and surrounding districts linked together numerous "loose ends". A superb effort by Sylvia, without her information it would have taken considerably longer to determine these links.

Subsquently I established that William Paske who was born in 1768 in Cwmcarvan (Chart 4), was the great-grandson of Isaac Pask who was born in 1700, and lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire (Chart 12). These charts have been merged, and this family represented by the red-icon, and shown as Chart 4. This red-icon family now consists of over 613 direct descendants of Isaac Pask.

There are now three main progenitors in Monmouthshire:

1. Chart 4: Isaac PASK, (c1705 - ) lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire #3687


2. Chart 15: Isaac PASKE, (c1800 - ) lived in Kilgwrrwg, Monmouthshire #2855

Overall, a further 341 narratives are available. The database counter is now on the unique id #10084, however allowing for duplication deletions, and merges there are 9776 unique records in the database.

Descendants of John Thomas Pask of Newark

This information relates to Chart 18, Joseph PASK, (1761 - 1831) Caythorpe, Lincolnshire.

Last night we received an e-mail from Linda, who is researching John Thomas Pask of Newark, who was the 2 x grandson of the progenitor Joseph Pask who originated from Caythorpe.

Linda's mother (who was a Pask), is willing to arrange for one of her brothers to take part in the DNA project. This is excellent news, as it will be very interesting to see if this Lincolnshire branch has connections to the other branches currently being tested.

Linda's mother and her uncle are also keen to attend the Pask Family Gathering on 26 July 2008.

In the meantime, we look forward to hearing from Linda again, and updating this tree with the missing descendants.

Herbert Bunt

This information relates to Chart 29, the descendants of Thomas Pasque of Theberton Suffolk.

Herbert Bunt telephoned tonight. It is always good to hear from him. His enthusiam is such an inspiration. As detailed in previous blogs, last year Herbert featured in the BBC programme "Found" with Kate Adie. He is tracing his Pasque ancestors, who originated from Blyburgh in Suffolk.

I am trying to put pressure on him to come to the Pask Family Gathering in July 2008.

Pask Family Gathering 2008 - Update

Last weekend we visited Jo Pask, who is assisting us with the coordination of the Pask Family Gathering in Whepstead, Suffolk in July 2008.

Jo arranged for us to visit the village hall at Whepstead. We are truly delighted with the hall. It has excellent facilities, including the adjacent cricket and playing fields that can be used for the caravans and campers who are attending the Family Gathering. Additionally, set off the main road, there is parking facilities for 60-70 cars. The hall has a large, very well equipped kitchen, and bar, and meets our requirements superbly.

Additionally, during the weekend we were invited to an sumptuous dinner with Judy, who has very kindly volunteered to provide the BBQ for the evening event.

The remainder of the weekend was spent scanning over 100 photographs from Jo's family albums. These will be included in the new book Pasks of Wickhambrook, Suffolk. We are currently putting the final touches to the book and hope to have it released next week.

Sampler in Memory of Margret Herd

Yesterday evening I received a delightful e-mail from Alicja Fraser of Lincolnshire. She wrote:

I found the attached Sampler up in the attic of my home, several years ago. I came across it again today when tidying up and thought I would Google it and found the website about the Pask family and your email address. I wonder whether the sampler refers to your family tree. If so would you like it or is there a Herd family member that might like it?

I established that Margret [or Margaret] Herd was the mother of Elizabeth Pask née Herd, who was born in Heighington in 1829. Elizabeth married Michael Pask on 25 May 1853 in Washingborough. Elizabeth & Michael had seven children, including Sarah Ann Pask, who married Charles Willey, an ancestor of Andrew Willey, a researcher who contacted us in 2005, and provided a wealth of information on this family.

We will be contacting Andrew today, as Alicja is happy to pass on the sampler to his family.

William Alfred & Anna Sarah Pask née Rowe

This information relates to the khaki-icon tree - descendants of Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, born 1739 in Kedington, Suffolk.

