Descendants of Henry & Mary Pask née Shaw

This information relates to Chart 6 - Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, born 1739 in Kedington, Suffolk.

Over the weekend we had an e-mail from Helen Freeman, whose husband is a descendant of Henry & Mary Pask née Shaw. Their daughter Elsie Lucy Mary married John Henry Woodward (not John Steer as currently shown on the website).

Helen has provided their marriage certificate, and information from the 1911 census. This will be included in the database and available in the next website update.

Current Activities

To those who regularly look at the Pask website and the blog you may have noticed an absence of updates and blogs. This is two fold:

  1. We are renovating the house at the moment. Building & decorating work is being carried out by Stuart until the end of October.
  2. The project that I have been managing at work for the last 2+ years is just about to go-live. It will be a phased rollout to 60 countries from June to August. So it is an exceptionally busy period.

So unfortunately there are not enough hours in the day. However hopefully normal service will be resumed in the not too distant future.

Elizabeth Pask b1835 Raglan Monmouthshire

This information relates to Chart 34, the descendants of Philip Pask, (1768-1843), who lived in Bryngwyn, Monmouthshire.

Today we had a new inquiry from Ted Broadhurst, who is researching his 3 x great-grandmother Elizabeth Pask who was born in 1835 in Ragland Monmouthshire. She was the daughter of Phillip & Mary Pask née Morgan.

This family was extensively researched previously by Sylvia Rycroft. However there was no information found on Elizabeth.

Ted has informed us that Elizabeth married William Winyard in 1855 in Birmingham. William was a Saddler. They had seven children. Ted has now definitely filled in the gaps, by providing us with 25 pages of detailed information. He also has photographs and certifications.

Descendants of James & Charlotte Mary Pask née Chaffin

This information relates to Chart 6 - Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, born 1739 in Kedington, Suffolk.

Last Friday we received an inquiry from Raymond Pask from Australia. He is researching his great-grandparents James & Charlotte Mary Pask née Chaffin. He writes:

"... one of their sons, Henry James Pask, who migrated to Australia in 1896, is my grandfather. He died in Melbourne in 1931. His parents, James and Charlotte, migrated to Australia in 1907. James died in 1914, while Charlotte died in 1911. All four (incl Henry James' wife, Isabella Smith) are buried together in Brighton Cemetery, Melbourne."
Following up on this lead, I searched the migration records on http://www.findmypast.com/. Although James was not correctly indexed, I found them actually departing from London on 14 April 1899 on the ship Oroya. They travelled together with their son Arthur. Also their daughter Mary Ann, and son-in-law James Walter Dean and their two children George, and Edith Mary Dean.

This solved two mysteries as previously we could not find the family in the 1901 census, and also could not establish who Mary Ann married.

Raymond is curious to find out what happened to two other sons William and James, and their families. He knows that they also emigrated to Australia, however currently cannot establish when it was. There is also a family bible with more names mentioned that aren't on our birth list from James and Charlotte.

This information will be included in the next website update. We look forward to exchanging more information with Ray, and hopefully establish a connection between the Suffolk Pask families in charts 04, and 06.

We believe that this is Betsy Pask who lived in Nettleham, Lincolnshire.

We won't be bidding for the sampler.

Descendants of William & Grace Isabella Pask née Solomon

This information relates to Chart 46: William Pask (1860-1914) born in Southery Lincolnshire #1470.

Chris Bell wrote to us this evening. She is an ardent researcher, but is still looking for the elusive information on the birth/baptism and marriage of her great-grandparents William & Grace Isabella Pask née Solomon.
Chris has provided this picture.
Lucy Annie Sketcher née Pask, Gladys Lampard née Pask, Frank Pask, Ethel Milner née Pask, and Gladys M. Pask, formerly Glover (wife of Frank).
From left to right:
Lucy Annie Sketcher née Pask, Gladys Lampard née Pask, Frank Pask, Ethel Milner née Pask, and Gladys M. Pask, formerly Glover (wife of Frank).
If you recognise any of these people do get in touch. Chris is very keen to find any information on this family.

