Website Update 3 June 2016

During May, there has been a significant flurry of activity, which involved following up on a close match in Stuart's Autosomal (Family Finder) DNA Kit. This resulted in a wealth of new information, a trip to Lincolnshire Archives, and visits to the churches of Great Ponton, and Hough-on-the-Hill in Lincolnshire.

DNA Test Results

We were contacted by John Leadbeater - his father had a match with Stuart's DNA results, indicating he was a 2nd-3rd cousin. John believes it is through the Grococks, from Nottinghamshire, and Leicestershire. Stuart's 3rd great-grandmother was Ann Grocock. Very little was known about her - we had last updated her information on 31 December 2006. With today's wealth of internet resources, we were able to find her three children, and trace her back a further two generations to Samuel & Dorothy Grocock née Barns who married on 11 April 1731 in St. Giles' Church, West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.

LCC Wills

Along the way, we discovered there were several GROCOCK wills in the Lincolnshire Archives, so we made a visit there to photograph the wills. We have created a photograph album in Google, if you would like to see the images of three wills of her mother Alice Grocock née Dant; her father Philip Grocock, and her brother Samuel Grocock.

Ann Grocock married William Moulds on 29 December 1800 in All Saints' Church, Hough-on-the-Hill, Lincolnshire. As we were in Lincolnshire, we visited this beautiful church, and Stuart took several photographs. These are included in the photograph album All Saints Church, Hough-on-the-Hill.

William and Ann lived in Great Ponton. In early April, Stuart visited Great Ponton church, and photographed the church - see the photograph album Church of The Holy Cross, Great Ponton Church, and Churchyard. In Great Ponton's churchyard Stuart found a couple of graves which we were unable to identify.

Descendants of Joseph and Sarah Moulds Family Tree

Subsequently, in our endeavours to find who they were (we have still not found them), we searched Ancestry Public Family Trees and found the tree of Descendants of Joseph and Sarah Moulds compiled by Andrew Buchanan-Smith. Wow! What a wealth of information. Joseph & Sarah Moulds née Smith, were Stuart's 4th great-grandparents. Their grand-daughter, Sarah Moulds married Thomas Pask.

Based on the information kindly provided by Andrew, it has enabled us to build a significant tree of the descendants of William Moulds, (c1710-1774), Stuart's 5th great-grandfather. Wherever possible, we have tried to collaborate Andrew's research. Fortunately, the website Find my Past, now has a lot of the original images of Lincolnshire Parish Registers 1538-1911, and we have included the baptisms, marriages, and burials images.

Also, earlier this year, we took out membership for the British Newspaper Archive. We therefore have included the Death Notices, wherever possible, and in some instances inquest reports.

Finally, in this website update, there are several Suffolk marriages included, as detailed in the previous blog, Suffolk Marriages More Updates.

Find My Past has added additional marriages in the Suffolk marriage-index.

Suffolk Marriage Index

As mentioned in the previous blog, the transcription consists of tens of thousands of entries, between 1536 and 1902, and covering over 433 out of approximately 500 parishes of the County of Suffolk.  

This latest updates included the parishes of Denston, Great Thurlow, Haverhill, Hundon, Kedington, Mildenhall, Theberton, Wickhambrook, and Withersfield.
 
We found an additional 17 marriages in these parishes:

  0 PARSKs (Total 3) 
  2 PASQUEs (Total 2)

Overall, we now have 117 Suffolk marriages. All these new records have been included in our database, and will be available in the next website update.

Suffolk Marriages Update

Following on from the blogs Happy Valentine's Day and Suffolk Baptisms and Marriages, we confirm that the Suffolk marriages have now all been included into the  
PA(R)S(K)(E)(QUE) database.

Of the 396 marriages found in the Boyd's Marriage Index, 230 were in Suffolk. These included 31, kindly provided by Sam Hammond. Also several of them were duplicates of the Suffolk Marriage Index. These were distributed amongst the family groups:

The 'Not Known' in the Suffolk Marriage Index, and the Boyd's Marriage Index have been included into the database, and now have an icon indicating that the record was in Suffolk, but not yet assigned to a family chart. Similarily, there are now 'Not Known' icons for other counties.

