John Bensley Gresham Page Paske

This relates to the descendants of John Pask whose son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW and they lived in Stragwell, Suffolk.

As a follow-on to the recent blog on Henry Gresham Paske. Pam Mercier wrote to us about Henry's uncle, John Bensley Gresham Page Paske.

Pam writes:

I am researching the Gresham name and have noted that several Paske men bear that name as part of the forenames.

It has been my experience that usually having a surname as part of your forename indicates a marriage of a Gresham woman into that line.

The first I can find is John Bensley Gresham Page Paske 1791 Barking Suffolk, he married according to the IGI and East India co records to a Harriet Newman and had one daughter Harriet Bensley Gresham Paske who died in 1837 a few months after giving birth to a son from her marriage to Francis Henry Crozier( 1836 Madras) the son was called Gresham Paske Rawson Crozier b1837 Madras d1870 Wandsworth. Gresham married Laura Kew in 1859 in South Kensington and had three children:
Walter Gresham Crozier 1860-1871
Montague Liston Paske Crozier 1868 1909 unmarried
Margaret Hester Crozier 1869

We agree entirely with Pam, we also believe that these are mother's maiden names passed through the generations. Unfortunately we are not sure which mother, or mothers had these names.

Henry Gresham Paske

This relates to the descendants of John Pask whose son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW and they lived in Stragwell, Suffolk.

Martin Brady, contacted us again today. He is not related, however he is very interested in military history. He has provided information before - see a previous blog.

This time he has provided a gem - a carte de visite, or visiting card, of Henry Gresham Paske.

Henry was the son of Edward & Helen Amelia Paske née Gurley. He was a Lieutenant in the 95th Foot (Derbyshire) and was listed in the medal roll for the Indian Mutiny 1857-1859.

I received some very timely information from Jo Pask today, she found a snippet of information in the East Anglian Times edition 1944:

Miss Helen Paske of Wanstead on November 14th 1944 celebrated her 104th Birthday. She was born at Creeting St Peter Rectory, daughter of the Rev. Edward Paske.

I am currently researching this family. Helen's brothers served in India.

This information relates to the yellow-icon tree - descendants of John Paske c1600, who lived in Cambridgeshire - his son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW.

As a follow on from the previous blog on this branch of the PASKEs, Colleen Willis has again come up with some very interesting information. She pointed me to a source not previously searched - the British Library website, in the India Office Records.

It took me several minutes to find what Colleen was referring to. Even knowing it was there, the website was not intuitive. However it was worth persevering. The trick is to search the home page of the British Library for the India Office Records, then look for the sentence

The India Office Family History Search database contains around 300,000 records for British and European people in India between 1600 and 1949.

If you use the search option at the top of the webpage, it just takes you back to the British Library search that has 33 records relating to books written by Paskes, or about Paskes. However using the hyperlink India Office Family History Search, it provides 20 detailed records, providing some births, marriages, and deaths and some biographies. For example for

Paskeville, Australia

This information relates to the yellow-icon tree - descendants of John Paske c1600, who lived in Cambridgeshire - his son John married Mary GOLDSBOROW.

Colleen Willis, our ardent researcher in Australia is researching several Paskes who were born in India, and then immigrated to Australia. During the process of following up on these Paskes, we found that Edward Hanson Paske who was born in Madras India, and was a Colonel in the Army, was related to a Lady L. Jervois. Edward's wife was called Amelia Caroline Jervois [not Jarvis, as listed on the website).

Lady L. Jervois was probably the wife of the Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, GCMG, CB who was a military engineer and Governor of the Straits Settlements, South Australia and New Zealand. The Governor had the habit of naming towns in South Australia after his friends, and family.

You can imagine our surprise when seaching for more information on Sir Jervois that we found Paskeville, a town 19 km ESE of Kadina Australia, was named on 4 March 1880, after General Paske, a brother-in-law of Governor Jervois.