2009 Guild Publication Awards

This year we entered the Pask, Paske blog, and also the publication PASKs of Lincolnshire Volume I - Great Gonerby into the prestigious Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) Publication Awards. There were a record number of 106 entries, and the standard was exceptionally high.

We are very proud to announce this blog won 1st prize, and the book was highly commended. Needless to say, we are delighted with the results.

Thank you everyone for your contributions to winning these awards - the success of the Pask One-Name Study depends entirely on your contributions.

Website Update 12 April 2009

The website was updated yesterday, Sunday 12 April. This was a comparatively small update, and focuses on information, as detailed in the previous blogs:

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. There are now 7984 narratives available - an increase of 23.

Descendants of Moses John & Cecilia Pask née Morgan

This information relates to a descendant of the Monmouthshire progenitor Isaac Paske, (c1705 - ) who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

During the Easter we have exchanged information with Leslie Pask, who contacted us initially back in 2003. His grandfather was Amos John & Cecilia Pask née Morgan who lived in Pontypridd, Glamorgan.

Searching through our transcripts of the GRO births, marriages, and deaths we have been able to identify his wife Cecilia, their 8 children, 11 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

These have been included in our database, and will be available in the next website update.

Peter Pask - Waterloo

Recently Stephen Pask of Australia was searching military records in Find My Past. He found a Pask who fought at Waterloo:

Private Peter Pask fought in Captain Wood's Light Infantry unit of the 1st Battalion 4th (King's Own) Regiment. This regiment has some ties to Yorkshire but does not necessarily mean this man came from there.

He was awarded the Waterloo Medal which was awarded to all ranks who fought in the battle.
We searched our records, and found 27 Peter Pasks in the database. However, only 1-2 likely. Based on the battle being on 18 June 1815, it could be:

Peter Pask born 1770 in Stoke by Clare, Suffolk - perhaps too old
Peter Pask born 1803 in Flempton cum Hargrave, Suffolk - probably too young
On the other hand it could be neither. Family stories like this would be passed down through the generations. We are in touch with descendants of both of the above families, and they are ardent researchers. They would be aware of this if it was their Peter Pask.

Publishing Your Family History to the Web

Early last year I gave a a half-day tutorial at the Society of Genealogists on Publishing Your Family History to the Web. See blog titled Publishing Your Family History to the Web.

Shortly afterwards I included the PowerPoint presentation on a website that hosts presentations, called www.slideshow.net. It's a free website that enables you to upload and share your PowerPoint presentations and Word documents.

Today they wrote to me and advised:

We've noticed that your slideshow on SlideShare has been getting a LOT of views
in the last 24 hours. Great job ... you must be doing something right. ;-)

Not sure whether this is an April Fool's joke, but the statistics say that 30,000+ people have viewed the presentation in the last 24 hours. For those interested, you can find the presentation on http://www.slideshare.net/TeresaPask/publishing-your-family-history-to-the-web.

Website Update 26 March 2009

The website was updated today, Thursday 26 March. This update focuses on the Lincoln registration district marriages so kindly provided by Marion Harper Hopkins as part of the Guild of One-Name Studies marriage challenge, as detailed in the December blog titled Lincoln Marriages.

All the 55 marriages have now been included in the database. The marriage transcripts from numerous Lincolnshire parish registers are available as downloads in the Sources of Information section of the relevant individual narratives.

We are looking forward to meeting Marion this weekend, as we are attending the Lincolnshire Family History One Day Conference at City School, Skellingthorpe Road, Lincoln. It has been over 20 years since we attended a Lincolnshire conference, and we look forward to renewing old acquaintances.

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. There are now 7961 narratives available.