Last month Judith Crust contacted us about William & Alice Maria Bartram née Pask. Judith wrote:

I recently discovered that my Great Grandfather's brother William Bartram married Alice and that she was a Pask. Although she is not a direct relative I have being doing a bit of research into her family. My mother was writing to Alice and I have letters from her dating 1954, so finding she died in 1955 explains why the letters stopped. ... My Great Grandfather Francis Bartram went back to England in 1936/37 (he came out to Australia to live ) and I have photos with the name of Mr and Mrs Pask written on the back.

Today, Judith has conquered her new scanner, and provided the first of several photographs. This first photograph written on the back is Mr and Mrs Pask 17.05.37 at Cromer. Mr & Mrs Pask were William Alfred & Anna Sarah Pask née Rowe.

This would coincide with the jubilee of King George VI's coronation on 12 May 1937. Only last week, when shopping at the nearby Brooklands M & S, we saw a similar car in the car park, and took a long time admiring it.
Since thanks to Judith for her perservance with the scanner, it was well worth her efforts.

Descendants of William & Caroline Amelia Paske née Budding

I am a direct descendant of William Paske and Caroline Amelia Budding (Usk, Mon) and have been researching my family tree for some years. My grandmother was Isabella Agatha Paske, daughter of Charles Paske and Adelaide Middleton.

This is particularly good news as we are about to start the preparations for the third book Pasks of Monmouthshire. Hopefully Sylvia can help us tie us some loose ends here, and also provide some valuable photographs. We look forward to exchanging information with Sylvia.

This information relates to Chart 16, the descendants of --?-- Pask, who lived in Hackthorne, Lincolnshire. He was the father of Thomas and William Pask.

Over the past few days we have been in contact with Jacqueline Brown via Genes Reunited. She is researching the descendants of Edward & Ellen Pask née Branham, in particular their daughter Charlotte Pask.

Jacqueline has provided information on the marriage of Charlotte to John William Hair, and their four children. This included Theresa Winifred Brooks née Hair, who was the mother, of Carol Gage née Brooks. Carol kindly provided information on this family in 2006, including photographs of Edward, and his wife Ellen Pask née Branham.

Descendants of James & Martha Pask née Heath

This information relates to Chart 30, the descendants of James Pask, (1835 - ) who lived in the hamlet of Southrow, or Southrey, near Bardney, Lincolnshire.

During the past few days we have been in contact with Bernard Seeling, the great-grandson of James & Martha Pask née Heath. Bernard's mother was Marie (or Maria) Pask, who married Charles Edward Arthur Seeling.

Charles was born in Auckland New Zealand, but lived in Wigan Lancashire, where he played for Wigan Rugby League before transferring to Dewsbury in 1937.

Bernard has provided a wealth of information relating to this family, and this will be included in the next website update.

Lambeth Marriages

Yesterday I received six marriage transcripts from Marion Harper Hopkins of the Guild of One-Name Studies.

They are as a result of the Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) Marriage Challenge. The Marriage Challenge is a Guild Project in which volunteers (Challengers) search for marriage entries in the deposited Parish Registers for a particular Registration District (RD) for the period 1837 to 1911.

These six marriages relate to the Lambeth Registration District, and include:

• James Pask and Charlotte Mary Chaffin - 24 April 1864
• Richard Wessell and Eliza Pask - 29 December 1870.
• Thomas Pask and Harriet Doe - 1 November 1877
• William Pash and Emma Dimmock - 26 August 1883 (originally indexed under the name of Pask.
• George Pask and Emily Adams - 9 March 1890
• John Bailey and Maud Isabella Paske - 12 August 1890

Copies of the marriage transcripts, and subsequently identified information will be included in the next website update.

Pasks of Wickhambrook Suffolk

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

We are very pleased to say that the draft of the book Pasks of Wickhambrook has been sent to the publishers Lulu. Hopefully the book will arrive in time for our forthcoming weekend in Suffolk. This is the second book in the series that we are publishing in preparation for the Pask Family Gathering on July 26, 2008.

The book is currently only a draft, and is not yet released. We need to proof it, and include all the photographs that have so kindly been provided by the researchers in this family. The released version will be available in early December - just in time to order it for Christmas presents!

