Descendants of John Thomas Pask of Newark

This information relates to Chart 18, Joseph PASK, (1761 - 1831) Caythorpe, Lincolnshire.

Last night we received an e-mail from Linda, who is researching John Thomas Pask of Newark, who was the 2 x grandson of the progenitor Joseph Pask who originated from Caythorpe.

Linda's mother (who was a Pask), is willing to arrange for one of her brothers to take part in the DNA project. This is excellent news, as it will be very interesting to see if this Lincolnshire branch has connections to the other branches currently being tested.

Linda's mother and her uncle are also keen to attend the Pask Family Gathering on 26 July 2008.

In the meantime, we look forward to hearing from Linda again, and updating this tree with the missing descendants.

Herbert Bunt

This information relates to Chart 29, the descendants of Thomas Pasque of Theberton Suffolk.

Herbert Bunt telephoned tonight. It is always good to hear from him. His enthusiam is such an inspiration. As detailed in previous blogs, last year Herbert featured in the BBC programme "Found" with Kate Adie. He is tracing his Pasque ancestors, who originated from Blyburgh in Suffolk.

I am trying to put pressure on him to come to the Pask Family Gathering in July 2008.

Pask Family Gathering 2008 - Update

Last weekend we visited Jo Pask, who is assisting us with the coordination of the Pask Family Gathering in Whepstead, Suffolk in July 2008.

Jo arranged for us to visit the village hall at Whepstead. We are truly delighted with the hall. It has excellent facilities, including the adjacent cricket and playing fields that can be used for the caravans and campers who are attending the Family Gathering. Additionally, set off the main road, there is parking facilities for 60-70 cars. The hall has a large, very well equipped kitchen, and bar, and meets our requirements superbly.

Additionally, during the weekend we were invited to an sumptuous dinner with Judy, who has very kindly volunteered to provide the BBQ for the evening event.

The remainder of the weekend was spent scanning over 100 photographs from Jo's family albums. These will be included in the new book Pasks of Wickhambrook, Suffolk. We are currently putting the final touches to the book and hope to have it released next week.

Sampler in Memory of Margret Herd

Sampler in Memory of Margret Herd who died August 27, 1871 This information relates to the blue-icon tree - descendants of Johannis [John] & Elizabeth Pask née Archer, who lived in Lincolnshire.

Yesterday evening I received a delightful e-mail from Alicja Fraser of Lincolnshire. She wrote:

I found the attached Sampler up in the attic of my home, several years ago. I came across it again today when tidying up and thought I would Google it and found the website about the Pask family and your email address. I wonder whether the sampler refers to your family tree. If so would you like it or is there a Herd family member that might like it?

I established that Margret [or Margaret] Herd was the mother of Elizabeth Pask née Herd, who was born in Heighington in 1829. Elizabeth married Michael Pask on 25 May 1853 in Washingborough. Elizabeth & Michael had seven children, including Sarah Ann Pask, who married Charles Willey, an ancestor of Andrew Willey, a researcher who contacted us in 2005, and provided a wealth of information on this family.

We will be contacting Andrew today, as Alicja is happy to pass on the sampler to his family.

William Alfred & Anna Sarah Pask née Rowe

William Alfred & Anna Sarah Pask née Rowe - Cromer 17 May 1937

This information relates to the khaki-icon tree - descendants of Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, born 1739 in Kedington, Suffolk.

Last month Judith Crust contacted us about William & Alice Maria Bartram née Pask. Judith wrote:

I recently discovered that my Great Grandfather's brother William Bartram married Alice and that she was a Pask. Although she is not a direct relative I have being doing a bit of research into her family. My mother was writing to Alice and I have letters from her dating 1954, so finding she died in 1955 explains why the letters stopped. ... My Great Grandfather Francis Bartram went back to England in 1936/37 (he came out to Australia to live ) and I have photos with the name of Mr and Mrs Pask written on the back.
Today, Judith has conquered her new scanner, and provided the first of several photographs. This first photograph written on the back is Mr and Mrs Pask 17.05.37 at Cromer. Mr & Mrs Pask were William Alfred & Anna Sarah Pask née Rowe.

This would coincide with the jubilee of King George VI's coronation on 12 May 1937. Only last week, when shopping at the nearby Brooklands M & S, we saw a similar car in the car park, and took a long time admiring it.
Since thanks to Judith for her perservance with the scanner, it was well worth her efforts.

Descendants of William & Caroline Amelia Paske née Budding

This information relates to Chart 4, the descendants of William Paske, (1768 - 1855) from Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire.

Sylvia Rycroft has contacted us. She writes:

I am a direct descendant of William Paske and Caroline Amelia Budding (Usk, Mon) and have been researching my family tree for some years. My grandmother was Isabella Agatha Paske, daughter of Charles Paske and Adelaide Middleton.

This is particularly good news as we are about to start the preparations for the third book Pasks of Monmouthshire. Hopefully Sylvia can help us tie us some loose ends here, and also provide some valuable photographs. We look forward to exchanging information with Sylvia.

Website Update 17 November 2007

The website was updated today Saturday 17 November. This update includes information as detailed in the previous blogs:

Lambeth Marriages

Descendants of James & Martha Pask née Heath

Descendants of Edward & Ellen Pask née Branham

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed. A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. There are now 6,891 narratives available.

Descendants of Edward & Ellen Pask née Branham

Edward Pask (1854 - 1895) This information relates to Chart 16, the descendants of --?-- Pask, who lived in Hackthorne, Lincolnshire. He was the father of Thomas and William Pask.

Over the past few days we have been in contact with Jacqueline Brown via Genes Reunited. She is researching the descendants of Edward & Ellen Pask née Branham, in particular their daughter Charlotte Pask.

Jacqueline has provided information on the marriage of Charlotte to John William Hair, and their four children. This included Theresa Winifred Brooks née Hair, who was the mother, of Carol Gage née Brooks. Carol kindly provided information on this family in 2006, including photographs of Edward, and his wife Ellen Pask née Branham.

Descendants of James & Martha Pask née Heath

This information relates to Chart 30, the descendants of James Pask, (1835 - ) who lived in the hamlet of Southrow, or Southrey, near Bardney, Lincolnshire.

During the past few days we have been in contact with Bernard Seeling, the great-grandson of James & Martha Pask née Heath. Bernard's mother was Marie (or Maria) Pask, who married Charles Edward Arthur Seeling.

Charles was born in Auckland New Zealand, but lived in Wigan Lancashire, where he played for Wigan Rugby League before transferring to Dewsbury in 1937.

Bernard has provided a wealth of information relating to this family, and this will be included in the next website update.

Lambeth Marriages

Yesterday I received six marriage transcripts from Marion Harper Hopkins of the Guild of One-Name Studies.

They are as a result of the Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) Marriage Challenge. The Marriage Challenge is a Guild Project in which volunteers (Challengers) search for marriage entries in the deposited Parish Registers for a particular Registration District (RD) for the period 1837 to 1911.