Susan Pask born 1820 Llanmartin, Monmouthshire

This information relates to a descendant of the Monmouthshire progenitor Isaac Paske, (c1705 - ) who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

Earlier this month Paula Payne, our ardent Monmouthshire researcher wrote to us. Recently she and her brother Peter saw the original Nebo Independant Chapel, Wolvesnewton records and determined that the Pask baptisms were wrongly transcribed.

In particular it was originally believed that Susan was the daughter of Isaac & Mary Pask née Morgan. Paula confirmed that it should read:

Susan the daughter of Isaac Pask and Elizabeth Pask of the Parish of Llanmartin was born in 28th February 1820 and was baptized 29th March 1820 by David Thomas of Nebo Independent Chapel Wolvesnewton.

This has been amended in our database, and be included in the next website update.

John & Mary Hannah Beard née Pask

This information relates to a descendant of the Monmouthshire progenitor Isaac Paske, (c1705 - ) who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

Last month we received a letter from Christine A. Paisley, who lives in Albany, West Australia. She writes that her husband's grandmother was Mary Hannah Pask, the daughter of John & Elizabeth Pask née Crockett. Mary was born on 15 February 1885 at Barbadoes Green, Tintern, Monmouthshire.

Christine has provided details that has enabled us to identify John & Mary's children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and 2 x great-grandchildren. This information will be included in the next website update in Chart 04.

John Joseph Stephen & Julia Wiber née Pask

This information relates to the descendants of the Essex Main Progenitor - John Pask, (1771-1847) who originated from Thundersley, Essex.

Today we received an e-mail from Mandy Bourdon. She writes:

I live in Australia ... my ggg grandmother was a Elizabeth Louisa Wiber daughter of John Joseph Stephen Wiber and Julia Pask but on your website it only states an Emma Wiber.
The reason for only having Emma was because the information came from the passenger list of the "Parsee". If there were other children they must have been born in Australia.

Mandy is going to provide more information. In the meantime, we will include Elizabeth in the next website update.

Toffee Pask (19 July 1994 - 13 March 2009)

Toffee Pask

Our beloved burmese cat Toffee sadly died yesterday. His real name was Rascal Robbie, and he lived up to his name. We had to include numerous bells on his collar to warn all the local birds, mice, squirrels, and even rats. Nothing was too big for him.

He was always with me whilst I worked on family history. Frequently I had to move him off the mouse mat as he got closer and closer. We will sorely miss him.

New Chart 48 - George & Mary Pask née Fitzjohn

This information relates to Chart 48: George Pask who was born in 1818, and baptised in Thorney Cambridgeshire. He married Mary Fitzjohn in 1840, and they lived in Northamptonshire.

A new chart will be available in the next website update - chart 48. This will group together over 40 people who descend from George & Mary Pask née Fitzjohn who lived in Northamptonshire in the middle of the 19th century.

George was the illegitimate son of Sarah Pask. He was born on 12 July 1817, and baptised on 7 June 1818 in Thorney, Cambridgeshire. It is currently not known where Sarah came from.

Barbara Pask Painting

Barbara Pask's paint of a cat Recently I was searching the internet for the name Pask, and came across this delightful painting by Barbara Pask.

Being a cat lover, I thought this was an excellent painting and captured the look of a cat.

So I was delighted when she put it up for sale on e-bay. I snapped it up, and will receive it from Ohio in the next couple of days. It will take pride of place in the lounge.

James Pask b1871 Bury St. Edmunds

This information relates to the main Suffolk tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 who lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

Yesterday we received an e-mail from Geoff & Pam Gough. Fortunately they solved a long outstanding mystery relating to James Pask, the son of John & Susan Pask née Buckle.

We had found James in the 1881 & 1891 censuses, but not in the 1901 census. There was additional confusion as there was two James born in Bury St. Edmunds - James in 1871 and James Henry in 1872.