All these new records have been included in a website update today, making it the largest update we have done. 295 new narratives have been added. There are now a total of 11,573 detailed narratives available on the website and 18,633 (297 new) people in our database.

Happy Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated on February 14, all over the world. The day is an occasion in which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, and sending greeting cards. 

Yesterday, we received a list of people who undoubtedly expressed their love for each other. Sam Hammond provided us with a list of 31 Suffolk marriages from Boyd's Marriage Index, ranging from 1653 to 1750. 

Today, we will be including these in our database, together with the 100 Suffolk marriages mentioned in the previous blog Suffolk Baptisms and Marriages.

Norfolk Parish Records

Yesterday, Find My Past included in their records Norfolk Baptism, Marriages, and Burials. 

Each record not only gives a transcript of the details found in the records, but also a great bonus of the original image of the parish register.

We found, and have compiled a spreadsheet of :

Many of the records were for 1600-1700, and not yet included in our database.

Greater London Burial Index

Last Friday, Find My Past included in their records The Greater London Burial Index. 

The Greater London Burial Index is a collection of:

• City of London Burials 1754-1855
• Middlesex Burials 1538-1992

We found, and compiled a spreadsheet of :

Suffolk Baptisms and Marriages

Find My Past have recently included in their records Suffolk Baptism Index 1538-1911, and Suffolk Marriage Index.

Suffolk Baptism Index 1538-1911
The Suffolk Baptism Index was created by the Suffolk Family History Society. The index includes 351 parishes and 747,204 records across the East Anglian county. We found:

Whilst we have a lot of the baptisms, kindly provided by the Suffolk researchers, we have compiled a spreadsheet. We are checking the entries, and adding any new ones to the database. 

During the past week, we have added information on baptisms. In particular PASK-related families in Lawshall, and Cockfield, Suffolk. 

Charlotte Pask married Daniel Lambert and they had eleven children. They in turn had several children, and subsequently this resulted in an additional 47 new narratives.

Website Update 13 January 2016

The website was updated today, Wednesday 13 January 2016. The main focus of the updates were:
Charles PASK (c1734-1805) lived in Dingestow, and Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire. He married Jane Cowcum, and their descendants span eight generations.

Michael R.A. Paske, has been writing to us since 2012. He provided a photograph of his great-grandfather Amos Paske's, grocery shop in North Woolwich. He has also provided extensive information passed to him after the death of his cousin Edith Jean Philipott. This information will be included in a future website update.
 
Simultaneously, we heard for the first time, from Michael A. Paske, who now lives in Texas. He is the great-grandson of William Paske from Kansas. William, and his brother Amos, were both born in Abergavenny Monmouthshire. In the 1870s, Amos, and his brother William immigrated to Kansas. However, Amos and his wife Jane returned c1885 and moved to Woolwich. 

The two Michaels are now in touch with each other and exchanging family history. Fortunately based on information from Michael, and the assistance of www.findagrave.com, we have been able to include a lot of missing pieces of the remaining Kansas famly.

This information relates to the main Suffolk tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 who lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk. In particular descendants of John Pask (1709-179) their first son. 

As a follow-on from the previous website update, additional information was kindly provided by Derek Mouland, from Australia, on his grandfather Charles Mouland, and his wife Annie Elizabeth Pask.

  This information relates to Chart 6 - Unknown Pask who lived in Kedington, Suffolk.

We have now included all the relevant information kindly provided by Terence Farrant's extensive summary of several generations of the descendants of Susan Paske, who married Joseph Coote in 1856 in Kedington, Suffolk.   

  Thomas PASK was born in 1820 in Upminster, Essex. He was the son of Thomas PASK. Thomas married Hannah PARISH on 25 December 1840 in The Parish Church, Upminster, Essex. Thomas was a Cordwainer.