These six marriages relate to the Lambeth Registration District, and include:

  • James Pask and Charlotte Mary Chaffin - 24 April 1864
  • Richard Wessell and Eliza Pask - 29 December 1870.
  • Thomas Pask and Harriet Doe - 1 November 1877
  • William Pash and Emma Dimmock - 26 August 1883 (originally indexed under the name of Pask.
  • George Pask and Emily Adams - 9 March 1890
  • John Bailey and Maud Isabella Paske - 12 August 1890

Copies of the marriage transcripts, and subsequently identified information will be included in the next website update.

Sincerest thanks to Marion for her superb efforts, especially as she was working to a very tight deadline as the London Metropolitan Archives is now closed to the public for major internal refurbishment until Monday 21 January 2008.

Pasks of Wickhambrook Suffolk

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

We are very pleased to say that the draft of the book Pasks of Wickhambrook has been sent to the publishers Lulu. Hopefully the book will arrive in time for our forthcoming weekend in Suffolk. This is the second book in the series that we are publishing in preparation for the Pask Family Gathering on July 26, 2008.

The book is currently only a draft, and is not yet released. We need to proof it, and include all the photographs that have so kindly been provided by the researchers in this family. The released version will be available in early December - just in time to order it for Christmas presents!

There are 1000+ people mentioned, and it contains 47 descendancy charts, with the accompanying narratives. Once the photographs are in place, the book will probably be 300 pages, and cost approximately £8.90 (plus postage) in black and white. The book is double the size of the Pasks of Great Gonerby Lincolnshire.

During the compiling of this book we were amazed how many people with the same name (and not common names) married more than one Pask. These include ADAMS, BUCKLE, CURRY, FLACK, FULLER, GOLDSMITH, NEWMAN, ORRISS, PREWER, PRYKE, RAYNER, WILLINGHAM, to name a few.

The beauty of publishing to Lulu is that the update process is extremely easy, and as soon as additions or amendments are included, and the PDF is uploaded, the revised edition is available immediately to all new books ordered. So it is never too late to include that information, anecdote, or photograph.

We are going to have a breather for the next month. However, we plan to start drafting the Pasks of Monmouthshire over the Christmas period.

DNA Tests Completed

Both Stuart & John have completed their DNA tests, and returned the swabs to Family Tree DNA's office in Texas.

The genetic test kit consisted of a cheek scraper and collection tube. The test was a painless cheek scraping. The effect of using the scraper is about the same as brushing your cheek with a soft bristle toothbrush. Two backup scrapers & tubes were included to insure that they have good samples for their lab.

It will now take approximately seven weeks to test the DNA sample, analyze the specimens and compare the results to data in the existing genetic library. So we can expect the results just after Christmas. The results will be entered into Family Tree DNA's secure, private and confidential non-web-based genetic library. A comparison between the specific genetic markers and those of others in the database will then be performed and the results provided.

The Family Tree DNA's primary test attempts to determine if 2 people thought to be unrelated actually had a common ancestor. The test is for genealogy NOT for paternity, alimony or other legal purposes.

There are answers to many of the frequently asked questions available on the Family Tree DNA website. There is also a Genealogy & DNA Forum.

If you are interested in participating in the PASK DNA Project, just send us an e-mail. We are particularly interested in testing two PASK males from each of the family lines, detailed in the Charts webpage. By participating in this project you will enable us to link up many of these charts.

PASK DNA Project Now Set Up

The Pask DNA Project is now set up on the Family Tree DNA website. This will enable us to get the reduced project price of US$ 189 for the 37 marker Y DNA test.

Participating in this DNA Project is an opportunity for us to uncover information not provided in the paper records. We will also discover which family trees are related.

We encourage male PASKs to take the 37 marker Y DNA test. It will tell you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and back in time. To achieve maximum benefits only two male PASKs from each family tree detailed on the Charts list is required.

We will be publishing the latest results of the DNA testing at the Pask Family Gathering in July 2008.

DNA Kit Arrived

Stuart's DNA kit arrived in the post this morning. He has to take three samples over a period of 9-12 hours. Unfortunately he had just had his lunch, so he has to wait at least one hour before starting the process.

Hope to send it back tomorrow.

DNA Project - Special Project Price

I received good news from Susan Meates, the Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) DNA project coordinator. I should have received the project price for the DNA tests - not $259 as originally believed, but $189. A substantial saving.

She is assisting us with setting up a project, hopefully today. Once that is done, the new price will become effective. Any keen DNA testers, should hold off for a few days. So watch this space!

If you have already purchased one - I understand that one person has. Then contact us, and we will arrange for a refund of the difference.

DNA Project Started

As part of the preparations for next July's family gathering, we have started a DNA project, with Family Tree DNA, the pioneer and the world's largest DNA company in the new field of genetic genealogy.

Two kits have so far been purchased for:

  1. Stuart Charles Pask, representing the Pasks of Great Gonerby - Black-Icon Family Tree (Chart 1)

  2. John Henry Pask from Aldershot, representing the Pasks of Fulbeck: Turquoise-Icon Family Tree (Chart 22)

We have known John since 1982, and it is about time we proved we are related. We are also very keen for others to test who represent the Pask families from Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Monmouthshire, and Essex. The DNA test will help us identify whether these lines are connected, even though we do not have the documental evidence to prove it.

The Paternal DNA, passed from father to son, tests the Y-chromosome, which is only found in males and is useful in verifying common ancestry. The DNA test will be the very extensive 37 marker paternal test. A perfect match of 37 markers means that the two individuals matching shared a common ancestor in recent times.

It will also provide us with more information, like deep ancestral origins, matches with other individuals that share the same results, our recent ethnic origins, and FTDNATiP - the Time Predictor to the Most Recent Common Ancestor between the test takers.

The Family Tree DNA test kit consists of three cheek scrapers and three collection tubes--designed for a single persons use.

If you are interested in joining this project do contact us, and we will explain the technicalities, costs, and outcome.

This is truly an exciting milestone in the Pask, Paske One-Name Study and our 27 years of research.

Descendants of James Pask from Wickhambrook Suffolk

This information relates to Chart 31, the descendants of James Pask, (1797-1865), who was born in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

James Pask was born in 1797 in Wickhambrook. After extensive analysis, it has been determined that all other Wickhambrook Pasks are related to John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. James is likely to be the son of Thomas Pask, who died in Wickhambrook in 1815, at the age of 62. However, currently no marriage or other references to Thomas has been found. This is purely assumptive, and of course requires additional research.

Chart 31 will be merged with Chart 2 [green-icon] in the next website update.

Website Update 21 October 2007

The website was updated today Sunday 21 October. This update is slightly different to previous. There are many changes, mainly in preparation for the next publication - Pasks of Wickhambrook Suffolk. This book will cover the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. We hope to have the first draft ready for when we visit Suffolk during early November.

A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. There was a increase of 188 narratives, making a total of 6844 people.

Back from Vacation

Our regular bloggers will have noticed that there has been no blogs for the past three weeks. We have just come back from a 3-week cruise on the Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2).