Fortunately we found him in the 1911 census living in St. Pancras. This in turn, enabled us to locate him in the 1901 census, where he gave his place of birth incorrectly as London. Together with the information provided by Geoff & Pam, we have been able to piece together that he married Katherine Markell in 1893, and they had five children:

  1. Lily Florence Pask born 1894
  2. Gladys Ethel Pask born 1896
  3. Dorothy Maud Pask born 1903 (Pam's grandmother)
  4. Ivy Molly Francis Pask born 1907
  5. Katie Maria Pask born in 1910

James' siblings have been well researched by Dorothy Pask, and David Hodge.

Geoff & Pam will be providing more information in due course. In the meantime, the next website update will include the basic information on this latest find.

John Jabez Daubney Pask

This information relates to the main Lincolnshire tree - descendants of Johannis [John] & Elizabeth Pask née Archer, who lived in Lincolnshire.

This week my brother Kelvin went on a business trip to Alexandria, Egypt. He kindly agreed to visit a war grave there. He took numerous photographs. The cemetery is currently under renovation - they are replacing the grass. The photographs below show other parts of the cemetery, and the Egyptian gardener who lovingly cares for the cemetery. There are several other photographs available in the John Jabez Daubney Pask album, available in Picasa web albums.

J.J.D. Pask, was John Jabez Daubney Pask. He was born in 1879 in North Kyme, Lincolnshire, the son of Edward & Jane Pask née Daubney. He married Sarah Elizabeth Gash on 1 November 1906. They had five children. John was killed in action on 1 November 1917. Information on this family was originally provided in 2004 by Joanne Kirby.

Descendants of Henry & Elizabeth Pask née Asman

This information relates to the main Lincolnshire tree - descendants of Johannis [John] & Elizabeth Pask née Archer, who lived in Lincolnshire.

Yesterday I contacted Becky Pask, through Facebook. I don't really use Facebook, however back in June last year I was notified about the 200 Global Pask Challenge. I was browsing through the list of people who took part in the challenge, and came across Becky's name.

Becky lives in New York state. She was delighted I contacted her, and sent me a link to the Pask Family Web Home. This family had a family reunion on July 27 2008, by sheer coincidence a day after the Pask Family Gathering.

Becky and I intend to exchange information, and bring up-to-date the information on the descendants of Henry & Elizabeth Pask née Asman, who emigrated to America on RMS Abyssinia, arriving 22 April 1872. Henry was born in 1849 in Nocton, Lincolnshire.

George & Maria Simpson née Pask

This information relates to Chart 44: William PASK married Elizabeth c1814, and lived in Timberland, Lincolnshire.

Yesterday Marion Harper Hopkins, an ardent family history researcher, provided us with a transcript of the marriage of George Simpson to Maria Pask. They married in St. Michael's in Louth, Lincolnshire on 30 July 1899.

Marion is a fellow Guild of One-Name Studies member. She has been researching since 1989, and has one-name studies for the names HOPKIN(S), CRAMP(E) and BRAML(E)Y, and their variants. Marion and her husband Mick, frequently undertake marriage challenges. Last December they provided 55 Pask marriage transcripts from the Lincoln registration district (see Blog titled Lincoln Marriages), and previously they did a Lambeth marriage challenge (see Blog titled Lambeth Marriages). We are indebted for their contributions, and amazed at their energy and committment. Although not related to any Pasks, they have volunteered to take part in the next Pask Family Gathering on 3 July 2010.

This marriage and additional information on George & Maria Simpson née Pask will be included in the next website update.

Pask, Paske & Pasque births (1916-2005)

As a follow-on from the recent blog titled England & Wales Births 1911-2005. The dates should read 1915-2005.