There are 1000+ people mentioned, and it contains 47 descendancy charts, with the accompanying narratives. Once the photographs are in place, the book will probably be 300 pages, and cost approximately £8.90 (plus postage) in black and white. The book is double the size of the Pasks of Great Gonerby Lincolnshire.

During the compiling of this book we were amazed how many people with the same name (and not common names) married more than one Pask. These include ADAMS, BUCKLE, CURRY, FLACK, FULLER, GOLDSMITH, NEWMAN, ORRISS, PREWER, PRYKE, RAYNER, WILLINGHAM, to name a few.

The beauty of publishing to Lulu is that the update process is extremely easy, and as soon as additions or amendments are included, and the PDF is uploaded, the revised edition is available immediately to all new books ordered. So it is never too late to include that information, anecdote, or photograph.

We are going to have a breather for the next month. However, we plan to start drafting the Pasks of Monmouthshire over the Christmas period.

DNA Tests Completed

Both Stuart & John have completed their DNA tests, and returned the swabs to Family Tree DNA's office in Texas.

The genetic test kit consisted of a cheek scraper and collection tube. The test was a painless cheek scraping. The effect of using the scraper is about the same as brushing your cheek with a soft bristle toothbrush. Two backup scrapers & tubes were included to insure that they have good samples for their lab.

It will now take approximately seven weeks to test the DNA sample, analyze the specimens and compare the results to data in the existing genetic library. So we can expect the results just after Christmas. The results will be entered into Family Tree DNA's secure, private and confidential non-web-based genetic library. A comparison between the specific genetic markers and those of others in the database will then be performed and the results provided.

The Family Tree DNA's primary test attempts to determine if 2 people thought to be unrelated actually had a common ancestor. The test is for genealogy NOT for paternity, alimony or other legal purposes.

There are answers to many of the frequently asked questions available on the Family Tree DNA website. There is also a Genealogy & DNA Forum.

If you are interested in participating in the PASK DNA Project, just send us an e-mail. We are particularly interested in testing two PASK males from each of the family lines, detailed in the Charts webpage. By participating in this project you will enable us to link up many of these charts.

PASK DNA Project Now Set Up

The Pask DNA Project is now set up on the Family Tree DNA website. This will enable us to get the reduced project price of US$ 189 for the 37 marker Y DNA test.

Participating in this DNA Project is an opportunity for us to uncover information not provided in the paper records. We will also discover which family trees are related.

We encourage male PASKs to take the 37 marker Y DNA test. It will tell you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and back in time. To achieve maximum benefits only two male PASKs from each family tree detailed on the Charts list is required.

We will be publishing the latest results of the DNA testing at the Pask Family Gathering in July 2008.

DNA Kit Arrived

Stuart's DNA kit arrived in the post this morning. He has to take three samples over a period of 9-12 hours. Unfortunately he had just had his lunch, so he has to wait at least one hour before starting the process.

Hope to send it back tomorrow.

DNA Project - Special Project Price

I received good news from Susan Meates, the Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) DNA project coordinator. I should have received the project price for the DNA tests - not $259 as originally believed, but $189. A substantial saving.

She is assisting us with setting up a project, hopefully today. Once that is done, the new price will become effective. Any keen DNA testers, should hold off for a few days. So watch this space!

If you have already purchased one - I understand that one person has. Then contact us, and we will arrange for a refund of the difference.

DNA Project Started

As part of the preparations for next July's family gathering, we have started a DNA project, with Family Tree DNA, the pioneer and the world's largest DNA company in the new field of genetic genealogy.

Two kits have so far been purchased for:

1. Stuart Charles Pask, representing the Pasks of Great Gonerby - Black-Icon Family Tree (Chart 1)


2. John Henry Pask from Aldershot, representing the Pasks of Fulbeck: Turquoise-Icon Family Tree (Chart 22)

We have known John since 1982, and it is about time we proved we are related. We are also very keen for others to test who represent the Pask families from Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Monmouthshire, and Essex. The DNA test will help us identify whether these lines are connected, even though we do not have the documental evidence to prove it.

The Paternal DNA, passed from father to son, tests the Y-chromosome, which is only found in males and is useful in verifying common ancestry. The DNA test will be the very extensive 37 marker paternal test. A perfect match of 37 markers means that the two individuals matching shared a common ancestor in recent times.