We went from Southampton to Quebec, Halifax, Bar Harbour, Boston, and New York. Unfortunately the weather was not kind and we had a very rough crossing in the Atlantic both ways. We also experienced severe fog in Boston, and New York. We had to miss Rhode Island because the fog made it unsuitable to tender. On the way back we had to miss St. Johns, Newfoundland because of high winds and rough seas. Strangely enough on the last two days we had seas as smooth as a millpond.

Nevertheless, we did not let the weather spoil our enjoyment, or relaxation. The ship, food, ambiance, and staff were as usual excellent. The ship is like going home and we are made so welcome. We also met again some "old" friends, and made some new. Special thanks to Trish and Alan Foley, who were on our table. We look forward to continuing our friendship. Trish shares a common interest - need you ask - family history. We spent many an hour discussing family history and sources now available.

Of course during the trip, the One-Name Study was not neglected. A website update is imminent. Our focus this trip was the descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow. A substantial number of lines have been updated, in preparation for the next Pask publication. All the ground work /research has been completed. Now it is just a case of formatting and compiling the book. We hope to have the first draft ready for when we visit Suffolk during early November.

Website Update 19 September 2007

The website was updated today Wednesday 19 September. This update includes information as detailed in the previous blogs:

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed. A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. This was a significant increase - an additional 186 narratives , making a total of 6656 people.

Stephen & Millie Cocksedge née Pask

This information relates to Chart 7, the descendants of Henry Paske, (1765 - 1845), who lived in Kedington, Suffolk.

Jane King of Peterborough contacted us by letter. She is the great-granddaughter of Millie Pask who married Stephen Cocksedge on 28 March 1886 in All Saints, West Ham, Essex.

Millie was born on 14 March 1867 in Kedington, and was the great-granddaughter of Henry & Frances Pask née Wallaker.

In the 1881 census Millie was the servant of Stephen Cocksedge. After the death of his first wife Mary Ann, Millie became his wife.

Jane plans to research the Kedington branch. Hopefully she will be able to find the missing link that shows a connection between Chart 7 and Chart 6 (Khaki-Icon) - the main progenitor Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, who also lived in Kedington in the 1700s.

Jane is planning to attend the Pask Family Gathering on July 26 2008.

The information kindly provided by Jane has been included in the database, and will be available in the next website update.

Ellen Levy (alias Villiers)

This information relates to Chart 39, the descendants of Thomas Pask, (1766 - b1851), who lived in St. Pancras.

This morning we received a very interesting e-mail from William de Villiers, who lives in South Africa, about Ellen Levy (alias) Villiers. Coincidental, she was the mother of James Morton Pask - See the previous blog John Morton Pask - Ashantee Medal for Sale.

William saw a reference to Ellen Levy (alias Villiers) on our website, and it fired his imagination and plunged him into hours of work at his computer keyboard researching Ellen's father. He found:

Isaac LEVY (alias Isaac VILLIERS or John VILLIERS) was born in about 1788. He was married [date unknown] to Mary COLLIER (who was born in Hornsey, Middlesex in about 1789).

Isaac ran into financial difficulties in the 1820’s and was sued and committed for debt – being described in the legal documents as Isaac Levy “(commonly called Isaac Villiers, sued and committed as Isaac Villiers), late of Golden-Square, Middlesex, afterwards of Sackville-Place, Lambeth, Surrey (carrying on business in Partnership with William Court, as Tailors, under the firm of Villiers and Court), then of Glbson-Street, Waterloo-Road, Surrey, then of Isabella-Street, Waterloo-Road aforesaid, then of New-Street, Waterloo-Road aforesaid, Comedian, and carrying on business, on his separate account, as a Tailor”.

When the national census was taken in June 1841 he was described as “Isaac Villiers”, a tailor, living in Arlington Street in London with his wife, five children and two sempstresses.

When the census was taken again in April 1861 he was described as “John Villiers”, a 73 year old tailor, living at No. 25, Clarence Street, Islington St Mary in London with his wife and eldest daughter.

He died in 1863.

In addition, William has provided very detailed information - with sources. This information will be included in the next website update, that is imminent.

We were also very intrigued by the change of name. Now thanks to William, the mystery is solved.

James Morton Pask - Ashantee Medal for Sale

This information relates to Chart 39, the descendants of Thomas Pask, (1766 - b1851), who lived in St. Pancras.

Martin Brady contacted us yesterday. He is not related, however very interested in military history.

Earlier this year, we researched James Morton Pask, after receiving information from David Noden from the Department of Africa, Oceania and Americas in the British Museum - see blog titled James Morton Pask (1848 - 1930) - British Museum. You can imagine our delight when Martin Brady provided us with some very interesting information on a medal that belonged to James.

Martin advised that JM Pask’s Ashantee medal was currently for sale on the website J Collins Medals Limited. A picture, and description reads:

Ashantee 1873-4 (J M Pask, BA, Navl Instr, RN, HMS Druid, 73-74) James Morton Pask was appointed Naval Instructor, Royal Navy 28 March 1872 he joined HMS Druid the same day. Mr Pask retired from the Royal Navy 30 March 1900 after 28 years service, this is his only medal.

Unfortuntely the cost of £450 prohibits us purchasing it. However if anyone is interested they should contact J Collins Medals Limited.

James Morton Pask was born on 24 February 1848. He was the son of James & Ellen Pask née Villiers or Levy.

Sincere thanks to Martin for providing this information. In 2005, he kindly provided photographs of John & Agnes Pask's Grave in Southend-on-Sea Cemetery. John Pask was born in 1838 in Thundersley, Essex. He was the son of James Horton & Julia Pask née Asplin, and was an Able Seaman (AB) on HMS Agamemnon in the Crimea war.

Helen Paske aged 104

This information relates to the yellow-icon tree - descendants of John Paske c1600, who lived in Cambridgeshire - his son John married Mary Goldsborow.

I received some very timely information from Jo Pask today, she found a snippet of information in the East Anglian Times edition 1944:

Miss Helen Paske of Wanstead on November 14th 1944 celebrated her 104th Birthday. She was born at Creeting St Peter Rectory, daughter of the Rev. Edward Paske.

I am currently researching this family. Helen's brothers served in India.

Thank you Jo, this information will be included in the next website update.

PASKEs of India

This information relates to the yellow-icon tree - descendants of John Paske c1600, who lived in Cambridgeshire - his son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW.

As a follow on from the previous blog on this branch of the PASKEs, Colleen Willis has again come up with some very interesting information. She pointed me to a source not previously searched - the British Library website, in the India Office Records.

It took me several minutes to find what Colleen was referring to. Even knowing it was there, the website was not intuitive. However it was worth persevering. The trick is to search the home page of the British Library for the India Office Records, then look for the sentence

The India Office Family History Search database contains around 300,000 records for British and European people in India between 1600 and 1949.