A quick search reveals that there are in the period 1916-2005

2,107 births, with the mother’s maiden name of PASK

283 births, with the mother’s maiden name of PASKE

41 births, with the mother’s maiden name of PASQUE

26 births, with the mother's maiden name of PARSK

this compares with

2,228 with the name of PASK

247 with the name of PASKE

67 with the name of PASQUE

29 with the name of PARSK

We are finding that there are a lot of names incorrectly listed as PACK, PARK, and PASH. These are incorrect in the original GRO indexes. We have not so far found a lot of incorrect transcripts of the indexes.

England & Wales Births 1911-2005

We are in for a very busy period!

Ancestry has just released their index of England & Wales births for the period 1911-2005. This database is a searchable, digitized version of the indices of civil registrations in England and Wales, reported quarterly to the General Register Office (GRO) in London. This index spans the years between 1916 and 2005.

You can search for a christian name, surname, year, or even mother's maiden name. This will revolutionize family history! When I think of the hours spent transcribing the births, marriages, and deaths. Now it is all done for you.

Yorkshire PASKs - William Edward & Mary Pask née Cliffe

This information relates to the main Lincolnshire tree - descendants of Johannis [John] & Elizabeth Pask née Archer, who lived in Lincolnshire.

As mentioned in the previous blog, we found two Pask families in the 1911 Census in Sheffield. The second one was the family of William Edward & Mary Pask née Cliffe together with three of their children, who were living at 3 Greystock Street, Sheffield.

William was born in 1871 in Nocton, Lincolnshire. He was the 7th great-grandson of John & Elizabeth Pask née Archer, the main Lincolnshire progenitor.

We have been able to trace William & Mary's descendants through to Sophie Louise Orr, the daughter of Nicola & Nigel Orr née Pask. Sophie is the 11 x great-granddaughter of John & Elizabeth Pask née Archer.

We are sure you would agree that this is pretty impressive tree going back to the 1540s and spans 13 generations. All the credit goes to the many researchers of this tree, in particular Patricia Chown, and Tom & Claudia DuBois.

This information will be included in the next website update.

Yorkshire PASKs - Charles William & Ada Pask née Bee

This information relates to the main Suffolk tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 who lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

We recently found in the 1911 Census, two Pask families in Yorkshire. One of them was the family of Charles William & Ada Pask née Bee, who married in 1903 in the Sheffield registration district. In the census of 2 April 1911 they were living at 5 Ross Street, Darnall, Sheffield, together with their children Charles, Ada, and Nellie.

Charles was born in Deepcar. His parents were George & Elizabeth Pask, who originated from Suffolk. George was born in Depden in 1858.

We have been able to piece together the family from the 1880s through to current day. Information on Charles & Ada, together with their six children, and their 27 known descendants will be included in the next website update.

Edna Coulson Pask (1920-1934)

This information relates to a currently unidentified main branch of the family with roots in Nottinghamshire.

We had an e-mail via Genes Reunited from Margaret, who is researching Edna Coulson Pask. Margaret writes:

... My grandfather, who was in the army was asked by a dying colleague to care for his daughter after his death. As a consequence Edna was brought to live in the family with my grandparents and their three children, my mother and her two younger brothers. The youngest brother can remember Edna ..... Ron says they nicknamed her Dolly and she died in 1934 from a virus. I have found an Edna Coulson Pask born in Derbyshire and her mother's name was Pask. Presumably the father's name was Coulson. Do you know anything about this family please?

As Margaret mentions, Edna C. Pask was registered in 1920 in the Basford registration district. She died in 1934 in the Leicester registration district, at the age of 13.

We will purchase the birth certificate so that we can identify who her mother was.

Website Update 1 February 2009

The website was updated today, Sunday 1 February. This update includes information, as detailed in the previous blogs:

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. There are now 7,867 narratives available.

Frederick & Georgina Esther Pask née Burnard

This information relates to Chart 7, the descendants of Henry Paske, (1765 - 1845), who lived in Kedington, Suffolk.

We have also been researching Frederick & Georgina Esther Pask née Burnard, who was the great-grandson of Henry Pask.