It will also provide us with more information, like deep ancestral origins, matches with other individuals that share the same results, our recent ethnic origins, and FTDNATiP - the Time Predictor to the Most Recent Common Ancestor between the test takers.

The Family Tree DNA test kit consists of three cheek scrapers and three collection tubes--designed for a single persons use.

This is truly an exciting milestone in the Pask, Paske One-Name Study and our 27 years of research.

Descendants of James Pask from Wickhambrook Suffolk

This information relates to Chart 31, the descendants of James Pask, (1797-1865), who was born in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

James Pask was born in 1797 in Wickhambrook. After extensive analysis, it has been determined that all other Wickhambrook Pasks are related to John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. James is likely to be the son of Thomas Pask, who died in Wickhambrook in 1815, at the age of 62. However, currently no marriage or other references to Thomas has been found. This is purely assumptive, and of course requires additional research.

Chart 31 will be merged with Chart 2 [green-icon] in the next website update.

Website Update 21 October 2007

The website was updated today Sunday 21 October. This update is slightly different to previous. There are many changes, mainly in preparation for the next publication - Pasks of Wickhambrook Suffolk. This book will cover the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. We hope to have the first draft ready for when we visit Suffolk during early November.

Back from Vacation

Our regular bloggers will have noticed that there has been no blogs for the past three weeks. We have just come back from a 3-week cruise on the Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2).

We went from Southampton to Quebec, Halifax, Bar Harbour, Boston, and New York. Unfortunately the weather was not kind and we had a very rough crossing in the Atlantic both ways. We also experienced severe fog in Boston, and New York. We had to miss Rhode Island because the fog made it unsuitable to tender. On the way back we had to miss St. Johns, Newfoundland because of high winds and rough seas. Strangely enough on the last two days we had seas as smooth as a millpond.

Nevertheless, we did not let the weather spoil our enjoyment, or relaxation. The ship, food, ambiance, and staff were as usual excellent. The ship is like going home and we are made so welcome. We also met again some "old" friends, and made some new. Special thanks to Trish and Alan Foley, who were on our table. We look forward to continuing our friendship. Trish shares a common interest - need you ask - family history. We spent many an hour discussing family history and sources now available.

Of course during the trip, the One-Name Study was not neglected. A website update is imminent. Our focus this trip was the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. A substantial number of lines have been updated, in preparation for the next Pask publication. All the ground work /research has been completed. Now it is just a case of formatting and compiling the book. We hope to have the first draft ready for when we visit Suffolk during early November.

Stephen & Millie Cocksedge née Pask

This information relates to Chart 7, the descendants of Henry Paske, (1765 - 1845), who lived in Kedington, Suffolk.

Jane King of Peterborough contacted us by letter. She is the great-granddaughter of Millie Pask who married Stephen Cocksedge on 28 March 1886 in All Saints, West Ham, Essex.

Millie was born on 14 March 1867 in Kedington, and was the great-granddaughter of Henry & Frances Pask née Wallaker.

In the 1881 census Millie was the servant of Stephen Cocksedge. After the death of his first wife Mary Ann, Millie became his wife.

Jane plans to research the Kedington branch. Hopefully she will be able to find the missing link that shows a connection between Chart 7 and Chart 6 (Khaki-Icon) - the main progenitor Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, who also lived in Kedington in the 1700s.

Jane is planning to attend the Pask Family Gathering on July 26 2008.

Ellen Levy (alias Villiers)

This information relates to Chart 39, the descendants of Thomas Pask, (1766 - b1851), who lived in St. Pancras.

This morning we received a very interesting e-mail from William de Villiers, who lives in South Africa, about Ellen Levy (alias) Villiers. Coincidental, she was the mother of James Morton Pask - See the previous blog John Morton Pask - Ashantee Medal for Sale.

William saw a reference to Ellen Levy (alias Villiers) on our website, and it fired his imagination and plunged him into hours of work at his computer keyboard researching Ellen's father. He found:

Isaac LEVY (alias Isaac VILLIERS or John VILLIERS) was born in about 1788. He was married [date unknown] to Mary COLLIER (who was born in Hornsey, Middlesex in about 1789).