If you use the search option at the top of the webpage, it just takes you back to the British Library search that has 33 records relating to books written by Paskes, or about Paskes. However using the hyperlink India Office Family History Search, it provides 20 detailed records, providing some births, marriages, and deaths and some biographies. For example for

Thomas Theophilus PASKE
Madras Army; bap 9 Oct 1789, Barking, Suffolk, s
of George & Ann L/MIL/9/112 f.351; retired 15 Oct 1838 d 20 Feb 1860 -
Memorial inscription, Lansdown Cemetery, Bath; m Susan Amelia 1821 (b 1801);

b 1828; Edward b 1829; Charles b 1830; Fanny b 21 Mar 1832, d 11 Oct

Sincere thanks to Colleen - this was a great find.

Descendants of John & Caroline Pask née Darby

This information relates to a currently unidentified main branch of the family with roots in Monmouthshire.

Paula Payne, our main Monmouthshire researcher has found a very interesting document containing the photograph of Elizabeth Pask taken in 1871 when she was 13 years old.

Unfortunately it was taken in Usk Prison. Elizabeth at the time was a servant, and found guilty of stealing from her master. She was sentenced to 4 weeks' hard labour and liberated on October 19, 1871.

Elizabeth's prison record provides a full description, misdemeanor, including the photograph on page 1. On page 2, her liberated date.

There was only one Elizabeth born in 1858, and her parents were John & Caroline Pask née Darby. Initially, this seemed very unlikely as in the 1851 census, and 1861 censuses, John was a Farmer of 100+ acres. I researched the family through the years, and it appears that something must have happened between the 1861 and 1871 censuses, as in 1871 the family had moved to Merthyr Tydfil, and John was a Shepherd, living with his wife Caroline, and sons John & William.

Elizabeth, and her sister Caroline were in service to a Mr Stuckey, a Spirit Merchant, at 7 Courtland Terrace, Merthyr Tydfil.

An Elizabeth Pask married in 1878 in the Merthyr Tydfil registration district. A cross match gave either a Richard Davies, or George Roberts. Unfortunately I cannot locate either Elizabeth or Caroline in subsequent censuses.

Details of this family are not currently on the website, however this, and the additional researched information will be available in the next website update.

Many thanks to Paula for providing the documents. I have often seen the early prisoner photographs, and have been quite envious of the photographs and information available.

Kenneth Richard Pask of Ohio

This information relates to Chart 32, the descendants of Joseph PASK, (1773 - ) who lived in Lincolnshire, and immigrated to Richland County, Ohio USA ,

Amanda Sue Pask, the daughter of Kenneth Richard Pask wrote to us today. She lives in Butler, DeKalb County, Indiana, USA. She has two sons Spencer and Wyatt.

Kenneth was the 3 x great-grandson of Joseph Pask who was born in 1773, and married Anne Bavin in Wellingore in Lincolnshire. After his wife Anne died in 1819, Joseph immigrated to Richland County, Ohio, America with his two sons George & Thomas. His daughter Mary joined them later.

The information Amanda has provided will be available in the next website update.
Unfortunately although I responded to Amanda, her e-mail has bounced back as her inbox is overquota (full). I will resend it, and hope that it does not bounce next time.

Paskeville, Australia

This information relates to the yellow-icon tree - descendants of John Paske c1600, who lived in Cambridgeshire - his son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW.

Colleen Willis, our ardent researcher in Australia is researching several Paskes who were born in India, and then immigrated to Australia. During the process of following up on these Paskes, we found that Edward Hanson Paske who was born in Madras India, and was a Colonel in the Army, was related to a Lady L. Jervois. Edward's wife was called Amelia Caroline Jervois [not Jarvis, as listed on the website).

Lady L. Jervois was probably the wife of the Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, GCMG, CB who was a military engineer and Governor of the Straits Settlements, South Australia and New Zealand. The Governor had the habit of naming towns in South Australia after his friends, and family.

You can imagine our surprise when seaching for more information on Sir Jervois that we found Paskeville, a town 19 km ESE of Kadina Australia, was named on 4 March 1880, after General Paske, a brother-in-law of Governor Jervois.

Isaac & Mary Paske née Little

This information relates to Chart 34, the descendants of Philip Pask, (1768 - 1843) who lived in Bryngwyn, Monmouthshire.

As mentioned in the previous blog titled Descendants of Philip & Mary Pask née Morgan, we ordered the marriage certificate of Isaac Paske and Mary Little, to clarify the connection between Isaac Paske who was a Shoemaker born in Raglan in 1823, and Philip Pask who was also a Shoemaker and lived in Raglan.

The certificate arrived today, and confirms that Isaac's father was Philip Pask.

This information will be available in the next website update.

Descendants of Philip & Mary Pask née Morgan

This information relates to Chart 33, the descendants of Isaac Paske (1823 - 1888) of Raglan or Ragland, Monmouthshire, and Chart 34, the descendants of Philip Pask, (1768 - 1843) who lived in Bryngwyn, Monmouthshire.

Whilst researching the Monmouthshire families, I realised that there might be a connection between Isaac Paske who was a Shoemaker born in Raglan in 1823, and Philip Pask who was also a Shoemaker and lived in Raglan. In the 1841 census it shows, Philip a Cordwainer, living with his wife Mary, and children Jace?, John, Caroline, George, William, Elizabeth and Thomas. The census enumerator's writing was unclear and it was thought to be Jacob. However, it is now believed that what looks like Jace could be Isaac. The age ties up, and there is no further information on "Jace" found. Isaac moved to Cheltenham and can be found in the 1851-1881 censuses living with his wife Mary née Little, and their children Mary Jane, Caroline Ann, and Alexander.

I have ordered the marriage certificate of Isaac & Mary Pask née Little, and hopefully this will confirm my assumption. An alternative is to locate the will of his now assumed father Philip. Interestingly enough although Philip died in 1871, the will was not probated until 1906, 34 years' later.

In the meantime, I have merged the two records and the charts 33 & 34. In the next website update information on Isaac can be found against the current Jacob Paske.

Arthur William & Phoebe Giles née Pask

This information relates to the red-icon tree - descendants of Isaac PASK who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

Janet Loucks née Giles wrote to me in July, and explained:

My grandmother (Phoebe) married Arthur William Giles in Newport in 1897. They had one son, Arthur Richard Vincent Giles who was born 1902 in Newport. Phoebe and A.R. Vincent Giles emigrated to Prince George, BC Canada in 1919 after the death of Arthur William Giles. A.R.Vincent Giles married and had 3 children.

Phoebe was the daughter of Zachariah & Phoebe Paske née Jenkins. She was the 3 x great-granddaughter of the main progenitor in Monmouthshire, Isaac Pask.

I searched the passenger lists on http://www.findmypast.com/ for Phoebe's and Arthur's passage to Canada, but unfortunately could not locate them.

In the process of updating Phoebe's information, I also found her sister Mary married Alfred Gain, or Gaine in 1877, and they had two children Elizabeth Ann, and John Alfred.