Just before Christmas the 1911 census came out. We purchased all the London census images for the names Pask, and Paske as more and more families were migrating away from the agricultural areas of Lincolnshire & Suffolk. Our main focus was to assign the 400 children born between 1901 and 1911, into family groups. One such family was the family of Frederick & Georgina Esther Pask née Burnard.

We knew they married in 1901, however we could not locate Frederick in the 1901 census. However we believed they had several children, as in the GRO birth indexes there were five children, with the mother's maiden name of Burnard. Fortunately we found the family in the 1911 census and established that they had 11 children in total.

Also we could determine Frederick's age, and where he was born. Subsequently we found him in the 1901 census, indexed under the name of Peck. Although he was born in Deptford, his parents were Charles & Harriett Pask née Surridge. His father Charles was born in 1839 in Kedington, Suffolk.

Frederick & Georgina's eleven children have now been included in the database, together with a further generations, where determined.

This information is included in today's website update.

George William & Elizabeth Martha Pask née Butler

This information relates to Chart 7, the descendants of Henry Paske, (1765 - 1845), who lived in Kedington, Suffolk.

In late December we received an e-mail from Janice (Jan) Ellam, who lives in Balsham Cambridgeshire. She wrote that she was the granddaughter of George William & Elizabeth Martha Pask née Butler. Since then together with Jan we have been gathering information on this family.

George & Elizabeth's eldest son was Sidney was previously detailed in the blog titled Sidney George Pask.

Jan wrote:

After WWII, Sidney stayed in Ostend where he married a Flemish girl called Madelaine. On her death in the mid sixties he returned to England.
Today, Sidney's descendants still reside in Belgium. On Friday, Bernard, Sidney's grandson contact us, and will provide more information on his family.

The information from Jan will be included in today's website update.

Update on Descendants of John & Anne Pask née Thomas

This information relates to Chart 45: William PASK (1808-1893) born in Nantylgo, Monmouthshire #9973.

Further to the recent posting Descendants of John & Anne Pask née Thomas, David Hopkins wrote to us. He said:

Your last blog on Pask.org.uk is most interesting. John's father is listed as James Pask. This could be the same James who was the father of William Pask b Nantylo Aberustruth 1808. William had a daughter Anne and I believe Elvira.
I think that this probably the missing link. We will investigate further this James, and his wife Mary, and their son William and see if there is further evidence to verify this.

William's daughter was infact called Levinia, or Lavinia, however in the 1851 census she was known as Evenia.

Thanks for David for this information. Just goes to show the power of the blog!

Descendants of John & Anne Pask née Thomas

This information relates to a currently unidentified main branch of the family with roots in Monmouthshire.

Recently we have been corresponding with John Powell, who is the descendant of John & Anne Pask née Thomas of Aberystruth, Monmouthshire.

John has provided a birth, and marriage certificate of their daughter Elvira who was born on 7 November 1845 in Ebbw Vale, Aberystruth Monmouthshire. Elvira married William Thomas on 17 November 1866 in Sharon Chapel, Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire.

In addition John provided the marriage certificate of John & Anne, who married on 7 June 1840 in The Parish Church, Aberystruth. His father was listed as James Pask, a Paper-Maker. This is an usual occupation, and we have not come across a Pask in this occupation.

Although we have extensively searched the censuses, and baptisms in this area, we cannot find James. If anyone can help on this, am I sure that John will really appreciate it. We all hate mysteries, and brickwalls.

The information that John has provided, together with the certificates, will be available in the next website update.

William Pask born c1860 in Southery Lincolnshire

This information relates to Chart 46: William Pask (1860-1914) born in Southery Lincolnshire #1470.

As detailed in several previous blogs, Chris Bell is researching her great-grandparents William & Grace Isabella Pask née Solomon. Fortunately the recent release of the 1911 census has finally resolved whether William was born in Southery Lincolnshire, or Southery Norfolk. The 1911 Census shows him as born in 1860 in Southery Lincolnshire. The website will be updated in the next release.