Just before Christmas we heard from the granddaughter of Malcolm 'Patrick' Pask, who died at the age of 19 in a road accident. Malcolm was the grandson of Bertram Lionel Pask, who died in WWI. Bertram never knew his son, Gordon Mons Aisne Pask. Similiarily, Gordon died in WWII, Malcolm was aged 7 at the time. Malcolm never knew his daughter Joy, as he died before she was born. 


41 new narratives have been added since the last update on 1 November 2015. There is now a total of 11,231 detailed narratives available on the website and 18,288 (73 new) people in our database.

Website Update Sunday 1 November 2015

The website was updated yesterday, Sunday 1 November 2015.

This information relates to the main Suffolk tree - descendants of John & Mirabel Pask née Sparrow, born c1680 who lived in Wickhambrook, Suffolk. In particular descendants of John Pask (1709-179) their first son.

This information relates to Chart 6 - Unknown Pask who lived in Kedington, Suffolk.

This information relates to a new Chart 8 - Descendants of Philip & Elizabeth Pask née Barnard, They married in 1808 in Stambourne, Essex and lived in Sible Hedingham.

This update focuses on three families who orginated in Suffolk, and Essex:

• Annie Elizabeth Pattle, born Pask, who moved from Suffolk to Dorset, and married Charles Mouland, a Dairyman. They had four children, and lived a long and hard-working life. Many thanks to Derek Mouland, who provided extensive information, and photographs, relating to this family.
• The family of Terence Farrant, who has been writing to us since 2013. In August this year, Terry provided an extensive summary of several generations of the descendants of Susan Paske, who married Joseph Coote in 1856 in Kedington, Suffolk.  
• Philip Pask, who married Elizabeth Bernard in 1808. They lived in Essex.
  A new chart 08 has been created to detail Philip's descendants.
  Their daughter Hephzibah married Ephraim Tyler on 2 May 1830 in Great Maplestead, Essex. Unfortunately on 23 July 1832, Ephraim was convicted in Chelmsford Essex of Housebreaking, and sentenced to Life. He was transported on the 'Andromeda', departing on 13 November 1832, arriving in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia on 11 March 1833. Subsequently, nearly seven years later Hephzibah remarried, and had five more children. Many thanks to Lorraine Hall, who kindly provided the background information.
  Further research is required, as it is probable that this family is linked to Chart 54, also from Essex.

Since the last update on 12 October 2015, 91 new narratives have been added. There are now a total of 11,190 detailed narratives available on the website and 18,215 (157 new) people in our database.

Website Update Monday 12 October

The website was updated today, Monday 12 October 2015.
This information relates to the main Lincolnshire tree - descendants of Johannis [John] and Elizabeth Pask née Archer, who lived in Lincolnshire.

Chart 11: John Pask, (c1745-1793) who married Elizabeth Fountain and they lived in Gautby, Lincolnshire. 

This update focuses on two Lincolnshire families:

• Doris Eliza Pask, who immigrated to Australia in 1926, and married Frank Smalley.

• Ann Pask, who was baptised in 1766 in Wellingore. She married George Rawdin(g) in Brant Broughton, and they had nine children.

23 new narratives have been added since the last update on 1 October 2015. There is now a total of 11,099 detailed narratives available on the website and 18,058 (28 new) people in our database.

Website Update Thursday 1 October 2015

This information relates to the main Lincolnshire tree - descendants of Johannis [John] and Elizabeth Pask née Archer, who lived in Lincolnshire.

The website was updated today, Thursday 1 October 2015.

This update focuses on William & Bridget Pask née Massey who were born and married in Great Hale in 1824. They then moved to Ewerby in Lincolnshire. 

After the death of his wife Bridget, in December 1843, William immigrated to New Jersey in America, at the same time his children also moved to several places in the USA. 

This has been a very interesting couple of weeks researching this family, who resided in New Jersey, Ohio, and Indiana. We initially researched this family back in 2004/5. There is now significantly more information available on the internet - including baptism and marriage records, photographs and numerous newspaper articles from the places where they settled.  