This information will be available in the next website update. Many thanks to Janet for providing this information.

Website Update 7 August 2007

The website was updated today Tuesday 7 August. This update includes information as detailed in the previous blogs:

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed. A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. The narratives section now includes an additional 49 people, making a total of 6470 people.

Pasks of Usk, Monmouthshire

This information relates to Chart 4, the descendants of William PASKE, (1768 - 1855) Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire, and Chart 12, the descendants of Isaac PASK, (c1705 - ) who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

Paula Payne provided several baptisms, marriages, and burials from the parish of Usk, Monmouthshire.

This includes information on the family of William & Caroline Amelia Paske née Budding. Also on the descendants of Isaac Pask (Chart 12) and William Pask (Chart 4). This shows that these families must be linked, however the connection has not yet been found.

Many thanks to Paula for this information, which will be included in the next website update.

Descendants of Sydney & Rose Pask née Green

This information relates to Chart 31, the descendants of James PASK, (1797 - 1865) of Wickhambrook, Suffolk.

Thelma Milsom contacted me a few days ago, about her grandfather Sydney William Pask who married Rose Lily Green. They had two children William, and Thelma's father Jack.

Jack married Winifred C. Mortlock in 1924 in the Bury St. Edmunds registration district, and had two children Doris, and Thelma.

The family originated from Wickhambrook, however currently a connection between the main progenitor John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow has not been found. Hopefully the connection will be found, in readiness for the Pask Family Gathering on 26 July 2008.

David Richard Charles Gorman & Charlotte Eliza Pask

As mentioned in a previous blog West Ham Marriage Challenges, we recently received a transcript of the marriage of David Richard Charles Gorman, and Charlotte Eliza Pask.

The marriage transcript gave that she was a Spinster aged 24, residing at 17 Downsfield Road. Her father was listed as Lewis Pask (deceased), a Schoolmaster.

I knew that there was a Louis Rogers Pask, who was a schoolmaster. The 1891 census also confirmed that Louis was born in Grantham Lincolnshire, and was living with his wife Eliza, and daughter Charlotte E., who was born in 1885 in Liverpool.

I was unable to locate the marriage of Louis to Eliza, and there are several descrepancies over the age of Louis - in the 1901 census his age was given as 46, instead of 39; and at his death in 1908 his age was listed as 59 instead of 46. However I am sure this is the right one. Hopefully this will be confirmed in the future.

This information will be included in the next website update.

Thomas William & Clara Martha Pask née Linsell

As mentioned in a previous blog West Ham Marriage Challenges, we recently received a transcript of the marriage of Thomas William & Clara Martha Pask née Linsell.

There is a bit of mystery here.

Thomas is detailed as a Warehouseman, a Bachelor aged 22, residing at 38 Kingsley Road. His father was listed as Joseph Pask deceased. Clara is a Spinster aged 22, residing at 38 Kingsley Road. Her father was listed as John Linsell, a Mechanic.

I searched for Thomas' birth registration, and found him born 1885/Q1 PASK, Thomas William Braintree 4a 575. I also found his death registration in 1973, that shows his date of birth as 15 January 1885.

I then searched the 1891 census for his birth, and found a Thomas Pask aged 5 born in Finchingfield (in the Braintree registration district). He was listed with his father Joseph, a widower aged 52 born in Kedington. Also listed was his sisters Emily aged 26, and Alice aged 12 both born in Kedington.

I then searched back to the 1881 census, to find Alice is listed as the granddaughter of Joseph.

My theory is that Alice & Thomas are the children of Emily, and not as given in the 1891 census. I have sent for Thomas' birth certificate.

Clara died in 1968 at the age of 83, indicating that they were married for 61 years.

Newborn or Newman Pask

Just recently Colleen Willis, our main researcher in Australia provided some information on Newbon (or Newborn, or Newman) Pask was transported on "Recovery" arriving in Van Diemans Land 8 October 1837.

This is verified by some new records relating to Australia just recently issued by http://www.ancestry.co.uk/ - Australian Convict Transportation Registers – Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868. The record from the National Archives HO11/11 shows that Newborn Pask sailed on the "Recovery" departing on 27 May 1837 going to Van Diemans Land. He was convicted together with Richard Ellett, and Thomas Downes at Rutland Assizes on 3 May 1837 for life.

Newborn then appears several times in the New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849.

Recently Colleen has changed her ISP and although I am receiving e-mails from her, she seems not to be receiving my replies. Hopefully she is able to rectify the problem soon.

Descendants of Nathan Oliver & Susannah Pask née Phillips

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow.

Further to the recent blog titled William & Maud Pask née Phillips of Hargrave, I have now received the birth certificate of Kathleen Susannah Pask, and established that her parents were infact Frederick William Pask and Ellen Maud Pask formerly Phillips. Kathleen was born on 7 May 1911.

With this new information, I have been able to determine that Frederick William Pask was the son of Nathan Oliver & Susannah Pask née Phillips who lived in Hargrave. Frederick was the 3 x great-grandson of the main progenitor in Suffolk John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow.

I have been able to establish quite a lot more information thanks to the assistance of Rose Beadle, as she has contacted William & Maud's granddaughter Robbie. This new information will be included in the next website update.

West Ham Marriage Challenges

Yesterday I received six marriage transcripts from Peter Copsey of the Guild of One-Name Studies.

These six marriages relate to the West Ham Registration District, and include:

Sincere thanks to Peter for this valuable information. I understand that he had requests for over 2,500 marriages. So we are eternally grateful to him for providing us with these.

Copies of the marriage transcripts, and subsequently identified information will be included in the next website update.

Pasks of Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire

We have just finalized the first of a series of books that will be published for the Pask Family Gathering to be held in Whepstead, Suffolk on Saturday July 26, 2008.

The book covers the PASKs of Great Gonerby in Lincolnshire - the descendants of John & Alice Pask née Woodcock who settled in Great Gonerby in the early 1790s. The book is 142 pages, and covers 8 generations, and 350+ descendants, including Professor Andrew Gordon Speedie Pask(1928-1928), and his brother Professor Edgar Alexander Pask (1912-1966). Also Barnabas Thomas Pask, John & Alice's grandson, known as Thomas, who signed the original conveyancing in 1857 of the Primitive Methodist Church in Great Gonerby.

There are detailed charts for the main families, minibiographies of approximately 350 people, together with 110 photographs.

The book has information on the Pask, Paske One-Name Study and a full index by surname and christian names of the people mentioned in the book.

This publication will be using the services of Lulu (http://www.lulu.com/). Lulu gives us the power to publish and sell books. There are no set-up fees. No minimum order. No delay. Lulu prints and ships each book as it's bought. We can easily revise the book by creating a new revision and republishing it.

The major advantage for family history purposes is that a revised PDF can be sent to LULU at any time and all subsequent copies are thereafter printed from this revised version. This means that corrections and additions can be made very easily.

Do check out Lulu website. The book is available in black & white at £6.85, or in superb colour at £17.78. Alternative you can download it for £3.50. There is a preview available, so that you can see whether it is of interest to you.