Southery, also known as Southrow is a hamlet near Bardney. This will enable Chris to focus her research in this area. Unfortunately his baptism, and his marriage to Grace still remains elusive.

There was a William Pask born in 1862 in Bardney, but this is not him, as this William lived, and died in the Chorlton on Medlock registration district, where he married Elizabeth Cookson, and then after her death, Elizabeth's sister Emma Cookson.

John Bensley Gresham Page Paske

This relates to the descendants of John Pask whose son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW and they lived in Stragwell, Suffolk.

As a follow-on to the recent blog on Henry Gresham Paske. Pam Mercier wrote to us about Henry's uncle, John Bensley Gresham Page Paske.

Pam writes:

I am researching the Gresham name and have noted that several Paske men bear that name as part of the forenames.

It has been my experience that usually having a surname as part of your forename indicates a marriage of a Gresham woman into that line.

The first I can find is John Bensley Gresham Page Paske 1791 Barking Suffolk, he married according to the IGI and East India co records to a Harriet Newman and had one daughter Harriet Bensley Gresham Paske who died in 1837 a few months after giving birth to a son from her marriage to Francis Henry Crozier( 1836 Madras) the son was called Gresham Paske Rawson Crozier b1837 Madras d1870 Wandsworth. Gresham married Laura Kew in 1859 in South Kensington and had three children:
Walter Gresham Crozier 1860-1871
Montague Liston Paske Crozier 1868 1909 unmarried
Margaret Hester Crozier 1869

We agree entirely with Pam, we also believe that these are mother's maiden names passed through the generations. Unfortunately we are not sure which mother, or mothers had these names.

This information will be included in a subsequent website update.

1911 Census Now Available

They have now released the 1911 Census.

It is available http://fmpbsol.1911census.co.uk, also on www.findmypast.com. Unfortunately it is a pay-to-view website, you have to buy credits to view the transcripts, or original pages. This is not yet part of the subscription package of www.findmypast.com – it is expected to be another 6 months before it will be included in the annual subscriptions.

The good news in the meantime is that the index is free, and you can work the family groups out, if you can narrow them down.

We have already compiled an index of Pask & Paskes for the initial 22 counties, and purchased the images for London, Middlesex, Staffordshire, and Gloucestershire.
Today they released many more counties.

There is a full list of the counties available. All the latest information is available in the 1911census.co.uk blog.

If you decide to buy any Pask images, we would welcome a copy. We have all the images for London, Staffordshire, and Bristol.

Lincoln Marriages

Yesterday I received 55 (yes - fifty five) marriage transcripts from the Lincoln Registration District from Marion Harper Hopkins of the Guild of One-Name Studies.

They are as a result of the Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) Marriage Challenge. The Marriage Challenge is a Guild Project in which volunteers (Challengers) search for marriage entries in the deposited Parish Registers for a particular Registration District (RD) for the period 1837 to 1911.

Of the 55 marriages, two marriages were not listed in the GRO indexes:

  • 1858/Q3 PASK, Joseph Lincoln 7a 729 = PASK, Elizabeth on 20 July 1858 at St. John the Evangelist, Washingborough. This is listed under the name of PARK in the GRO Indexes.
  • 1860/Q2 PASK, Elizabeth = BUTTERY, John Lincoln 7a 883 on 31 March 1860 at St. Lawrence, Bardney. This is listed in the GRO Indexes under the names of BUTREY & PESK.
Copies of the marriage transcripts, and subsequently identified information will be included in the database and the website in the near future.

Sincerest thanks to Marion for her superb efforts. We are indebted to her for her committment to this project. The Pask, Paske One-Name Study has benefited substantially.

Website Updates

You may have noticed that there has not been any website updates for sometime. I have had a technically challenging couple of months!