There are currently 73 known descendants of this family. Undoubtedly this figure will double over time. 

This included two individuals that really were quite special: 

• Milton Lawrence McCall, their 2 x great-grandson, although he died in 1963, at the early age of 52, he left a lasting legacy. So much so that only this year he has been honoured. For more information read his narrative.

• Elmer Allah Burlingame, their great-grandaughter's husband. In 1898, while attending high school, he got an idea. Elmer went on to be in the fore-front of the world’s greatest inventive geniuses. Unfortunately in 1914, things began to go very wrong. For more information read his narrative.

44 new narratives have been added since the last update on 15 September 2015. There is now a total of 11,076 detailed narratives available on the website and 18,030 (45 new) people in our database.

Website Update Tuesday 15 September 2015

The website was updated yesterday, Tuesday 15 September 2015.

This update focuses on information on the descendants of William Partington Pask from Lincolnshire (Chart 14), as detailed in the blog titled Descendants of William Partington Pask.

At the age of 11, William left Liverpool and signed up on a ship travelling to Australia, as a cabin boy. He settled, and married in Queensland, and had ten children. There is a lot of additional information — several photographs and numerous newspaper articles from the Townville Daily Bulletin.

28 new narratives have been added since the last update on 30 August 2015. There is now a total of 11,031 detailed narratives available on the website and 17,985 (28 new) people in our database.

Descendants of William Partington Pask

This information relates to Chart 14, the descendants of William Pask, (1791 - 1874) Caythorpe, Lincolnshire. 

William Partington Pask (1853-1839)

We were contacted by George & Jan Harlow née Pask, from Queensland Australia. They advised that Jan's grandfather was William Partington Pask who left Liverpool after an argument with his stepfather and stepmother in Liverpool at the Eagle Vault Hotel and signed on a ship travelling to Australia as a cabin boy. After many experiences he married and settled at the Kirk River, west of the coastal town of Townsville, North Queensland.  

William married Margaret Rosina Webster STEWART, and they had ten children. 

We have done some extensive research, particularly in the Trove Digitized Newspapers website, which has provided a wealth of information on this Townsville family. This information will be included in the next website update. 

George & Jan also provided us with ten photographs relating to the family, and their descendants. The photographs are priceless, and have been included in a Picasa Web Album. 

Sincere thanks for George & Jan contacting us and providing us with this very interesting insight into life in Australia in the early 20th century.

The website was updated yesterday, Sunday 30 August 2015.

108 new narratives have been added since the last update on 1 June 2015. There is now a total of 11,004 detailed narratives available on the website and 17,957 (214 new) people in our database.

This update includes additional information on families in Suffolk (Chart 6), Lincolnshire (Chart 11), and Monmouthshire (Chart 42).

Pask Family Memorials in Valleau Cemetery New Jersey

This information relates to the main Lincolnshire tree - descendants of Johannis [John] and Elizabeth Pask née Archer, who lived in Lincolnshire.

Recently 'Tucker' a volunteer with Find a Grave, kindly photographed a Pask Memorial at Valleau Cemetery, Ridgewood, Bergen County, New Jersey, USA.

The Pask Memorial Inscription shows:

Durant W. (1889-1957)
Johanna W. (1900-1989)
Marion M.      (1923-2011)
Lawrence H. (1925-2012)

Durant Watson Pask was the son of Charles Pask and Filomela Gabrielli who immigrated to America in 1888. Charles was born in 1856 in Fulbeck, Lincolnshire, and was the 9th great-grandson of John Pask, (c1520-1591), the main Lincolnshire progenitor, who lived in Washingborough.

Marion and Lawrence were Durant, and his wife Johanna's son, and daughter-in-law.

In addition, Tucker noted that on the reverse of the memorial, there was a Tevis Memorial.

The inscription shows:

Ruth J. 1930-1990
Donald 1923-2001 Beloved Grandfather

Ruth J. Tevis née Pask was the daughter of Durant, and Johanna.

This information enabled us to do further research. The findings will be included in the next website update.