Charles Paske (1846-1920) from Usk

This information relates to Chart 4, the descendants of William Paske, (1768 - 1855) from Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire.

Caroline White wrote to us this week and pointed out that Charles Paske born in 1846 in Usk, and shown as the progenitor in Chart 5, is the same person as Charles Paske who is shown in Chart 4, the grandson of William Paske from Cwmcarvan.

These two records will be merged, and in the next website update you will find additional information for Charles Paske. Chart 5 will also be merged into Chart 4.

Many thanks to Caroline for pointing this out.

William & Maud Pask née Phillips of Hargrave

This information relates to a currently unidentified main branch of the family with roots in Suffolk.

Rose Beadle has been writing to us over the last few days. Her mother was a close friend of the Pask family who ran the Post Office & general store in the centre of Hargrave, Suffolk. Next door was a pair of semi-detached cottages; Rose's grandparents lived in the first, and Laura Pask in the second.

Rose's mother was bridesmaid at the marriage of Laura Irene (Nene) Pask to Frank Morley in 1945 in Bury St. Edmunds registration district.

Rose has kindly provided the photographs of both Nene's wedding, and also her sister Kathleen Susannah Pask to William G. Hunt in 1937.

Laura Irene (Nene) Pask was the bridesmaid, next to the Bride. Their father William Pask, known as "Woodbine Will", was standing between his two daughters.

Currently we are unable to identify specifically their parents - however they are believed to be William & Maud Pask née Phillips. We have ordered Kathleen's birth certificate to confirm this.

In addition, they had a son Alec W. Pask, who was born 1916, and believed to have died in 1960 in the Norwich registration district.

If anyone has additional information on this family, we would be very interested. Many thanks to Rose for her information that has helped us group this family.

Descendants of James & Mary Pask née Allen

This information relates to the Purple-Icon tree - descendants of John & Frances Pask née Haffinden who originated from Thundersley, Essex.

Through genes reunited, I have been in contact with Margaret Robinson who has a very slight connection to the Pask family in New Zealand. She writes that Allen Neil Pask married Madeline Margaret Davis, who was born in Feilding, New Zealand. They have three children:

  1. Sharlene Tonia Pask
  2. Kevin Barry Pask
  3. Tracey Marie Pask

It would be good to include this family on Chart 10, and connect them back to James & Margaret Pask née Allen. It is likely that they are descendants of James & Mary Pask née Allen son's David Allen Pask, or James Pask.

Website Update 15 July 2007

The website was updated today Sunday 15 July. This update includes information as detailed in the previous blogs:

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed. A full list of these recent changes to the narratives is available in the New or Changed Narratives section. The narratives section now includes 6421 people.

Sidney Robert B. Pask (1906-1980)

This information relates to Chart 14, the descendants of William Pask, (1791 - 1874) Caythorpe, Lincolnshire.

Further to the previous blog titled Sidney Robert B. Pask (1906-1980), I am delighted to say that during my search of the Scottish births, marriages, and deaths on the Scotland Peoples website, I found the elusive marriage certificate for Sidney Robert Brown Pask.

He married on 26 December 1929 in St. Peters Church Edinburgh to Catherine Dewar Henderson, who was also a School Teacher. Based on this information, their daughter is probably Marjorie who was born in 1937 in the Hendon registration district, and possibly married in 1960 in the St. Albans registration district. Further investigation is required.

This information will be included in the next website update.

George Thomas Pask (1863-1919)

This information relates to the black-icon tree - descendants of John & Alice Pask née Woodcock.

Yesterday I was in contact, through Genes Reunited with Peter J. Pask. Fortunately Peter had given me access to his family tree, and I determined that he had traced his family back to John Charles Francis Pask who was born in Stronsay in the Orkneys.

We have not really done any Scottish research, except for censuses. However, I accessed the Scotland Peoples website, and searched for his birth in 1905. Fortunately the Scottish birth certificates for that period can be purchased online and downloaded.

I was extremely surprised, but delighted to realise that John's father was George Thomas Pask, the son of John & Ann Pask née Bell. We had "lost" George and his family, last known to be in Seaforth Lancashire in the 1901 census. We knew that George was in the Royal Artillery, similar to his brother John Edward Pask. George had married Mary Webb in Carew, Pembrokeshire in 1890, and they had three children.

I downloaded John Charles Francis Pask's birth certificate, and realised that although his father was George Thomas Pask, his mother was Margaret Elizabeth Liddle. Also in the birth index, there was another birth for a Lilian Dorothy Evelyn Pask, whose birth certificate showed the father as George Thomas Pask, and mother Mary Webb. Sadly I found the death certificate for Mary Webb who had died in February 1904, shortly after Lilian's birth.

With four young children to bring up, as would be customary in those days, George remarried on 8 December 1904 to Margaret Elizabeth Liddle in Stronsay. His brother John must have also been stationed in Stronsay at that time as he witnessed the marriage.

This information has been included in the database, and will be available in the next website update.

Together with Peter, we have been able to connect another 24 "living" people to the chart of John & Alice Pask née Woodcock. This was very timely as we are in the final stages of completing the Pasks of Great Gonerby book in preparation for the Pask Family Gathering on July 26, 2008. Stuart & Peter are fourth cousins. Many thanks to Peter for providing this information.

Family of Alfred Harry & Annie née Thomas

This information relates to the khaki-icon tree - descendants of Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, born 1739 in Kedington, Suffolk.

Today Edwin has provided a superb photograph taken about 1918, of the family of Alfred Harry & Annie née Thomas.

Edwin writes:

"This is the family of Alfred Harry Pask & Annie Thomas, and these are the 10 that survived. Going from left to right you have: Edith, Millie, Alfred Harry Jnr (known always as Sonny), Vera (my mother), Evelyn (some called Blanche, her middle name), Reggie, Winnie, Bert, Bob and Freda.
He was given a copy, and thinks that his Aunt Freda held the original, but she died several years ago."

I am sure you will agree that this is an absolutely superb photograph. Many thanks to Edwin for sharing this photograph.

Descendants of Edward John & Betty Pask née Ainsworth

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow.

Samantha Cole née Pask wrote to us yesterday and provided information on the descendants of Edward John & Betty Pask née Ainsworth.

Samantha is the 8th great-granddaughter of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, the main progenitor of the Suffolk Pasks.

Samantha's information has been included in the database, and her parents, sister, and their children will be displayed on Chart 2 in the next website update. Many thanks to Samantha for contacting us.

Necklace of Rebecca Hodges née Pask

This information relates to the red-icon tree - descendants of Isaac PASK who lived in Llanvihangel-ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire.