Not only has the website been plagued with a problem with malware (see the previous blog), but I have had major problems with my hardware.

I use a desktop when working at home, and a laptop when travelling. Unfortunately in October my desktop went wrong, after several previous malfunctions I decided it was time to have a new desktop. So after coming back from the pentiultimate cruise on the QE2, I purchased a new latest technology high specification desktop. This meant I would be using Windows Vista with a 64-bit processor. I tried to install all the software I use for family history, however experienced several problems due to the 64-bit processor. This includes the software used to update the website. I perservered with this time-consuming task. When I was almost finished, the desktop developed a major fault and had to be returned to the manufacturer.

Whilst I have been waiting for the repair to the desktop I have been using my laptop. On Thursday evening I switched on my laptop only to find the harddisk has gone wrong.

Fortunately most of the information is backed up and retrievable. However, if I have been slow responding to you, I trust you understand. Hopefully normal service will be resumed shortly.

Pask Website - Malware on Website

Over the past couple of weeks the Pask, Paske One-Name Study website has been attacked by an "antivirus 2009" alert that has spread wide over the Internet. This rogue anti-virus software installs malware on the website that redirects to other sites for the download of this same rogue anti-virus software.

In non-technical jargon it was a scam to convince the person looking at the website that they had a virus attack, and that they should purchase the software to overcome this.

There was no risk to your computer, it was not a virus. There is no need for you to do anything. However if you are concerned, you can download one of the programs created specifically for "antivirus 2009" removal and scan your computer with it. One of such programs is available at: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/uninstall-antivirus-2009

This issue has now been resolved, and you should not have any problems accessing the website.

Many thanks to all those who notified me about this.

Newspaper Advertisment - 13 March 1813

Newspaper advertisement from The Ipwich Journal, 13 March 1813 This information relates to the main Suffolk tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 who lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

Today I was searching the Gales Digital Collection, and found a newspaper advertisement from The Ipwich Journal, 13 March 1813.

William Pask, son of Stephen Pask, farmer, of Wickhambrook, had the misfortune to be seized with a rheumatic fever in 1806, which continued a very considerable time. Soon after his recovery he was attacked by a violent pain on the fore finger of the left hand, which increased daily, and become intolerable, till, at length, the tumour broke, and a copious discharge ensued. In this state it was, when the surgeon, or whoever it might be, though proper to cut off the finger, which he very judiciously did; and the stump exhibited a very favourable appearance, soon healed, and became perfectly well. But the enemy still lurked within. No sooner was the left finger healed, that he was attacked, in a similar manner, not only on the forefinger of the right hand, but also on the neck, the arm, and the thigh. In this wretched condition he applied, some time since, to JNo. KENT. His wounds were all open, and discharged much; he had a bad cough, and his constitution was much impaired. From the use of KENT'S BOTANICAL MEDICINES and APPLICATIONS, he soon found relief; his consitution gradually mended; he still resides at Wickhambrook, and is highly satisfied with the benefit he has already received.

This reminds me of an episode from Lark Rise to Candleford.

Mary Pask née Light

Mary Pask née Light This information relates to a descendant of the Monmouthshire progenitor Isaac Paske, (c1705 - ) who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

Pat Maybrey has been researching her husband's family for some time. Her husband is the grandson of John & Frances Maybrey née Pask. She recently wrote:

I am attaching a photo which I believe is the wife of Morgan Pask. I was told that it was "Hollister's grandmother" which of course gives me the choice of 2.
I have been pondering this for some time and have come to the conclusion that she is Mary Light on the grounds that I have no records or photographs at all of the older Maybreys whereas the photo of the Pask daughters, Charlotte & Ellen, shows that they were familiar with studio photographers like this one. So I think that the lady is likely to be their mother.

Mary Pask née Light married Morgan Pask on 22 October 1864 at Newchurch Parish Church. They had six children, including Charlotte & Ellen.