Isaac ran into financial difficulties in the 1820’s and was sued and committed for debt – being described in the legal documents as Isaac Levy “(commonly called Isaac Villiers, sued and committed as Isaac Villiers), late of Golden-Square, Middlesex, afterwards of Sackville-Place, Lambeth, Surrey (carrying on business in Partnership with William Court, as Tailors, under the firm of Villiers and Court), then of Glbson-Street, Waterloo-Road, Surrey, then of Isabella-Street, Waterloo-Road aforesaid, then of New-Street, Waterloo-Road aforesaid, Comedian, and carrying on business, on his separate account, as a Tailor”.

When the national census was taken in June 1841 he was described as “Isaac Villiers”, a tailor, living in Arlington Street in London with his wife, five children and two sempstresses.

When the census was taken again in April 1861 he was described as “John Villiers”, a 73 year old tailor, living at No. 25, Clarence Street, Islington St Mary in London with his wife and eldest daughter.

He died in 1863.

In addition, William has provided very detailed information - with sources. This information will be included in the next website update, that is imminent.

We were also very intrigued by the change of name. Now thanks to William, the mystery is solved.

James Morton Pask - Ashantee Medal for Sale

This information relates to Chart 39, the descendants of Thomas Pask, (1766 - b1851), who lived in St. Pancras.

Martin Brady contacted us yesterday. He is not related, however very interested in military history.

Earlier this year, we researched James Morton Pask, after receiving information from David Noden from the Department of Africa, Oceania and Americas in the British Museum - see blog titled James Morton Pask (1848 - 1930) - British Museum. You can imagine our delight when Martin Brady provided us with some very interesting information on a medal that belonged to James.

Martin advised that JM Pask’s Ashantee medal was currently for sale on the website J Collins Medals Limited. A picture, and description reads:

Ashantee 1873-4 (J M Pask, BA, Navl Instr, RN, HMS Druid, 73-74) James Morton Pask was appointed Naval Instructor, Royal Navy 28 March 1872 he joined HMS Druid the same day. Mr Pask retired from the Royal Navy 30 March 1900 after 28 years service, this is his only medal.

Unfortuntely the cost of £450 prohibits us purchasing it. However if anyone is interested they should contact J Collins Medals Limited.

James Morton Pask was born on 24 February 1848. He was the son of James & Ellen Pask née Villiers or Levy.

Sincere thanks to Martin for providing this information. In 2005, he kindly provided photographs of John & Agnes Pask's Grave in Southend-on-Sea Cemetery. John Pask was born in 1838 in Thundersley, Essex. He was the son of James Horton & Julia Pask née Asplin, and was an Able Seaman (AB) on HMS Agamemnon in the Crimea war.

This information relates to the yellow-icon tree - descendants of John Paske c1600, who lived in Cambridgeshire - his son John married Mary Goldsborow.

I received some very timely information from Jo Pask today, she found a snippet of information in the East Anglian Times edition 1944:

Miss Helen Paske of Wanstead on November 14th 1944 celebrated her 104th Birthday. She was born at Creeting St Peter Rectory, daughter of the Rev. Edward Paske.

I am currently researching this family. Helen's brothers served in India.

PASKEs of India

This information relates to the yellow-icon tree - descendants of John Paske c1600, who lived in Cambridgeshire - his son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW.

As a follow on from the previous blog on this branch of the PASKEs, Colleen Willis has again come up with some very interesting information. She pointed me to a source not previously searched - the British Library website, in the India Office Records.

It took me several minutes to find what Colleen was referring to. Even knowing it was there, the website was not intuitive. However it was worth persevering. The trick is to search the home page of the British Library for the India Office Records, then look for the sentence

The India Office Family History Search database contains around 300,000 records for British and European people in India between 1600 and 1949.

If you use the search option at the top of the webpage, it just takes you back to the British Library search that has 33 records relating to books written by Paskes, or about Paskes. However using the hyperlink India Office Family History Search, it provides 20 detailed records, providing some births, marriages, and deaths and some biographies. For example for