Kay Hodges wrote to us and provided a photograph of a necklace, together with a letter dated 1938, explaining the history of the necklace. Kay wrote:

"I think you will find this interesting. I have seen this necklace and held it in my hands. It is beautiful to touch and know that it belonged to My G G Grandmother Rebecca. The story is fantastic as to how many years it took to get it to Ruby Wheeler, who is a cousin of my Father".
The necklace belonged to Rebeka or Rebecca Hodges née Pask who died on 25 April 1865 at the age of 33. The necklace was given by her husband James Hodges to Alice Bailey Cottam, who immigrated to Utah, USA at the age of 11.

Many thanks to Kay for sharing with us the photograph, letter, and accompanying information. This is now included in the database, and will be available in the next website update.

Unidentified Photographs

This information relates to unidentified photographs, and is currently unconnected to a Pask family.

Paula Payne has provided three additional photographs she has found in her Aunt's collection. Paula writes:

"I have attached in hope someone may be able to recognise the subjects, a very slim chance but you never know. The first attachment has the name PASK on the back but that's all, the other two have nothing. "

If you are able to identify any of these photographs do let us know. Paula will be delighted.

Website Update 24 June 2007

The website was updated today Sunday 24 June. This update includes information as detailed in the previous blogs:

Whitechapel Registration District Marriages continued

This information relates to Chart 10, the descendants of John Pask (1771 - 1847) of Thundersley, Essex.

I have been working together with Susan Keefe to investigate the three marriage transcripts, provided by Howard Benbrook, as part of the Whitechapel Registration District Marriage Challenge.

We have established that Mary Ann Pask, Elizabeth Pask, and James Pask were the children of John & Mary Ann Pask née Bowness. We have now researched these families, where possible, through to the 1901 census. This involved the Bragg, Berry, and Cheeseman families.

Many thanks to Susan for her assistance and superb census investigation skills.

Descendants of Charles Randolph Pask

This information relates to the khaki-icon tree - descendants of Peter & Catherine Pask née Frost, born 1739 in Kedington, Suffolk.

Recently Debbie Edwards contacted me regarding the descendants of Charles Randolph & Hilda Nellie May Pask née Smith. They had eleven children, all born in Buckinghamshire.

Debbie, together with her mother Pamela Margaret née Dermott, who married Bernard Cornelius Pask, they have provide the names of these eleven children, and their families.

Sincere thanks to Debbie & Pamela for detailing 50+ additions to the Pask database. This information will be provided in the next website update.

Whitechapel Registration District Marriages

This information relates to Chart 10, the descendants of John Pask (1771 - 1847) of Thundersley, Essex.

We have just received three marriage transcripts, provided by Howard Benbrook, as part of the Whitechapel Registration District Marriage Challenge.

The Marriage Challenge is a Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) Project in which volunteers (Challengers) search for marriage entries in the deposited Parish Registers for a particular Registration District for the period 1837 to 1911.

Howard has kindly provided the following marriages from Christ Church Parish Church, Spitalfields:

We believe the marriages are all related, as in all instances, the father's name was John Pask a Shoe Maker, and two marriages were connected by the witnesses. However, until now we were not aware of the connections.

Many thanks to Howard for providing these marriage transcripts. They have enabled us to piece together more information on this London-based family, who originated from Thundersley.

The detailed information from these marriage transcripts will be available in the next website update.

Montague Arthur Pask

This information relates to a London family, currently unconnected to a main branch that has descendants in Australia.

Last week we purchased the birth certificate for Montague Albert Pask, who is the grandfather of Emma Pask, the very talented jazz singer from Australia.

Montague Albert Pask was born on 3 September 1909 in 9 Farmingham Road, Tottenham, London. He was the son of John Joseph & Sarah Pask née Brown.

During the process of including this information into the database, it was determined that John Joseph's parents were John & Lydia Pask née Taylor. Whilst updating the census information prior to 1881, it was established that John Pask born 1845 in London Middlesex, was the same person as John Pask born 1844 in St. Pancras Middlesex, the son of John Pask & Isabella Gollan, previously detailed in the November blog titled John and Isabella Pask née Gollan.

These two John Pasks will be merged, and updated in the next website update.

Pask Family Gathering 2008 - Newsletter 1

The first newsletter for the Pask Family Gathering 2008 is in the process of being sent to all our Pask researchers.

This newsletter is the initial notification that there will be a family gathering on Saturday July 26 2008. Where it will be, and what facilities are available. This is so that you can plan well in advance.

We are currently working on the admission costs, and trying to minimise wherever possible. Additionally we hope to arrange a BBQ from 6pm, at a minimal charge.

We plan to have an update in July-August, and will provide a form for you to complete so that we can determine the numbers attending.

If you have not yet received your newsletter, do not be concerned. This mail shot is taking longer than anticipated as I have to compile a distribution list from all the individual e-mail lists. So apologies to the researchers with christian names in the latter part of the alphabet. You should receive your e-mail in the next few days.

Pasks of Cooma, New South Wales, Australia

This information relates to an Australian family, currently unconnected to a main branch.

Colleen Willis has provided some information about Charles and George Pask, who are possibly brothers. They lived in Cooma, New South Wales, Australia.

Colleen writes:

I found two deaths to [people who listed their ] parents John and Harriett, one is the Charles who married Catherine McMullen, the other is George, I think they must be brothers, they were both in Cooma New South Wales, but Charles had
married Catherine in Adelaide 1858, and George married Hannah Goddard in 1897 in Cooma. Charles died in 1899 and George died in 1942. There is an excellent web site on the Monaro Pioneers, (which includes Cooma) and I have put a request on that for any descendants. Charles was a police constable there, he was appointed 1863, he is listed on an index as police in 1872.

In an earlier e-mail, Colleen provided information on the four children born to Catherine & Charles.

I have searched the database, but did not find a likely match. I have this information and hopefully more information will come to light. This will be included in the next website update.

Many thanks to Colleen for her relentless research of the Pasks of Australia.

John Joseph Stephen & Julie Wiber née Pask

This information relates to the Purple-Icon tree - descendants of John & Frances Pask née Haffinden who originated from Thundersley, Essex.

Colleen Willis our most prolific researcher of Pasks in Australia, has provided some information on Julia Pask, who we knew married a Wiber, but had no additional information. Colleen writes:

Julia arrived on the 'Parsee' as discovered before. Her first child was born at sea in 1858, named Emma Julia, but they travelled under the name Pask. Then I found that Julia had married John Joseph Wiber June Qtr. 1857 Maidstone Kent. He does not appear to be on the Parsee, but I can't be sure about that. Julia Wiber died in Collingwood Victoria Australia in 1904, They had nine children before 1879. I have looked for his birth, the name could be Webber. I looked at the 1841 and 1851 census, but cant pick him. Victorian records don't have a death for him either.
I have searched for some additional information, and have found an entry on Ancestry World Tree indicating that John was born in c1830. Also that they were married on 3 June 1857 in Maidstone. I will contact Wayne Robinson, the researcher, and see if I can find more information.

John Pask born 16 October 1844

This information relates to the Purple-Icon tree, the descendants of John & Frances Pask née Haffinden who originated from Thundersley, Essex.