William Henry Rossington

Chart 11: John Pask, (c1745-1793) who married Elizabeth Fountain and they lived in Gautby, Lincolnshire.  

Yesterday, we received an usual request from Christopher Woodcock. He is the Tower Captain, and Bell Ringer, from St. Oswald's church in Blankney, Lincolnshire.

He is searching for information on William Henry Rossington, the younger son of Henry & Hannah Rossington née Pask.  

Christopher writes:

I am in the process of researching William Henry Rossington who was a bell ringer at St Oswald’s Blankney and who was killed on 15^th April 1918 aged 21 in the Great War.

It is our intention to hold a service of remembrance at St Oswald’s Blankney (organised by the local Bell Ringers) to commemorate the centenary of the death of William Henry Rossington. We also intend to ring a half muffled peal lasting 3 hours on the bells at Blankney in memory of him and all being well to visit the Ploegstreet Memorial which he is commemorated on to lay a wreath on behalf of the Bell Ringers and to ring hand bells their. The date for all this is still to be decided and set but it will be around 15^th April 2018.

We hope to get as much background information and history on William Rossington so that we can tell his story. We would also like to try and find a photograph of him which could then be framed and put up in the bell tower at Blankney as a permanent memorial to him there.

We would also like to try and invite family relatives of William Henry Rossington to attend the Memorial service in 2018.

If anyone can help with more information on William, please do contact Christopher, or ourselves. It would be great to honour William in such a way.

Link between Chart 42 and Chart 01

This information relates to the descendants of William Pask (c1720- ) who lived in Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire.

This information relates to the main Lincolnshire tree - descendants of Johannis [John] and Elizabeth Pask née Archer, who lived in Lincolnshire.

Last week we had some exciting, and mind-blowing news. There is probably a link between Chart 42 Monmouthshire, and Chart 01 Lincolnshire.

We were investigating Stuart's DNA Family Finder (Autosomal) results, and realised that there was a match with someone who is a descendant of Caroline Amelia Paske, from Family Chart 42 of Monmouthshire. Whilst the relationship is distant - perhaps 8th or 10th cousin, it indicates that probably their common ancestor William Pask c1720 originated from Lincolnshire, and was not linked to the other Monmouthshire families.

We are currently including the descendants of Caroline Amelia into the Pask database. She married Robert Henry Silvester in 1871. Currently their four children are not included. We hope to have them, and their 60+ descendants included in the next website update.

In the meantime, we appeal to anyone in Family Chart 42 with a living PASK(E) male to persuade them to take a Y-DNA test. We have several matching test results in Family Chart 01, but no one has taken a Y-DNA test in Family Chart 42.

Alternatively, if any females in Family Chart 42 would like to take a Family Finder test, this would provide us with more indicators that there is a definite link between Family Chart 01, and Family Chart 42.

Herbert Pask (1882-1915)

A brief commemoration service took place at 11:00 am on Friday 19th June 2015 at Clare War Memorial, Suffolk. A wreath was laid on behalf of Clare Town Council to mark the 100th anniversary of each of the Clare men who died in World War 1.

The first to fall from Clare was Herbert Pask on 19th June 1915.

Phil Gryce, Clare Town Councillor, gave a brief summary of Herbert's life, as described below. Two students from Stour Valley Community School laid the wreath on the Town Council's behalf. A minute's silence was held. Deputy Chair of Clare Town Council, Alan Parsley, recited from the Lawrence Binyon poem:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The last line was repeated by those present. The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, Paul Lord, had a brief word of thanks to the fallen and the need to commemorate them.

Herbert Pask was the youngest of seven children. The Pasks came from Stoke by Clare and lived in Chilton from about 1891. Walter Pask was in charge of the cattle at Chilton Lodge Farm.  In 1901, Herbert was 18 and working as a hay binder in Black Notley. In 1911 he was living with his parents at Chilton Lodge Farm and was a horse keeper on a farm.

One of the streets in the new development off Stoke Road has been named after him.