For a significant time now, there has been a lot of confusion over two John Pask who were born in 1844/Q4. One was born in Shoreditch, and the other in Whitechapel.

I decided to purchase the birth certificates for these two entries (click the link to display the certificate):

1844/Q4 PASK, John Shoreditch 2 389
1844/Q4 PASK, John Whitechapel 2 588
They arrived last Friday, and to our utmost surprise they are for the same person.

John, of Shoreditch was registered by his father on 27 November, and John of Whitechapel was registered by his mother on 10 November. There are other descrepancies - the Shoreditch certificate gives his place of birth as 11 Long Alley, and the Whitechapel certificates gives Boarshead Yard. Fortunately the parents (well almost) are the same John Pask, a Shoemaker and Mary Ann Pask née Bowness. In the Shoreditch certificate it gives Mary, and in the Whitechapel Mary Ann.

This certificate now confirms the link between John Pask and the Essex family of John & Frances Pask née Haffinden of Thundersley - the red-icon tree.

This is the first time in 25 years' research that we have every come across such a duplication of records. There is a now quite a bit of sorting out to do, and merging of records. Many thanks to all concerned, who have been actively involved in unravelling this mystery.

Please note: The incorrect icon colour is currently assigned to this tree. I will update this in the next website update.

Limited Access to E-Mails

As you can see last week was a very busy week with five new inquiries from researchers looking for Pask connections.

This always seems the case when I have limited access to e-mails. Last week I was in Germany, although on business, I had the opportunity to go to Immenstadt in the Bodensee, also known as Lake Constance. The drive down through the outskirts of the Black Forest was beautiful albeit in heavy rain at times.

I am away on business again this coming week. This time back to Galway Ireland. Stuart is holding the fort back at home. From previous experience, I will have limited access to e-mails. So apologies in advance if it takes a little longer to reply. Nevertheless keep sending me updates, as I will have my laptop with me, and able to work on the information.

George Colin & Florence E. Paske

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow.

Yet another descendant of John & Mirabel Pask contacted us this week. Stewart Paske grew up and lived in Stapleford, Cambridge.

His great-grandparents are believed to be George Colin Pask & Florence E. Paske, who were cousins and lived in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.

George Samuel & Emma Goldsmith née Pask

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow.

We received another inquiry yesterday relating to the descendants of John & Mirabel Sparrow. This time is was from Margaret & Richard Cameron of Brisbane, Australia.

Margaret is looking for a possible connection between George Samuel & Emma Goldsmith née Pask who lived in Whepstead Suffolk, and her ancestors:

Abraham Goldsmith b. c. 1719. From his will I think he had two marriages, but I do not know the name of his first wife. Second wife was Mary, maiden name unknown. I found their graves in the Whepstead churchyard on one of my many visits to the U.K.

Abraham died in Whepstead 2nd June, 1799 and Mary in Oct. 1784. Abraham had the following children: Abraham, Mary, William (my ancestor) Elizabeth, Sarah, George and Susan. George was baptised 14th June 1771 in Whepstead and
had children Edward and George. I do not know the name of his wife, but I can't help wondering if your George who married Emily Pask was a descendent of my George.

Hopefully a fellow researcher of this branch can assist in finding whether there is a connection.

Whepstead is the venue of the Pask Family Gathering on July 26 2008.

Philip & Mabel Emma King née Pask

This information relates to the green-icon tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow.

Rod Ashford wrote to us this week about his grandmother Gladys King, the daughter of Philip & Mabel Emma King née Paske.

Rod writes:

Under his father's guidance, Philip trained as a school teacher ... Philip wasn't happy and ran away to become a Policeman in Twickenham. Sadly he was knocked off his bicycle and killed. As there was no welfare state his wife Mabel, and children became homeless. ...The family was split up Gladys returned
to Tadworth - Philip had brothers all living next door to each other - that's on the census. Actually the enumerator for the census in Tadworth/burgh heath (comes under Banstead) was Philip's father.

Many thanks to Rod for this information. We hopefully have put him in contact with other researchers of the descendants of Philip & Mabel Emma King née Pask.

Pa(r)s(k)(e)(que)

This information relates to Chart 29, the descendants of Thomas Pasque of Theberton Suffolk.

During the past two weeks we have been working together with Kevin Parsk who is a descendant of Thomas & Ann Pasque née Knighting.

Kevin wrote:

I have tried to do my own research through the public records and ancestry.com but have always been stymied by the continual change of spellings from Pasque to Parsk. Our branch tradition is that a legendary Spicer Parsk changed the spelling when accused of being a French spy!
Kevin's dilema is that his family name has changed continually throughout the generations. He has recorded all the possible variants of Pa(r)s(k)(e)(que).

Kevin has helped considerally by identifying missing entries in the GRO Indexes, particularly of his name Parsk, which is now mainly located in Sussex, Surrey, and Yorkshire. With only 12 births in the last 20 years this indeed is a very unusual surname.

Kevin's information has been partly included in the database and will be updated in the next website update.

Elizabeth Maria Hathway née Pasque

This information relates to Chart 40, the descendants of Hezekiah & Sarah Pasque née Bentley, who lived in Cripplegate, London in the early 1800s.

Yesterday Fred Waite contacted us, he writes:

My Pasque connection is through the marriage of Elizabeth Maria Pasque, daughter of Hezekiah Pasque and Sarah to Henry Carrington Hathway. Elizabeth was baptised 14 May 1818 at Christ's Church, Greyfriars, Newgate, London.

Fred has provided information on Elizabeth and Henry's descendants. However Fred is unable to find their marriage. Any assistance would be appreciated from our fellow researchers.

Northampton Registration District Marriages

This information relates to Chart 38, the descendants of Thomas & Hannah Pask née Parish, who lived in Upminster, Essex, and Northampton.

We have just received four marriage transcripts, provided by Jenny Reeve, as part of the Northampton Registration District Marriage Challenge.

The Marriage Challenge is a Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) Project in which volunteers (Challengers) search for marriage entries in the deposited Parish Registers for a particular Registration District for the period 1837 to 1911.

Jenny has kindly provided the following marriages:

Many thanks to Jenny for providing these marriage transcripts, and the additional information on the descendants of Thomas & Hannah Pask née Parish.

The detailed information from these marriage transcripts will be available in the next website update.

Harry & Louisa Alice Diaper née Pask

This information relates to Chart 8 , the descendants of John Pask, who lived in Shoreditch, London.

A few weeks ago I received a marriage transcript, provided by Kirsty Gray Debenham as part of the Edmonton Registration District Marriage Challenge.

The marriage was of Harry Diaper and Louisa Alice Pask, who married on 12 September 1898 in Tottenham. Louisa was the daughter of John Joseph Pask (deceased) a Whale Bone Cutter.

Previously it was not really confirmed that John was called John Joseph. There were three Johns born in the same year and same quarter. I have ordered the certificates for two of these Johns so that we can determine the parents, and establish which one is which. I hope to have an update at the end of next week.

Many thanks to Kirsty for providing the certificate.
